Hi, I went to the outer banks and we drove on the beach in our jeep. It was so cool! There are wild mustangs out there and they made for some cool pictures. Not sure on fishing,but we ate at a great BBQ restaurant that had red and white on the outside, not sure on the name its been a few years. Also, there is a drive thru beer store. Very random! Enjoy!

I am in the market for a road bike and I was wondering if the carbon fiber fork is going to make a huge difference. I am not sure I can really tell that big of a difference actually riding it. I am currently looking at the Trek 1.1 (no carbon fork) and the Giant Defy 3 which has a carbon fork. The Trek is about 599 at my LBS and the Giant is 779. Both are equipped with pretty equal shimano equipment. What do you think?
The problem with the Trek is that it’s not even worth upgrading. Putting an aluminum fork on a road bike in the year 2010 is just goofy. I like Trek, but this was a tacky maneuver to get a sub-$700 road bike on the market, given that the components are already about as low as you can go anyhow.
But, the $599 price sounds better than the $660 I saw listed otherwise.
Giant has a good name, and the frameset would certainly be worth upgrading as you grow as a rider. I thought these were supposed to list for $750, though.
If you have local dealers for Specialized, Jamis, and Kona, take a look at their offerings, too. The Allez can be found for under $700 at some shops, and it’s very much upgrade-worthy as is the Defy.

Depending on what species the boat is after on the day you went out, your combo might or might not work. If they are after smaller fish in relatively “shallow” waters, many bass/catfish combos will be sufficient. Currently, most boats were after bottom species. Bottom fishing is interesting. You could catch tiny little fish and very sizable fish with same bait and rig. Even though many of them aren’t fishing very deep waters, you will feel under powered with many freshwater and/or surf fishing combos. My advise is bring your combo with you and ask deckhands (not workers on the dock) if your equipment is sufficient. If you need heavier setups, rental rods and reels are always available. Don’t buy any rod and reel until after you’ve tried it. Bottom fishing on a cattle boat could be very different from fishing on the pier and you might or might not like it.
2. All i’ve caught on the pier… What will i be needing…
Since most boats are bottom fishing at the moment, you don’t need much to start. You only need hooks and sinkers in various sizes. The boat will provide the bait. Bring size 2, 2/0, and 4/0 hooks. Bring a few 4oz, 8oz and 12oz torpedo or cannon ball sinkers. If the boat is fishing waters deeper than 200ft and/or the water could be choppy, get at least one 1 pound rockfish sinker at the dock. You need heavy sinkers to bring your rig down fast and keep your line straight to avoid tangles. If you don’t wish to bring that many sinkers, don’t bring any lighter sinkers; sinkers that are heavier than required are always better especially on a charter boat. You could bring pre-tied rockfish rigs or high/low rigs if you wish. There is a limitation on the number of hooks allowed when fishing for rockfish so a sabiki rig can not be used. You can use rockcod/rockfish flies though. They are around $2 per pack at Wal-Mart.

There are a few sites containing information for charter boat fishing. Just type in rockfish fishing tips on any search engine will produce a huge list. Keep in mind many of those sites containing info for private boat fishing instead of cattle boat fishing. You got to luxury to use light tackles on private boats. If you are on a cattle boat, you want to avoid tangles.

I am a fairly experienced angler looking to fish some new waters in MA, or NH and am looking for any helpful suggestions.
This site has info on several lakes in Massachusetts that are so-called “hotspots” for bass. Lakes such as Johns Pond, Buffumville lake and others with direction how to get there and which areas to fish.

i think i saw a show on discovery once where they were exploring the amazon or some other river in an area known for a species of fish that actively jumps and can knock fishers over.
the boat was surrounded with nets to keep the fish out, much like some trampolines have nets to keep you on them.
besides elaborate preparation, if you happen to like that kind of fish, catch it, make sure it stays in the boat.
otherwise, block it if you can and keep your balance so you stay in the boat.

If it holds water, you can keep a turtle in it. Get the largest (in bottom area) one you can afford and have room for. Turtles grow. Have you considered a child’s wading pool?
Fishing: Understanding How to Choose the Right Fishing Line
It is often said that the fishing rod is the foundation of any game fishing expedition. Just how well a fisherman can catch game relies heavily on how well he can handle his fishing rod.
It is also said that the lure, or bait, is the spice, the zest of such game fishing adventures. Just how simple or difficult it is depends on the kind of lure that the fisherman chooses.
Despite the reputation of success attained by fishing rods and fishing lures, however, they will equally fall short if the fisherman neglects to learn and master one vital component of the game: the fishing line.
Two fundamental actions are involved when using a fishing line:
1. Lure-casting. A good fishing line is required to guarantee that the lure is cast in the correct manner. This means that the desired angle and the needed distance are satisfied. This is especially significant in game fishing where every move, every action is critical to the success of the catch.
2. Spinning. With this movement, it gets a little tricky, a bit delicate. Logically, the fisherman wants a fishing line that’s strong and resilient enough so that it won’t break while reeling in the caught fish. The fisherman would also want a fishing line that’s most resistant to abrasion to ensure a smooth spin.
Therefore, from the required actions above, we can come up with the following necessary qualities of an ideal fishing line:
▪ Strength. The fishing line should be strong and durable enough so as not to break when reeling in the game it was made to catch. You shouldn’t measure this by just taking a line and pulling and stressing it with your hands to gauge or estimate its strength.
Experienced fishermen know and understand that the dampness or the dryness of the fishing line will affect its strength. Fishing lines that absorb water, such as monofilament lines, are not recommended for rainy or damp days, even cold and wintry days. The more durable and resilient cofilament lines are more ideal for such conditions. They cost more but its well worth it.
▪ Abrasion resistance. The fishing line should be resistant against friction and abrasion caused by contact with rocks or boulders, tough vegetation and other terrestrial and deep water objects.
Some fishermen frequently have to cut their fishing line every half hour or so just to ensure a fresh line if and when they do manage to catch a fish. This seems so unnecessary and more than a little wasteful in time and fishing gear.
Fluorocarbon lines have extra density compared to most other fishing lines. This makes them very resistant to abrasion.
▪ Stretch. Depending on the fisherman’s skill level, the fishing line’s capacity to stretch will play a critical role. For fishermen who are just starting out, the line’s stretch will provide some allowance for mistakes and mishaps, especially when fighting the fish.
But for clumsy, klutzy fishermen, on the other hand, setting up the hook or clasp could be easily miscalculated with a line that provides a lot of stretch. You’ve just got to pay close attention every time.
There are obvious advantages and disadvantages to using a fishing line that can or cannot stretch. Just keep in mind that the least resistant a line is to stretch is the more sensitive it can be for detecting a possible catch.
To be a successful fisherman, you should start with getting the right fishing gear. Part of this gear is the all-important fishing line. You surely don’t want to be losing great catches just because your line keeps snapping off. Match your fishing line to your game and location and you’ve got it good. Good luck!

Spend in a durable tackle box, in which you can store your entire lure, keeping it easily to get to. Styles are classified into simple and inexpensive, and large and costly. Fishermen may only need something small, but the more advanced fishermen may want something handier. Furthermore, you should consider a fly box. It depends on how much stuff you need or want and the quality of equipment you want. Me and my dad have thousands of dollars worth of equipment and that doesn’t even count the boat and motors. However if you just want to go fishing and catch a few you can get the equipment needed for fairly cheap.
1 I would start with an Ugly Stik spinning rod, they typically run about 30 bucks, and a spinning reel you feel comfortable with. The best thing to do is go to your local sporting goods store and play with the demo models until you find something you are comfortable with. Most of these stores will also string the reel for you for a few dollars, but if they don’t I’d recommend buying monofiliment line it is inexpensive and easy to use in fact most of what i use is monofiliment. You’ll also need a variety of smaller supplies including hooks, sinkers (split shots are your best bet), a depth finder, maybe lures and probably a bobber (slip bobbers are my preference) or two and of course some bait. I’d also recommend a small tackle box to get started since it comes in handy. Depending on the size of the fish a net and needle-nose pliers are both possible needs. I always have both a needle nose and a set of nail clippers in the boat.

4. The best time to fish depends on the time of year and the fish you are after. Usually just before sunrise and just after sunset are the best times, but panfish and bass feed all day in the spring and early summer in shallow water.

Wow it seems your lucks in, lol. I know the feeling when you’ve got cash or a gift card to spend but don’t really know what to spend it on since you’ve got loads already. So my advice would be take your time choosing as I’ve been there and bought somethings i was never going to use. My advice to you would be clothing, how about a nice light weight waterproof jacket such as those made by loop, or guide. they are expensive but will really keep you dry and they look good too.
Or how about a gps, or a humin bird fish finder.
