Guide To Becoming A Heavy Equipment Operator

Most people think that the work of a heavy equipment operator is limited to operating a heavy tipping truck or a bulldozer. This is not true. There are many other heavy machinery and equipment that a heavy equipment operator requires to be proficient in operating. In addition, the job is not gender specific, and this field offers employment both to men and women. If you are able to operate large and heavy machinery, are prepared to work in a team, have adequate communication skills, and are ready to accept suggestions for improvement, you can certainly be successful in pursuing a career as a heavy equipment operator.

The job of a heavy equipment operator does not fall under any designated profession or trade. A heavy equipment operator is required to operate, maintain and adjust huge and heavy machinery used mostly in the construction industry and also in several other industries like mining, fishing, logging etc. Operators also find work at freight jobs, travel, and refuse collection routes. Most heavy equipment operators get trained on the job.

A number of schools have come up in different parts of the country to cater to the educational needs for a career as a heavy equipment operator. These courses include basics of analytical and diagnostic techniques along with instructions for in-depth understanding of the principles of electronics. To cater to the demanding nature of the job, such courses also have a strong practical and hands-on training profile.

There are several sub-categories in the job of a heavy equipment operator, such as mechanics, repairers, collision repair technicians etc. Some of these require a certification, which is renewable every five years.

Apart from the educational requirements the most essential criterion of eligibility is possession of a CDL or commercial driver’s license. If you possess any experience in driving some type of construction machinery, trucks and tractors etc. it is an added advantage for employment. Other desirable attributes for employment include the ability to judge distances, work in a team, to be open to new ideas and suggestions for improvement, be ready for additional training and responsibility. Jobs as an apprentice are available for candidates having completed formal training programs in heavy equipment operations. However, salary for apprentices at best remains nominal for entry-level positions.

Heavy equipment operators are required to operate, maintain and adjust machines like excavators, bull dozers, loaders, shovels, heavy duty tippers, forklift trucks, graders, drilling machines, cranes, motor graders, asphalt pavers, vibratory road rollers, compactors, skid steer loaders, pipe layers, compactors, pile drivers etc. On junior operator levels the work consists of operating small equipment like small rubber tire loaders and monitoring equipment. Later on with greater experience moving on to heavier machines is possible. With ongoing training and promotions, it is possible to reach senior positions like foreman, trainer, safety officer, or superintendent.

The job prospects are quite good for heavy equipment operators. Nearly all towns and cities have manufacturing facilities and construction sites where heavy equipment operators need exist, so it is easy to relocate to a fresh location without much worry about finding a new job.

Does anyone know some web sites that can show me how to make my own custom fishing rod building equipment?

I would like to get in touch with someone who builds and repairs fishing rods. The equipment is so overpriced and appears to be something I could easily make myself with a little help from a pro or knowledgable hobbyist. My old glass Fenwick 9′ Steelhead Rod is in the shop getting the eyes rewound and I don’t like leaving my favorite rod with someone I don’t know.

look at a rod building forum for information. For simple guide repairs it’s not much work, but building you own rod is more involved. Building you own is not going to be a hugh money saver, but it is a great hobby that will give you a lot of satisfaction in your finished product as you use it.

Popular Walleye Fishing Rods Reviewed

One of the most vital pieces of fishing equipment you will ever own is your rod. Choosing one is a matter of personal preference. When it comes to walleye fishing, look for a rod that is fast acting. In terms of size, the rod should fall between six feet and six _ feet in length. The base should range somewhere between 3/8″ and 5/16″.

Locating a food source, taking a bite and then snatching it up takes all of about _ of a second for a walleye. This requires nothing short of a fast action rod to snap up the fish before your bait disappears. To ensure you are purchasing an effective fast action rod, snap it from side to side in the store. The rod should remain stiff with no detectable bending movement present. This stiffness leads to more sensitivity that will allow you to better navigate your line. This will have you seeking out Walleye in virtually every hiding spot along the water.

Let us look at some of the more popular walleye fishing rods to see what they have to offer.

Shimano Compre Spinning Rods

The Shimano Compre Spinning Rod series comes to life from IM-8 graphite material. The numbers fall within the ideal ranges in terms of a walleye fishing rod. In length, the rods are 6 feet, 6 inches long and maintain a line weight between 10 to 20 pounds. Lure weight comes in the range of _ ounce to 1 ounce. With an action ranking of very fast, this series of rods start at a price of $79.99. Breaking the impression of being a reel company, Shimano went the extra distance to prove critics wrong. These rods contain composite cork butt caps, gold inserts and a dark cherry finish.

Pros: Right off the bat, two of the best features for this rod series is the warranty and the price. Shimano provides anglers who purchase from this rod series an over the counter limited lifetime warranty policy. If at any time something should go wrong or the rod stops functioning all together, an angler simply visits the nearest fishing retailer carrying Shimano products to receive an immediate replacement rod. There are no gimmicks involved. No questions asked. The angler is back on the water in no time.

Where price is concerned, the $79.99 retail price for this rod series virtually cannot be beat. Another key feature of the series is the exposed blank setting. This allows an angler to reach deep lengths of structures without the hassle of hitting other structures along the way. The rod itself is fast acting which provides for quick, focused long distance casting and accurate navigation between structures.

Cons: Sensitivity in the rod related to a typical IM-8 rod. Although the Fuji reel seat offers up an aerodynamic effect and presents a perfect fit on the rod, the sensitivity provided by this layout falls just shy of other rods in the same market. Many other walleye fishing rods in the specialty rods division market provide higher levels of sensitivity in feeling line movement. Walleye fish strike a line fast and furious leaving little or no time for reaction by the angler. Therefore, the slight lack of sensitivity in this rod hinders it from being the best walleye rod on the market.

Lamiglas G1000 Graphite Spinning Rods

The Lamiglas G1000 Graphite Spinning rod series utilizes graphite material to create a lightweight, durable yet effective walleye fishing rod. In size, this series comes in at 7 feet 6 inches long with a line weight capacity of 10 to 30 pounds. Lure weight handling is anywhere from one to 8 ounces. There are a minimum of seven guides plus the tip in this rod series. In addition, the action rating is moderate fast and prices start at $210.00 retail.

Pros: The most attractive benefit to this rod series is the multi talented aspects presented in use. The stiff tip application allows for extra strength when casting into heavy currents or reeling in a large size walleye. There is tremendous capacity for casting heavy weights and lures for long distances. The extended cork handle provides the right setting to maintain control when reeling in even the biggest walleye. Another key benefit is the strength accounted for in the blank. This allows for quick loads and equally quicker retrievals. The blank feature of this rod series can handle quite a bit of weight load and still be effective in the process.

Cons: The only drawback to this walleye rod series is the lack of a Fuji reel seat. This lighter weight option allows for more ease in use. The overall design of a Fuji reel seat allows for comfortable gripping and increased stability when casting and retrieving a line. After a long day of fishing, this is a welcomed helping hand for weary anglers.

Turning Camping Into Cash – Pt. 1

Turning Camping into Cash?
Pt. 1

“Camping is nature’s way of promoting the motel business.” – Dave Berry.

Having returned from my first camping trip, while casually thumbing through the Yellow Pages for quick divorce lawyers, I received a call from Top Sleeping Bags, a new camping equipment website, asking “can you write an article on turning camping into cash?” I closed the phone book and here’s the first installment of my series of answers.

The camping world needs a woman’s touch and I don’t mean a female Daniel Boone. I mean a female Dave Berry. It really needs one and there’s gold in them ‘thar hills. There’s no advice for dreamers (who looked at brochure photos of laughing couples, holding hands while hiking along majestic mountain paths) only to return from their first camping trip with blisters the size of baseballs, poison ivy welts and the need for blood tests for Lyme Disease. And that’s where turning camping into cash and you come in. Just think about it, if you like to hike, canoe and camp anyway, it’s all upside. That advice giver could be you.

Camping gear reviews — advice on what camping gear to buy and why — is everywhere, from eBay’s Camping Buying Guide or REI’s Camp/Hike Expert Advice. In bone-numbing detail, we learn we’ll need out sleeping bags rated for -10* Fahrenheit to camp in the snow or that a car rack must clamp to the seam between the door and vehicle frame if a car lacks gutters. And, coincidentally, every tip and every piece of advice relates back to a product for sale on the site.

And the Internet also abounds with campsite reviews where information that should cause civilized people to recoil in horror is considered mighty handy information for the hardy camping crowd. These reviews allow them to discover which campsites have 30 amp electricity, which have sewage disposal for RVs, and those where you best keep an eye out for rattlesnakes and scorpions.

But real-world advice? Forget it. You can search the Internet in vain or Google until the cows come home but you won’t find advice on whether it is better to choke to death on fish bones or simply walk into the wilderness and freeze to death after your newly retired husband – who somehow convinced you to share a winter adventure ice fishing in Canada – hands you his fresh catch to clean and cook for the evening’s meal over a tiny propane flame. Nor can you find advice on the best response when — while pitching a tent in the dark with someone who forgot to pack flashlights — asked what’s taking so long to pound in your half of the tent stakes into the ground with the heel of your shoe because someone also forgot to pack a hammer.

You’ll search forever for camping advice that begins with “Just don’t do it, don’t go. But if you must be certain you know how far the nearest 4-Star restaurant is from your campsite and you’ve MapQuested the directions… “

So where to start, in turning good advice like that into gold? My advice – start a camping blog? Start a camping blog, gain a following with your advice and make money from affiliate marketing or selling advertising space. Starting a blog – personal publishing platforms — can be done without money. See WordPress.

Affiliate Marketing. Sign up with an affiliate marketing company like commissionjunction.com or clickbank.com, chose the product you want to sell on your website (divorce lawyer advertising? Family counseling?), the company will provide you with the code to place on your blog and then every time some one clicks on the link or buys the product, (pay per click or pay per commission) you get paid!

Sell Advertising Space. For example, you can go to Google’s site, sign up for an Ad Sense account, and follow the instructions they provide to get it on your blog. You know those “ads by Google” sections of web pages these days, that’s what we’re talking about.

Sell Banner Ads. Offer spots for companies to place banner ads on your site. To keep it easy, you can place the banner ad code in one of your blog posts. If you want to get more technical, you can attempt to place it on other locations on your blog page.

Or …

Squidoo. This is a spot for people to make small personal web pages about things they are interested in. You could, rather easily, make several Squidoo lenses (their dubbed term for webpage) with various articles, photos, video, etc. The beauty of a Squidoo lense, is the money making technology is built in. You can, with a click of a button, add an Adsense campaign to your lenses, Amazon modules, or ebay listings. All of which you split a commission on.

HubPages. These are a similar concept to Squidoo. You make your own personal “hubpage” and use the same methods to produce an small income, AdSense, Amazon, etc. If your Hubpage has valuable content, which as we established before shouldn’t be that hard in the field of camping, its very possible to great a small but steady source of income.

This isn’t get-rich-quick advice but it is a way you could gain a national following, your traffic could explode and then the world would be your oyster. Don’t quit your day job. But do take your laptop with you camping. I believe in you. You should believe in you.

You may think the hardest part is coming up with great advice. Think again. Just go camping. Be sure and check back, Top Sleeping Bags has me booked for a whole series.

Hunting Fishing to Get Healthy

The great outdoors offers a huge number of opportunities for getting out there and reclaiming your one-on-one enjoyment with nature though activities such as hunting fishing and hiking or camping.

If it’s been a while since you’ve indulged in any sort of strenuous outdoor activity, then consider getting a full physical first and tell your doctor that you’re wanting to pursue activities such as hunting fishing or hiking. This will ensure that you are physically able to enjoy these activities as well as catching any potential health problems that could be aggravated by a sudden increase in physical activity. If you get the green light from your doctor, get your fishing hunting gear together and get ready to enjoy the great outdoors.

Along with getting your physical health checked, you need to make sure to remember the safety basics for hunting fishing outdoor recreational activities. First of all, if you’re going to indulge in any of these pastimes, tell at least one other person where you are going and leave a map of the route you plan to take to your favorite fishing hole, place to hunt whitetail deer or hiking trail. It’s important because if you encounter a difficult situation and you are unable to call for help, then others will know the routes to take to find you.

For your hunting expedition, make sure that you are well-versed in the basics of gun safety. As well, it’s imperative to wear an orange reflective vest during deer hunting season so that you will not be mistaken for big game. Using a turkey call is a good way to let other hunters know you’re in the area too. Because the deer herd actually considers the call of a turkey to be calming, this won’t give away your location or cause the deer to run. Just remember that when engaging in hunting, being visible to other hunters will avoid a tragic accident.

Reconnecting with your family is a great aspect of enjoying outdoor recreational activities. Whether it’s hunting fishing or taking the family for a hike through a “not often traveled” trail, it’s great to get away from the stresses of life and enjoy the simple pleasures that don’t involve cell phones, laptop computers or text messages, at least for a weekend.

how to convince people that fishing /hunting is not a sport?

i think you can fish or hunt if you are hungry and will take only what you need for yourself and family. Why are there still thousands of people that will go out fishing just for the fun of it when most of them are already overfed (overweight). The oceans have to be protected from “fun fishing”.

The fact that you asked this question proves that you have never done either one well. Any idiot can go out in the woods/out in a boat and sit and say they went Hunting/fishing, that doesn’t mean they are a hunter/fisherman.

Both are sports.

More money is raised for protection of the land and water resources by sportsmen than all other means. What the Oceans need to be protected from are not the sport fishermen, but the commercial fishing fleets that just want to harvest as much as possible without any thought to how it effects the eco-system.

Having Fun On Ice: A Guide To Ice Fishing Equipment

Several countries,in the frozen north, practice a style of angling that is quite a bit different than any other form of recreational fishing. Ice fishing is a slow, sometimes dangerous sport that requires the angler to have patience and the right equipment

Ice fishing started in frozen countries such as Canada and Norway, but is not limited to these locations. In fact some lakes in Alaska freeze thick enough to fish on. Like the name states, this form of angling can only occur on frozen lakes thick enough to sustain a lot of weight.

Traditionally, ice fishing equipment amounts to nothing more than a sturdy wooden pole, a long, strong piece of fishing line, hooked and baited, and a stool to sit upon for several hours. Also, some prefer to hunt with a sharpened wooden spear. Although his method is not as widely used or appreciated, the spear is another possible piece of ice fishing equipment.

But, there is more to ice fishing than sitting and waiting. The fisherman also needs to be able to cut a sufficient hole through the frozen lake to get to the water underneath. That’s where ice spades or ice saws, two specialized articles of ice fishing equipment, comes in. The fisherman uses these tools to cut a hole about five inches in diameter out of the frozen lake. A strainer is another piece of ice fishing equipment used to sift out newly forming chunks of ice within the hole.

There are a few different kinds of angling techniques that can be applied to ice fishing. The first uses small, fast lures and a keen eye, to catch smaller game. The second method requires a special piece of ice fishing equipment known as a ‘tie-up’. Using this method, the angler drags the multi hooked fishing line by hand until it strikes, thus, “tying” the fish in a web of hooks. The last method is the spear method, in which the fisherman places decoy fish at the top of the water in the cut hole, then waits until the perfect moment to strike.

As I stated above, ice fishing can be a dangerous sport. Water must be frozen to about four inches thick in order to support the average humans’ weight. Some times the ice is a bit thinner than four inches. Mistakes like misjudging the strength of the ice can be a potentially life threatening error. If one were to fall into a partially frozen lake, he or she would most likely die from hypothermia, if not properly taken care of.

So in conclusion, if you have sufficient knowledge and the right ice fishing equipment, ice angling can be a fun and fulfilling sport that people of all ages can enjoy.

What is the most beautiful fresh water fish you have ever seen?

Size and temperament don’t matter I have all sizes of aquariums and water processing equipment to provide the proper environment.

Pteronotropis welaka, The bluenose shiner. You have to watch the video until the bigger fish (warpaints, etc.) get out of their way to see them look more natural. Not the best video to show what they really look like.

second place: Etheostoma osburni, candy darter

No matter your equipment or expertise, these are now protected, in an effort to keep these species from joining the 21 native American freshwater fish species that have already become extinct.

Salmon Fishing Tackle – The Hidden Tact Of Handling Them

The not so experienced anglers find the issues with reference to the bait, lures, tackle which is available and overwhelming confusion as the most difficult part of fishing as a sport. If u spot any Fishing Magazine or browse through the net or when you go to a fishing and sport exhibition you would be surprised at the count of Sure fire and must have salmon fishing tackle things which are for sale.

In real there are no particular items which would bring in success in salmon fishing. Tackling is a very necessary aspect and making proper selections would help your chances of getting one. Following are the items which should be taken in every salmon tackle box, doesn’t matter in which part of the world your fishing.

Lures and Spinners – they have a decent variety of spinners, wiggle baits, spoons and plugs. Rattle baits are designed to make noise only when it is pulled through the water. It is very good muddy water fishing. Generally brighter colors like the yellows, reds, gold, blues, oranges, greens, and silvers are the finest for fishing in clear water during bright conditions and dark colors like the browns, dark greens and blues, and grays are the best during cloudy climatic conditions and fishing in early morning or evening.

Live bait – in few waterways prawns, shrimp and even worms make very good additions to the hooks but sometimes they are prohibited in quite a lot of areas there fore care should be taken to make sure that there are no legal violations in using this kind of bait.

Flies – Salmon fishing tackle will not be entirely complete without few good fly rod and salmon flies. The design for a salmon fly is basic and it would be the same as a trout fly but the difference is that the hook would be a bit big and a more sturdy design.

Fly rod – This type of fishing is a form of true art with the movement and casting of the fly and rod happening almost in an endless effort. A fly rod that is included in the tackle collection must be around 10 to 12 feet long and must be able to bring at least 12 to 15 pound of salmon. Rods with double grip are versatile as they could be cast with the hand to prevent any problems of vegetation or overhanging trees in shore fishing.

Bait and Spinning Rods – at least a bait rod is necessary for a salmon tackle box. It is very necessary to make sure that the rod is made for salmon which has a very strong handle and a butt section for allowing a person to hold comfortably while the fish fights. Usually a bait rod is heavier and shorter when compared to a fly rod. It averages to about 9- 10 feet in length.

A major tip with regard to making salmon fishing tackle is that you should be sure enough to get robust and heavy equipment as salmons are heavier than other fish and they are active and fight harder when compared to other species, demolishing light weight kinds of tackle.

Does anyone know any roe cures for salmon fishing that doesn’t include borax?

Does anyone know any roe cures for salmon fishing that doesn’t include borax and coho salmon will go crazy over it?
Thanks
Hi
Does anyone have a salmon roe cure that doesn’t include borax? I don’t want borax because it’s poisonous and if a human eats 5 grams, he’ll die. I’m using the roe for coho salmon

Thanks

Why? Borax is the best.

Not soap, just pure borax.

Hmmm… I wonder what the main ingredient of shake and cure is…
Betcha it’s borax…

EDIT:
From Wikipedia:
Borax, sodium tetraborate decahydrate, is not acutely toxic. [9] Its LD50 (median lethal dose) score is tested at 2.66 g/kg in rats. [10] This does not mean that it is safe, merely that a significant dose of the chemical is needed to cause severe symptoms or death. The median lethal dose for humans tends to differ for a given compound from that of rats. Simple exposure can cause respiratory and skin irritation. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal distress including nausea, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Effects on the vascular system and brain include headaches and lethargy, but are less frequent. “In severe poisonings, a beefy red skin rash affecting palms, soles, buttocks and scrotum has been described. With severe poisoning, erythematous and exfoliative rash, unconsciousness, respiratory depression, and renal failure.” [11]

A reassessment of boric acid/borax by the United States Environmental Protection Agency Office of Pesticide Programs found potential developmental toxicity (especially effects on the testes).[12] Boric acid solutions used as an eye wash or on abraded skin are known to be especially toxic to infants, especially after repeated use because of its slow elimination rate.

Food additive
Borax, given the E number E285, is used as a food additive in some countries but is banned in the United States. In consequence certain foods, such as caviar, produced for sale in the U.S. contain higher levels of salt to assist preservation.[5] Its use in cooking is to add a firm rubbery texture to the food, or as a preservative. In oriental cooking it is mostly used for its texturing properties. In China it was found to have been added to hand-pulled noodles (lamian) and some Cheung Fun recipes.[citation needed] In Indonesia it is a common, but forbidden, additive to such foods as noodles, meatballs and steamed rice. The country’s Directorate of Consumer Protection warns of the risk of liver cancer with high consumption over a period of 5–10 years.[6]

(not from wikipedia):
The borax on your bait will be washed off in the water and any ingested by the fish will be removed when the fish is cleaned.
If it killed fish wouldn’t it be illegal to use?
It is not illegal.

Deep Sea Fishing Charters – Economical Group Fishing Excursions

If you are one for deep sea fishing, the best way you can make the most of the sport is to charter a boat for a deep sea fishing trip. Deep sea fishing charters are great fun when you go in a group. There are many advantages for group charters and the economics is just one of them. When on a deep sea charter with a lot of fellow anglers you will find that you will have a lot more fun, and even catch more fish.

Many deep sea fishing charter companies allow you to choose between renting a boat and making it out to sea by yourself or you may charter a bat and go on a guided tour for a couple of days out at sea. Chartered tours for deep sea fishing vary in length and the kind of events they sail into. Deep sea fishing charters are contracted by different people for many reasons, though mostly for fishing, some people like to take them out for whale watching too. Many people just go out to sea for some good diving and swimming. If you have the luck of the devil, as I have had on a couple of occasions, you will be able to do all these on one trip.

Many people cannot wait to get out to sea in their deep sea charter. There are many charter boats designed for specific fishing, so if you are angling to catch a shark make sure you have the right boat, and probably the right guide, preferably one who can dive in and pull you out of the drink in time. Yea, there are precautions you should take for your deep sea fishing trip. Deep sea charter fishing is nothing like fishing at the lake of river. Here the fish are invariably bigger than you and can pull you into their domain if you are not cautious enough. So get the macho image off and get your seat belt on while you hold the hook and sinker r in the sea. Many accidents have happened, with anglers joining the Piscean species in the sea because they throw caution to the wind.

If you are out on a deep sea charter from a reputed company, you will no doubt have access to the best advice at sea. Many deep sea charter boat companies subscribe to news feeds that keep them up to date on where the best game is and how fast to get there. So while you are at a location at sea and having little or no luck, a news flash on the radio will inform the captain where to go and what kind of fish to expect.

If you are hunting shark you will best get out to sea at night. Because of the calmness of the sea at night many anglers have much better luck than when they fish in the daytime. However, many anglers cannot stand the eeriness of the sea at night and prefer to try their luck when the sun comes out.

The prices will vary of course. So, try to do a bit of research and get the best deep sea fishing charter for your trip. If you join a group, it will work out more economical and fun.

How to Care For Your Fishing Tackle – A Guide for the Expert or Novice Fisherman!

The angler’s relationship with his equipment is a sacred one. Fishing tackle provides us with many hours of great fishing experience. In return, if we can spare but a few minutes to take care of it, we will be avoiding expensive trips to fishing shops for repairing and replacing equipment.

Maintaining fishing tackle is not a difficult task. It can easily be carried out by the most inexperienced of fishermen with materials that are easily available. What is usually lacking is the knowledge. This article aims to provide the novice fisherman with instructions and tips on how to care for his or her fishing tackle.

Fishing Reel

Fishing reel is one of the most delicate parts of fishing tackle because it is composed of moving parts. Regular maintenance and lubrication of fishing reels will greatly extend the lifespan of your fishing reel and ensure that it provides you with many hours of enjoyable fishing.

Always use freshwater to rinse out your reels, especially if you’ve been saltwater fishing. Dry the reel gently with a soft towel and use WD-40 or other similar sprays for lubrication, and to retard the effects of corrosion. Do not forget to put a drop or two of oil on your level wind gear.

Once in a while the reel should be carefully examined for nicks and cuts. Clear nail polish should be used to fill in any scratches on the reel. This is also a good moment to tighten the screws on your reel. This could make the crucial difference between your successfully landing a large catch, or your reel disintegrating under the strain.

If you are storing your fishing tackle for prolonged periods, it is also a good idea to loosen the drag on reel. This will prolong the life of the metal crush washers on the drag stack.

Fishing rods

Although fishing rods are probably the sturdiest part of fishing tackle, many rods have been broken by getting caught in doors, getting banged about in boats, or due to improper storage. Always take special care to ensure that your rod does not get involved in such unfortunate accidents.

Rods can also be periodically rinsed with freshwater to prolong their life. Do ensure that you dry them properly afterwards. The guides are the most delicate parts of fishing rods. These must be checked for snags by running a cotton tipped swab through and through. Always inspect the guides after saltwater fishing for signs of corrosion.

Fishing line

A fishing line is one of the most important parts of fishing tackle as your ability reel in fish depends on the strength and sensitivity of the line. When fighting a fish, the line tends to rub against rocks, logs, other fish, or hard objects. The consequent abrasions weaken the line. Hence it is very important to check for nicks and abrasions that weaken the line. If you find that a portion of the line is frayed, then it is a good idea to cut it off, rather than to have the line part when you are reeling in a good catch.

Monofilament line can also be damaged by prolonged exposure to excess sunlight or heat. Keep your fishing tackle in a cool, dry, shaded area when not in use. Avoid keeping fishing tackle in hot car trunks or in the back seat of the car where they are exposed to direct sunlight. Bulk line should also be stored in a cool and dark place.

Balance

A good fishing tackle should be well balanced. Always ensure that the rod, reel, line, and lure are compatible with each other. Do not use a light outfit with a heavy line or a heavy lure with a light outfit. Improperly balanced fishing tackle will not only be more susceptible to breakages and damages, but will also degrade your fishing performance.

Do i need a business license for a little fishing shop?

Well, not very much a shop as your thinking of a building.
But, lets say, this. I have 23 feet of minows family right in a row in my town where i only know where it is. Expect the boaters. (It’s in the woods). I catch minnows, but i always have like 100 minnows for spare. Instead of throwing em back, can i sell each minnow for 10 cents each right at the park? I’m 12 years old. I didn’t think so, because my nice friend i go fishing with said i didn’t need one (28 yrs.) Always, would i need one. If i do, where can i get one?
Why did i write 12 years old, 13**

Well for starters, your probably not going to be eligible to get a license. Next, you would have to check to see if it is legal or not for you to sell any fish that came from the natural water. In some states it’s illegal to sell any fish from public water, thus you might have to come up with a source from which you get your minnows.

Now as your still a minor and may not be held responsible for your actions, you could probably get away with it, with a roadside stand. You may be in violation making sales on a public park. If I were you I would go for it, but then again, I’m always rooting for the outlaws.

Setting Up a Salt Water Fish Tank

Salt water fish tanks are not only a desirable decorative element in the home, but they also house something that is buzzing with life and activity. Setting up a salt water fish tank is by no means easy, and the fish themselves are a bit pricy, but the amazing results are completely unique and gorgeous. Novices may want to start small with a beginner salt water fish tank, though, before installing a complex aquarium with many breeds of exotic fish.

Maintaining salt water fish tanks is vastly different from taking care of that goldfish in a bowl that many of us had as children. The maintenance goes far beyond daily feeding, to say the least. Setting up a salt water fish tank requires checking water temperatures and nitrate levels using a test kit, for starters. Someone also has to clean the tank every week, and the water quality should be tested on a regular basis.

The cost of purchasing, equipping and maintaining salt water fish tanks is more than that of any fresh water aquarium, which should definitely be noted. This should not discourage anyone who truly wants to enjoy the beauty and variety of tropical fish, though. Starting with a beginner salt water fish tank that is small and houses a limited number of fish is a good place to start. Then over time you can upgrade to a larger and richer aquarium.

With proper ongoing research, salt water fish tanks will give you and your visitors many hours of pleasure and provide you with an interesting hobby.

new salt water tank?

i am fixing to start a salt water aquarium in a 30 gallon but want to ask a few questions. i will be buying the sand, two power heads, protiem skimmer, hydrometer, salt mix, and chemicals to dechorinate the water. i already have filter, tank of course, and heater. do i have all the proper equipment????

Also i just want a FO (fish only) to start with but wanted to know which fish would be better to starty wit. Damsels, clownfish, or trigger fish. And how many? thanks alot

Sounds like you have researched it well and will have the right equipment.
You should avoid damsel fish, they are cheap and hardy fish, but they are very territorial and may bully and harass other fish.
Trigger fish require a much larger tank, they are gorgeous fish but it would be best to leave them until you maybe decide to upgrade your tank for a bigger one, and chances are you will, once your hooked on marines you will want to go bigger and better!
Clown fish are good starter fish very hardy and easy to keep, but they can be territorial, so it would be better not to introduce a clown first.
You could also choose from, chromis, gobies, blennies, all easy and hardy fish, lots of different types to choose from.
Just remember to introduce the fish very slowly, you don’t want to overload your system by adding too many too soon.
The shop where you will buy your fish should be able to give you lots of information on compatibility and stocking levels.

Does anyone need help with fishing ?

Copyright (c) 2010 Richard Marsteller

Is there anyone that needs help with fishing I can help? Fishing is a good sport, you can relax and take your mind off the problems you have in the world. You can go out and have some fun. You need some line, a pole and some bait.

There are artificial baits you can use, but I like real worms. Worms are the oldest bait known to man and the fish love them. There are plastic worms that work well. You have to try and see how you do. There are silver spoons that work well. I have used one and caught a nice size bass. Artificial baits are easy to use and you can use them over and over again. They look and work like live bait. There are so many artificial baits out there, spinner baits, worms, spoons, top water baits, crank baits, etc.

But you have to know where the fish are. If you cast your bait you don’t know if there are fish there. Try it again in different spots and if you don’t get a bite move on to another site and try again. That is what the Bass Masters do. You should keep notes on where you fish like water temp, cover, etc.

I like to watch fishing tournaments on television I get tips. There is some equipment you will need, a good rod and reel. I like the ugly stick it is strong and has a good feel. You can feel a nibble on your line. I use a spinning rod for both spinning reels and bait casting reels. Spinning reels need a rod with big eyes so the line will not get stuck when you cast. I like a two piece rod, it is easy to pack. There is nothing more frustrating than a birds nest, that is when the line gets so tangled up on your reel and you can’t untangle it. The only things you can do are cut the line off and reattach new line. There are many fishing lines out there. I find the new hybrid line the best. It is braided and does not have a set, it stays flexible. It is strong and holds knots well.

You will need a bait box to carry your lures to the place where you will fish. It depends on how many lures you want to try. Fish may like one bait at one time and not like another one, you have to try different ones.

How do you replace fishing line on an Abumatic model 120 or model 170 fishing reel?

I have no paperwork for either model that instructs you how to change the fishing line. I’ve seen schematics for the model 170 but no instructions for either model. These are the ’60-’70′s vintage reels. Thank you.

Have you try to take the top off because there should be a area in there where line suppose to go but if you have any problem you should just go to a local bait and tackle shop and im pretty sure they would help you or they would even ask if you want line on them and they would gladly put fishing line on your reel for a cheaper price then if you bought a whole 300 YRD line at the store.

Before you Buy Fish

I am writing this article to tell you something about aquariums in general. However, not about those big aquariums which can be found in Zoo’s or museums, but about home fish tanks. Of course, if you have a castle, or really big house, your home aquarium can be as big as those public ones. On the other hand not everybody is Bill Gates, or Queen of the United Kingdom. For us, ordinary people, smaller versions are produced.

But from another point of view, small doesn’t immediately mean it’s small too much; It’s relative. Even in a small flat or house you can have aquarium with capacity of few hundred litres. Basically, you can have only 10 litres aquarium as well. Bear in mind that introducing any fish into such small tank would be crime. Small sized aquariums are more suitable for plants only.

Previous idea leads me to the first point: tanks division based upon living beings. You can have, as I just wrote, a plant of a fish tank. And you can have an aquarium, which contains fish and plants living together in peace and harmony. Especially the harmony aspect is very important. Some fish prefer green food, and we can say that healthy looking aquarium plants are irresistible for them, but some fish need plants for hiding purposes as well. If such species don’t have enough hiding places, they feel stressed and they can even die. On the other hand we know species which don’t require plants necessarily, but they love to lay on their leafs and they also appreciate smooth touches how leafs slide through their bodies when swimming around.

Now, when you know that there is a direct relation between fish and plants, you should know something about various fish species compatibility. Let’s take a quick look into the natural food chain; It’s not the rule every time, but almost every time that larger fish eat smaller ones. Naturally, there exist exceptions where some little aggressive fish can eat the a big one as well. Piranhas, Puffer species, etc., etc. And this is how it goes in home aquariums too. An aquarium with many peaceful fish is called community aquarium. An aquarium where you keep aggressive fish and small peaceful fish together can be called a dinner time. And the last type is characterised by many aggressive fish kept in one little tank; This is called “fight to the dead” or “fight until the end”. Generally, I recommend community tanks instead of second and third case.

Previous paragraph shows you that it’s important to know everything about fish you want to own. Focus on temperament primarily. If you are beginner, there are some species, you should start with. These species are not demanding, and they don’t require much care. I am talking about Guppies, Platies, Mollies, Swordtails, Neon tetras, etc. These species are very peaceful and harmless, sometimes shy. Bear in mind that they should be kept in shoals, what means you shouldn’t keep 1 or 2 of them in one tank, otherwise they will not feel happy. Plecos and many catfish species belong to this “not demanding” group. Unlike fish which do best in shoals, they don’t need to be kept with too many specimens of their family or genus. Plecos require driftwood which becomes their most favourite place as time goes by. They suck it all day long. Another good fish for beginners is betta fish. Especially males are beautiful. They exist in many colour variants and their big fins look like jewels in the tank. They don’t harass other species, but if you put two males into one aquarium, they will kill each other. Nobody knows why. Once scientist put two males into very big garden pond, but they found each other and started to fight immediately. So how they could survive the evolution? In Thailand where they live in lakes, there is an alpha male which is the boss and nobody is fighting when he’s in.

If you aren’t a beginner any more, you can try for example Gouramies – bit aggressive, territorial and they eat everything small, what is or isn’t moving sometimes. Another nice species is the Angelfish. But they grow to big sizes, so they need a big tank. This category includes also Cichlids which come from America, Africa, and many species originating in Asia.

But if you don’t mind to spend a lot of time and and if you have enough experiences, you can choose a demanding fish, like the Discus fish – it needs special water conditions, or puffer fish. Fish from this group need special water, special feeding, or they breed unusually. Or they even need large aquarium, like Oscar fish, freshwater Sharks, or Koi carps. Sometimes it is better to keep them in garden ponds and not in the tank in the room.

Does anyone have any tips for freshwater fishing?

I just received my fishing license and I plan on going fishing this weekend. Do you have any tips for me?
Freshwater….I’m going to a lake and I really don’t care what kind of fish I get I just wanna catch fish.

For a first fun outing of casual fishing, I’d take a small tackle; sammiches/water and several types of bait.
Chances are you will catch something if you take nightcrawlers, cheese/bread and even hot dog pieces.
That will catch most anything in fresh water lakes.

I’d steer clear of anything that may obstruct your casting and large banks that would make it difficult to reel in your catch!

Don’t forget your sunscreen and have fun!

Clearance Fishing Tackle – Even Cheaper Online

As you know, online shopping is on average much cheaper then shopping in your local shopping mall or high street. In regards to fishing tackle, it is also cheaper to buy online. The reason why products are cheaper online is because suppliers can buy in bigger bulk and store the items, rather than rent out a shop, and display the items, which costs a lot of money. When one looks at fishing sites, there are many clearance fishing tackle sections. These sections consist of items sold at a reduced price. The main reasons clearance fishing tackle is reduced is because they are either outdated models or the company is trying to get rid of them to make room for different stocks.

I see shopping online for fishing tackle as a marvellous opportunity to save money. With more and more stores shopping online the competition is fiercely growing. This is why I say exploiting the situation. Due to the increase in competition, online fishing tackle shops are reducing prices on all tackles and increasing the amount of clearance tackle the sell. When one looks at high street tackle shops there is a clear difference between them and online stores. High street tackle shops are significantly more expensive then online stores. It is much harder for high street stores to reduce their rates because they have to pay rents, wages to staff, when online sales rates are significantly less.

I have also found that online stores have on average a larger selection of stock. The reason behind this is that stores have a limited amount of stock they can store and display in their shops. Whilst online stores can have their stock kept in boxes which take up less room. The only advertising they need to do is have a picture taken with a description. By selling a larger variety of goods, at a lower cost I believe that online shopping for fishing tackle is much better and more beneficial.   It is also possible to see that because of the increase in stock, there would be, intern a larger amount of clearance fishing tackle. With a larger selection of fishing tackle it is possible to see why more and more people are beginning to shop online.

The one other detail that I found most beneficial with buying online fishing tackle is that it is not just fishing rods, hood, reels and lines on sale, but everything. Such tackle boxes, outdoor fishing clothing and ruck sacks. This is very good, as it means that there is a huge selection to choose from, which potentially means that you do not have to pay full price on any of your tackle, if you shop online using many different website.

From what has been discussed in this article is i possible to see that clearance fishing tackle is on the whole better, as it is cheaper. But with online shopping clearance fishing tackle becomes even cheaper.

What kind of fish are you looking for? If anything you should try and support your local breeders. They usually are healthier prettier fish. Since usually they are not as inbreed and they don’t have to travel in a dark box for days which puts a lot of stress on the fish. Another great reason is that you can see the fishes personality and true colour in person.

If anywhere online though that I buy fish is aquabid.com Usually has quality fish, can get lots of rare fish or breeding fish and everything in between.

Learn How To Fish Downriggers

Savvy fishermen know downrigging is one of the best ways to control the depth of their fishing lure-short of dropping anchor. Preferably you want to try to keep your bait at the same depth that your fish finder shows the fish are located. You can become quite good at doing this after some trial and error, a bit of record keeping and lots of patience.

I preferr Cannon Downriggers.  I’ve tried some other brands but have never really been satisfied with them.  They generally fell apart too soon or rusted long before they should have, and I didn’t feel I got a real value for my money. However, some really great downrigging system are made by Cannon. They have more sufisticated systems, but I like to work with something a little easier, like the Mag 10TS, for example.

Experienced boaters and fishermen trust the Magnum because it has been proven to be extremely durable and dependable.  It offers a speedy retrieval rate of 250 feet per minute, includes a short-stop feature to protect their boat so that a swinging weight won’t put a hole in the side, and it is really tough and can handle a lot.

In particular, the Mag 10TS has a spool constructed of stainless steel that can deal with the “super lines” popular these days or monofilament.  It looks stylish with an attractive metallic white finish, and it features Positive Ion Control designed to make your boat a fish-finding magnet by creating an electrical field fish are drawn into.

To begin you want to decide how deep you want to be and at what speed you will troll. When trolling faster or going deeper, more weight will be needed.  This is because you must compensate for the drag of the water that increases with your trolling speed.

One example is most Great Lakes fishermen trolling for salmon set a speed of 1.5 up to 3 miles per hour and shoot for a depth of 15 to 30 feet down, so they don’t have a significant drag and can use a 5lb ball.  But deep sea fishermen trying to catch grouper-which often run at 60 feet below the surface or even deeper-troll at around 5 knots.  With that kind of depth and speed, they get quite a bit of drag.  So they probably need to use a 20lb weight.

After you have determined the weight ball you need you will still need to experiment some to be sure you’re on track.  Head out on the water to a depth similar to the depth at which you plan to fish. Set the boat speed to the desired trolling speed based on the fish you are trying to land.  Now drop the ball all the way to the bottom at which point you will you see the cable start to slack up.  Then quickly stop it and retrieve a bit of cable to tighten it back up. Now check the line counter on your downrigger.  Here’s where the record keeping comes in.

Write down that depth along with your trolling speed, the ball weight, and the water depth. Then try changing a bit. Each time you adjust your speed make a note of the information aquired.  Adjust the cable depth at the various speeds and take note of that.  Essentially you want to determine how much cable is ideal to let out at each particular depth and speed for the fish you are trying to catch.

By using some simple math like a percentage of cable needed to reach a certain depth or bottom you will be able to calculate how much cable to let out to be in the depth you desire.

My personal prefference is to stay about 10′ above the bottom.  For starters, I know bottom fish will still take the right bait from that distance.  They’ll come up to get it. I also don’t care for the idea of getting hung up on something on the bottom and being forced to cut loose my cable.

Another recommendation is to keep your lead line at 10′ or less from the ball to your bait so that you get the benifit of the negative Ion field that surrouds the ball. It has to be that close to use it.  If you’ve got too much lead line in between there, it won’t work.

In addition to the Cannon downrigger Mag 10TS, you’ll need some basics to get started. Using a good sturdy 7′ rod with a conventioal reel attached and the proper strenght line for the fish you are targeting, a well made line release attached to your ball, the right bait and a decent boat, you’ll soon be downrigging like a pro. Downrigging is an enjoyable way to fish and a skill you’ll soon master.

Buying Fitness Equipment On Ebay: Deals Or Duds?

This makes EFA’s an important part of your diet. Other sources of these fats are fish and nuts. Most of the fat in my diet comes from a combination of nuts and flax seed oil.

Several scientific studies show that consumption of omega-3 oils leads to a substantially lower risk of death from coronary heart disease.

But now let’s talk about the nutritional values of flax seed. They are the best source for Omega 3 fatty acids, which is great for the brain and concentration. Adding flax seeds to your diet can increase your ability to concentrate better and think faster.

Although drugs have very important clinical uses, they are only part of the solution. A comprehensive approach to treating cognitive disorders should include foods and supplements that benefit the overall health of brain cells.

Lignans and other flax seed components may also have antioxidant properties, which means they may reduce the activity of cell-damaging free radicals.

Buying Fitness Equipment On eBay: Deals or Duds?

With tens of millions of registered members and more than 12,000 items listed, eBay is, without a doubt, the world’s largest Internet marketplace. And you can buy just about anything there–from CDs, movies and vitamins to first edition books, new businesses and even someone’s last breath of air. But–what you want to know–is it the place to shop for fitness equipment?

The answer is yes, but that’s if you don’t mind sifting and, in most cases, bidding. On a given day in June 2003, there were 1,026,771 items listed under the “Sports” category; and there were 344,705 items in the “Sporting Goods” subcategory, which is broken down into more than three-dozen subcategories. Under “Exercise & Fitness,” a “Sporting Goods” subcategory, there were 7,146 items. And that subcategory is divided up into six subcategories. Hope you’re not too confused.

On that given June day, I took a look at several fitness products sold on eBay. I wanted to find out how low prices on new (never been used) popular or quality products go on this mega auction site. The good news: They can go pretty low.

One product I examined was Total Trainer, and there are several models listed on eBay. I zeroed in on the 3000 model, which is supposed to be comparable to the Brinkley- and Norris- endorsed Total Gym 3000. On eBay, Total Trainer is offered in two pricing formats: Name your own or Buy It Now (skip the auction process) for $277. Off eBay, Total Gym retails for, on average, $500.

But that should come as no big surprise, since any highly unsaturated oil will do that, particularly if substituted for saturated fats.

Studies show that Omega-3 fatty acids help lower cholesterol and blood triglycerides, and prevent clots in arteries, which may result in strokes, heart attacks and thromboses.

As a source of fiber mucilage, oral flaxseed (not flaxseed oil) may possess laxative properties, although only one human trial has been conducted for this indication.

But you should be drinking a lot of water after consuming the seeds.

Does Omega 3 Lowers Cholesterol? Does Flaxseed Oil Prevent Cancer too? The primary sources of omega-6 are corn, soy, canola, safflower and sunflower oil; these oils are overabundant in the typical diet, which explains our excess omega-6 levels.

I also compared a few other infomercial-marketed products. One, a knock-off of the Fast Abs bodybuilding belt, an electronic muscle stimulation device, runs for about $10 to $15 on eBay (with free shipping). Off eBay, the real product will cost you around $30, plus shipping/handling. Another, Smart ABS, is priced at $50 on eBay; off, it ranges between $70 and $80. A third product is a Fitness Quest glider similar to the Tony Little Gazelle Freestyle Elite. Buy it on eBay and you’ll pay roughly $220, almost half of what you would spend at Little’s official site.

The last product I checked out was Jolie Weights, one-pound attachable fitness shoe weights introduced this spring by Jolie World. At http://JolieWeights.com, these weights cost $19.99. An independent eBay seller was auctioning them for $14.99. That’s a 25 percent savings. Plus, shipping/handling charges are exactly the same.

The bottom line is: You will find some good deals on eBay. But there are a good number of duds there too. The best advice? Do your research before buying. Compare prices; read the fine print; ask the seller whether it’s a discontinued or irregular product; and be vigilant of bloated shipping/handling charges (a common practice among eBay sellers). A final tip: before buying anything, read the seller’s reviews, where buyers post their positive or negative shopping experiences. If the eBay seller has too many negatives, then you may want to pass on the deal. If the seller seems legitimate, and you’ve confirmed it’s a steal, jump on it.

The truth is that although the odds of surviving bypass surgery have improved since the operation was introduced, bypass surgery kills anywhere from 2% to 4% of the patients on the operating table, and more within a few months.

In this Omega-3 benefits and facts section you will learn the basics about omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA) from fish oils and their function in our bodies.

These beneficial fats play important roles in brain, nerve, glandular, and eye functions. In addition, they are involved in the transport and metabolism of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Let me first address the issue of fat. Fat seems to receive a lot of reprimand but the fact is we all need fat; fat helps nutrient absorption, nerve transmission, maintaining cell membrane integrity etc. However, when consumed in excess amount, fat contributes to weight gain, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Flax seed boasts a long history as a healing herb. First cultivated in Europe, the plant’s brown seeds were regularly used to prepare balms for inflamed skin and healing slurries for constipation.

Your First Fishing Trip – Important Things You Must Know

Prior to delving into the technicalities of fishing and fishing gear, you should have your paper work in order. Remember that many spots in the US and around the world require anglers to have a fishing permit or license before they can fish in waters conditioned for good fishing.

Once you have your required paper work in order you need to have a basic fishing kit, a kit that includes just the basic equipment for you to catch a fish or two and one that you can add to as you gain experience along the way. Common sense will have you know that you need to match the fishing line to the fishing rod and reel. Once you have perfectly matched rod, reel and line you will be well on your way to an enjoyable fishing experience. A well matched fishing line and reel prevents anglers from encountering what is called a bird’s nest. However, have no fear even the most experienced of fishermen encounter that problem from time to time.

The first accomplishment for an amateur angler is to have a perfectly matched fishing rod, line, reel and lure. This set is not very expensive and is expected to cost an amateur angler somewhere between $25 to $40, and these last for many years. Look ot for three main points while purchasing your first rod:

• Guides that come attached to the rod
• Type of grip or handle that is essential for a good rod
• Reel set for different kinds of line.

There are many kinds of fishing rods to choose from. Some rods are a single piece of bamboo or fiber-glass, while others can be dismantled into multiple pieces and can be stored away in a fishing fit. There are no nuts and bolts to assemble the dismantle-able fishing rods. Just insert the ends into each other and you are ready to go. Try bending the rod to ensure flexibility before buying the rod. This will ensure your comfort level with the equipment.

When shopping for a fishing rod you should try to get yourself one that is 6 feet long and not too heavy. If you do not want to buy a rod to begin with you could get yourself a long flexible stick that is easily fund around the place you plan to fish.

When it comes to fishing lines you are in luck. In the past there were lines made from horse’s hair. These lines had to be dried before reeling them in to prevent them from rotting. Likewise there were the silk lines that also needed to be dried for the same reason. Today we have nylon fishing lines that come in many gauges and weights. These lines do not tangle easily nor do they have to be dried. So take your pick.

In the end of it all the fishing gear, line hook, reels and rod must match to ensure you have an enjoyable fishing trip with the least of hitches. Try to add sub glasses, a fishing knife, line clippers, fist aid kit, fishing that to block out the sun and of course your snacks and drinks!

How do you feel about husbands who leave the family to go on fishing trips?

I grew up where it was all about family trips, not husband saying bye I’ll see you in a week. He says I have security issues, no, that’s just not the way I grew up.

Trust is a huge thing in any relationship. He needs his time. YOU NEED YOUR TIME. and You and He need time together, and you all need family time. Kids need time with both parents and they need individual time with eachh parent. This does not have to be an “equal time” thing, or a Schedule thing. Let times flow. While he is gone make your time special with kids or parents or siblings or friends. This is a good thing. RELAX!!!!

Salt Water Equipment
Salt Water Equipment

SEVEN SECRETS SALT WATER POOL SELLERS DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW

SECRET #1
Salt water systems corrode the pool equipment.

The Facts – The salt itself has issues of attacking the cement in the plaster and deck materials. This is a relatively slow process when the salt levels are low. The salt also can kill any landscaping in or around the pool as well as in the backwash area.

If the sodium hypochlorite levels are too high, the corrosion is caused by the chlorine being produced by the electrolytic cell. Chlorine can bleach the test reagents, giving you a “false negative”, and people can grossly over-chlorinate their pool damaging equipment, the pool surface, lighting fixtures, and ladders. Over time the salt will attack any area the water evaporates at.

A common problem is corrosion at the ladder. The deck anchors are usually cast aluminum and the ladder should be stainless steel. The salt water will corrode the anchors overtime and a “safety event” will be pending.

Buyers should be aware that if you have salt water above 2800 ppm, (often 4000 to 5000 ppm), you will need to reseal your coping every year, especially if it is a porous stone like limestone or travertine. Otherwise, the salt will dry and start to etch the coping. Besides sealing the stone, it is also advisable and an added precaution to hose down the coping at the end of any swim day with fresh water. Although the salt water in the pool may not be corrosive at levels of 3000-3500 ppm, when that water hits the coping and evaporates, it leaves pure salt behind. The pure salt is corrosive and is the main cause of the corroding coping. Most autocover manufacturers now void their track warranty if a salt system is used.

Some pool builders are now refusing to build any salt water pools with cream limestone or taupe coping. Any customer that wants either coping for a salt water rock or gunnite pool must usually sign a release form. Pool builders have said that they have had to replace a significant amount of both these types of coping this past year. Cantilever designs simply disappear as the stone dissolves away.

SECRET #2
Salt water systems require chemicals almost every week.

The obvious weekly use of muriatic acid is combined with the not so obvious need to use cyanuric acid to guarantee your salt chlorine generator can achieve 1-3 ppm chlorine residual in your pool. Since salt water pools produce chlorine, the sanitizing effectiveness of the system is impacted by changes in temperature, bather load, sunlight and rainfall. CYANIDE based, the CYANURIC acid is euphemistically referred to as conditioner or stabilizer and must be maintained between 35 and 85 ppm. Stabilized levels over 100 are harmful to children, pets, older swimmers, the pool itself and of course the environment.

Occasional algaecide, clarifier, stain and scale control and shock will be needed with a salt chlorine pool (maybe slightly more than a stabilized “puck” pool) and only the handling of the solid chlorine is avoided. Numerous other sanitation devices will cut overall chemical use, a salt system may not.

SECRET #3
Salt water systems require cell replacement every 2 to 3 years at a cost of $500-$800.

With over 40 manufacturers in the salt water generator business the cell warranty ranges from 1 to 3 years and the replacement costs are from $500 self-installed to $800 installed by a dealer. Assuming the owner gets to the fourth year with the cell, salt can be one of the most expensive methods to sanitize the pool. If the cell does not make it through the third year, salt becomes the most expensive system in terms of operating cost.

SECRET #4
You must worry about the pH with a salt system and do regular maintenance or you will destroy the pool and have zero recourse.

The Fact – When the pH and alkalinity get out of balance, the chlorine is much less effective. The pH should be 7.4-7.6. Chlorinating with a salt water chlorinator is similar to chlorinating with liquid chlorine– they both have a high pH (11.7). One common problem is that homeowners tend not to test their pools’ pH and alkalinity enough. Unfortunately, too many builders and retailers sell these systems as a “set it and forget it” solution. Most people with salt systems will run their pH from 7.8-8.0. This is bad for two reasons: 1) the pool is in a scaling mode, and 2) the chlorine is locked up by the basisity of the higher pH. It is best to run between 7.4-7.6 when using chlorine. Lack of pH management can ruin the cell in less than 90 days, scaling up the swimming pool as well as the cell. “Improper chemical use” will void any warranty, a system employed by portable spa manufacturers on delaminated shells and first year heater failure.

SECRET #5
Salt systems are more harmful to human health than conventional chlorine, bromine or bioguanide chemicals.

With a salt system your skin will absorb sodium, salt, AND chlorine, versus just the halogen with a chemical sanitizer such as chlorine or bromine. Sodium absorption through the skin has long been known to present health risks at levels far below the 3000-5000 ppm levels salt chlorine generators require. For nearly 20 years people with high blood pressure, stroke history or other circulatory system issues have been asked to stop using their water softeners (at 200-400 ppm sodium in the water for just ten minutes in the shower) to avoid the heart mortality risks. The chlorine level and skin absorption of the chlorine is still based on the same 1-3 ppm chlorine residuals found, dioxin forms (as do chloramines) and the backwash water contains 3000 ppm or more chlorides.

SECRET #6
Salt systems are damaging to the environment and have been banned on all pools in areas such as Los Angeles County.

While the “Ban the Brine” movement may have not picked up much steam in recent years, individual counties banning chloride discharge such as Livingston County, Michigan or specific bans on salt water chlorine generators in Los Angeles County, California have gotten regional attention. Those existing Los Angeles area salt water generators when the ordinance was passed are NOT “grandfathered” in.

SECRET #7
One size does not fit all and salt generators use both high voltage AND high amperage outputs.

The Facts – It is essential when selecting a salt chlorinator to oversize the unit for your pool. You are better off having a chlorinator too large for your pool, one that is undersized is a complete waste of money. A chlorinator too large can be turned back or run for less time each day, making the cell last longer. A unit too small will mean algae problems later on if you don’t run it for longer periods each day or add extra chlorine on a regular basis. The high amperage output of the cell will add between 500 to 1000 watts per day or 1.0 KW to 1.5 KW to your electric demand and monthly bill, at .11? per watt, this is $5 to $11 every month. Electric rates range from .11? to .19? per KW and will not likely decrease in price.

There is no maintenance on a salt water pool.

Fact – All salt water generator cells require cleaning every 90 days. This must be carried out before the calcium build up within the cell housing becomes one big block. If not cleaned for six months, four expensive things occur, (even with the unit turned off the scale still forms):
•    The cell housing breaks when you attempt to clean it.
•    The cell life shortens as the high voltage/amperage cannot penetrate the scale on the plates.
•    The pool becomes a swamp when the cell scales up.
•    The electronic box blows – due to scale on the cell or salt ppm above 5000 in the pool.
It is also very important to watch the salt level in the pool. A low salt level (less than 2000 ppm) will cause oxygen production and damage the platinum group metals on the cell anode, therefore, shortening the life of the cell. It is recommended that you try to keep the salt level at the higher end of the manufacturer’s scale, for your specific model.

With a salt water pool, the owner MUST maintain a proper pH or the pool will scale, stain brown and destroy the cell. Also cyanuric acid levels must be maintained or the chlorine will quickly dissipate out of the pool.

Before you buy a device and throw 200 to 500lbs of salt in your pool, remember an old term – “Salting the Earth”, 2000 years ago mankind knew better.

how to test the salt content of water used for shrimp production?

what particular equipments can we use to measure the salt content of water in a fishpond?

Easiest way is use hydrometer. You fill a clear cylinder with the water then set the hydrometer in and see where the water line lines up with a graduation on the hydrometer. Get one graduated in degrees Baume. The percent salt is the same as the Baume number.

What is the best bait to use i am fishing for stripers of a Rhode Island Beach?

Also i have a surfcasting pole but i am new to salt water fishing and would like to no more about the equipment i should use.

Bunker (Menhanden) is the best. You cut the fish into five pieces not including the head. Also, you could use mackerel, but there hasn’t been to many mackerels around. If you could catch them on a shiny lure, shad also work. Along with bunker and mackerel, you have to cut the shad into pieces, about five pieces per fish for bait. As far as equipment, I use a 10’6″ St. Croix Triumph fishing rod and a Shamino Baitrunner 4500B from the Long Island surf. I line the reel spool with 20-pound test pink Ande fishing line.

Visiting Mississippi on Your Next Road Trip

From Jackson’s Governor’s Mansion and the antique shops in Collins and Hattiesburg, to Biloxi’s lighthouse and Pascagoula’s alligators, the state of Mississippi both welcomes and entertains. Mississippi campgrounds and Mississippi RV resorts are often open year round, so come on down!

Kicking things off in the city of Jackson, our first stop is the Chimneyville Crafts Gallery, which features demonstrations, exhibits, and sales of a fabulous variety of original pieces produced by the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, Inc. It’s a great place to create a friendship with local artisans. Head over to the circa 1841 Mississippi Governor’s Mansion, a good stop for amateur historians. The impeccable Greek Revival-style estate is a designated National Historic Landmark. For a little floral boost before departing Mississippi’s state capital, walk among the camellias, azaleas, and songbirds at the city’s beautiful Mynelle Gardens.

From Jackson, drive south on US-49 all the way to Gulfport. Easy on the gas pedal there, Leadfoot; there are a few nice towns we’d like you to see along the way. Start in Mendenhall and its namesake Grocery & Grain, a country store built back in 1928. All it takes is a step through its doors to transport you back in time. From whole vanilla beans and Mississippi-made foods, to handcrafted pottery and bird houses, Mendenhall’s Grocery & Grain stocks up on vintage fun.

There’s more old-time shopping to be found in the town of Mount Olive. You can order a custom-designed furnishing at Diehl Brothers Furniture, pick up homemade jams and a hand-stitched quilt at Martha’s Kitchen, or visit Roger’s Basketry for signature soaps and baskets tinted with natural nut dyes.

A great selection of time-tested wares is readily available in the antique shops of Collins. Might we also suggest loading up the rig with straight-from-the-soil goodies at Mitchell Farms, where antiques are offered alongside fruits, veggies, and fresh-harvested peanuts? Be sure to browse the shelves at Pope Company General Store, a sprawling, circa 1913 establishment that carries everything from feed n’ seed to kitchen equipment and comfy shoes.

Shady Acres fruit stand yields much more than produce for the town of Seminary’s lucky visitors. Make room in your basket for baked treats, rich ice cream, sweet jellies, and homespun candies. The nearby city of Hattiesburg has several antique malls and art galleries to explore, while Gulfport is a good place to embark on a windswept offshore cruise.

From Gulfport, pick up US-90 east. Take a break in Biloxi for more appealing river cruise options. You can make reservations for sightseeing, fishing, dinner cruises, or sunset viewing on your choice of small craft, sailing schooner, shrimp boat, or pontoon boat. From Biloxi Lighthouse, there’s also a memorable adventure waiting for you aboard the street-based, open-air Biloxi Tour Train, known as the “shrimp train” by local folks, that drives through Biloxi’s Historical District.

Pascagoula is the final stop on our Mississippi sojourn. On a Gulf Coast Gator Ranch visit, carve some time in the day to stroll along boardwalks that wind through alligator territory and take an airboat ride through a genuine Mississippi swamp. Since Mississippi is so well traveled by RVers and road travelers, we recommend that you reserve at Mississippi campgrounds and Mississippi RV camping resorts ahead of time.

Fly Equipment
Fly Equipment

8 Reasons Why you as a New Fly Fisherman Should Join a Club

I still remember watching my dad up to his waist in a rushing Colorado stream casting flies for trout. I was too young for that kind of fishing (although at the age of six I had caught a trout off the bridge in front of our home, using a spinning reel and a worm).

It fascinated me to watch the glistening line whipping repeatedly back and forth over his head as he sought to get enough distance to put the fly where he wanted it.

The memory of the heavy strikes and the subsequent fights with lunker trout (that we ate that night) drove me to fly fishing later in life, but I took it up with certain amount of trepidation.

I have to admit I was somewhat intimidated. Fly fishing took a lot of skill, I thought. More that I felt I had.

JUST A LITTLE MORE SKILL?

Arguably, fly fishing takes just a little more skill, or “know-how”, as my dad might put it, than other forms of fishing.

Matching up your equipment is just the beginning, learning to cast takes practice, not just to get familiar with how the reel works as it spools off line, but to gain the dexterity to place the fly where it needs to go — to drop it right in front of a lunker you suspect is lying in a pool behind that big rock.

Then comes fly tying — not really necessary — but a skill that puts you miles ahead of the fisherman that buys flies off the shelf, who can’t “match the flies to hatch”, or create them “on the spot”.

More skill than you or I possess, you may ask? No, not necessarily. Not if you find and associate with the right people, those who already possess the skills, and are more than willing to impart them to you.

A SOLITARY SPORT?

At first glance, fly fishing seems a solitary sport. While you might see more than one fly fisherman wading in a stream or a lake, they appear to be pretty isolated from one another, not exactly like a bunch of golf buddies pulling a cart and shooting above par.

The fact is that that individual fly fisherman probably has a lot of “back-up” contacts and friends; you just can’t see them because they’re all part of the club he belongs to.

He as acquired many of his skills by associating with other people.

WHY JOIN A CLUB?

In our busy schedules, clubs take time away from other things we probably should be doing. In many cases, clubs are time wasters, put together by people who have an obsession with following “Robert’s Rules of Order”.

Fly fishing clubs, however, are close to a necessary item on the fisherman’s menu — that is if he also wants to include fish on that same menu.

There are many reasons for joining a club. By associating with enthusiastic fellow fisherman at a higher (and lower) experience level than your own, you can

– discover more about your equipment.

– learn how to choose rods, reels, line, and gear.

– hone your basic skills. Get tips about such things casting, fly selections and determining “where the fish are” in a variety of environmental situations.

– learn how make equipment. Maybe you’d like to make your own fly rod from a blank or discover what equipment and materials you need to tie flies.

– uncover the best places to go to catch fish. Fly fishermen will divulge these things to friends they respect.

– plan trips and vacations. A fishing trip is not a trip unless you take people you like and are as enthusiastic as you are.

– help those less experienced. It’s always good to impart what you know. It’s said that a teacher best learns his own craft by teaching others.

– experience the camaraderie that comes with getting together with like minded enthusiasts.

TYPES OF CLUBS

Fly fishing clubs can be national, regional, local, or ones that are strictly internet based. Many cater to beginners or focus on fly tying or other techniques.

Three notable National Clubs are

– Federation of Fly Fishers

– International Women Fly Fishers

– Trout Unlimited

These clubs are dedicated to education and preservation of cold water species and habitats, and are great for educational opportunities.

Regional and local fly fishing clubs such as those indigenous to your state or city may provide a little more of the camaraderie you’re looking for, as well as information that you can apply to waters you’ll find where you live.

Internet clubs may be fun to join as well. You can post to forums and get tips by internet messenger or email.

Clubs you can find in your city or neighborhood may be the best for getting the kind of “hands on” experience you’re looking for. Check with your local bait and tackle shops for information on what’s available, and if you can’t find one, start one. Those same bait and tackle shops will jump at the chance of posting fliers for you and recommending their customers.

NO LONGER ALONE

Each type of club caters to a different need, and you might find it beneficial to join more than one. By doing so, you’ll find you’re not alone.

Even if you’re out in the stream by yourself, you’re surrounded by your friends in the club. When you see that fish rise, when it slams into your fly, your ears will ring with their enthusiastic support –

“Now, don’t horse him in, give him his head!”

“Keep your line tight.”

“Okay, now he’s tired, you can start bringing him in.”

“Keep your rod tip up.”

And finally,

“ALL RIGHT, NICE ONE! HOW BIG IS HE? I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT”

No, with your new-found club friends, you’re definitely no longer alone.

Is drag racing dangerous if you have all the right safety equipment?

My boyfriend used to drag race and said he might do it again if he had the time and money. He said he would only do it at the drag strip where there are no other cars or cross streets, and would use all the safety equipment. He says it is safer than flying in an airplane, which I occasionally do when I go out of state. What is your opinion on this? Is it safe or dangerous?

I’ve been drag racing for more than 40 years.
I’m yet to ever get a scratch from it.
Use the safety equipment the way it’s supposed to be used and BACK OUT OF IT if something starts to go wrong.
I think driving on a public roadway is much more unsafe……..

Koi Carp Ponds – Essential Guide to Getting Started Part 2

A great way to begin planning for Koi carp ponds is to view how others of have successfully designed and built their ponds. Searching online is the fastest and easiest way to get started, as there is an endless resource of photos and information to be found there. Seeing how others have done things can spark wide imagination and creative ideas into how you would like your Koi pond to look, and the potential of how it could enhance the overall impression of your garden landscape. Decorations of plans, stones, statues, wooden ornaments and fixtures can have a dramatic and pleasant impact on the dynamics of your Koi garden. However, in regard to including any plants in your pond, be sure to take into consideration that Koi will eat certain plants as well as dig into the soil, which could lead to a potential messing of the pond water thus leading to more frequent cleaning and maintenance. There are plants that are suited well for Koi carp ponds, and covering the plant soil with stones or large gravel can alleviate much of this potential problem. Another great way to include plants in your pond development and keep them safe from your Koi is to put them in a floating island pond planter. Floating islands are great for decorating your Koi pond with beautiful plant life while at the same time providing needed shade and protection from predators for your Koi fish. Again, professional advice is golden.

When seeking the help of an expert, it is wise to do your research first. Get an understanding of the specific questions you should be asking as well as a general sense of the answers you should be getting. Talk to several specialists as apposed to only one or two. Visit your local pet stores to gain knowledge on Koi keeping, Koi supplies and pond equipment, along with construction and maintenance of Koi carp ponds. Get yourself familiar with why you need a Koi pond filter, a Koi pond pump and maybe an aerating device, and how these vital necessities work together to provide a natural, stable Koi fish environment while supplying healthy clean water for your Koi to live and thrive. Develop an awareness of the consistent routine work of Koi keeping and pond maintenance, including water pH level testing, pond and filter cleaning, Koi feeding and inspection of any parasites or diseases, along with any general garden maintenance such as weeding and algae removal.

Protection from predators is a factor to take into consideration at the planning stage of Koi carp ponds. Koi supplies such as overhangs or pond net covers could prove invaluable in keeping your Koi fish safe from other hungry animals. Also, ensuring that the pond water has enough depth for the Koi to submerge out of sight from predators, as well as shading themselves from direct sunlight when needed, is a necessary element in the planning of your Koi pond.

Budgeting for the costs of running and maintaining your pond should be well thought out before hand. Shop around by researching online, as well as visiting your local pet stores, for prices on all things necessary and get a clear idea of what Koi carp ponds entail in regards to buying Koi fish, Koi food, pond cleaning supplies, water testing and treatment supplies, pond filter media, the potential energy costs of running pond filters, pond pumps, fountains and waterfalls, along with the construction materials and tools required to do the job properly. Making a concise list sorted into categories with sub totals of each will allow you to develop a clearer idea of potential monthly and yearly running costs.

question about koi?

i am starting my journey as a practicing buddhist and would enjoy getting som koi (AKA japanese carp) for my house. I was wondering if they had to be in pond or could i have an aquarium. if i can do the aquarium route what equipment would i need for it.
such as:
-pump
-filters
-etc
ok another question stemming off of this one. are there smallre fish that are like koi that do not get so big?? if so wha re they. I have a 22 gallon tank but can’t afford the 100+ tank.

Skip the koi and go with something smaller. I think you will find that there are many elegant, smaller fish that will fit in with your practice.

An angelfish or bolivian rams would be nice. Blue rams are my favorite, but they require a lot of maintenance discipline to keep alive.

Cannon Fishing Equipment
Cannon Fishing Equipment

Be Careful.. Snakes

RECENTLY, while workers were excavating an ancient walled city in Manila, they found an old cannon still loaded with live ammunition. Suddenly, the workers scrambled out of the excavation. Because of the cannon? No, because they had found a pile of snakes eggs, and parent snakes sometimes stay near their eggs until they hatch. The cry went out, Be careful, snakes! The workers feared the snakes more than the loaded cannon.

Unless you live in Ireland, New Zealand, some isolated islands, or areas of permanently frozen subsoil like the Arctic, there are snakes in your country. But the greatest profusion is in the tropics, and in the Philippines they are very common. However, of the almost 3,000 known varieties fewer than 200 are dangerous to man.

Examination reveals snakes to be a valuable part of the creation, albeit one to be treated with caution. They come in all sizes, from a slim six inches (15 cm) long to a bulky 40 feet (12 m). They are cold-blooded, meaning that their body temperature changes with the temperature of their surroundings. They are not slimy to the touch. Rather, their shiny scales feel dry and tough.

Watching a gymnast, you may be impressed with the suppleness of the human body. But, while our backbone may have 33 or 34 vertebrae, a snake may have over 300. One snake had 565! Hence, it can twist itself into amazing positions. Each vertebra has a pair of long, movable ribs attached. The snake moves along by the concerted action of these ribs and its scales. Usually its speed is about two to three miles an hour (3 to 5 km/h), but running men can be hard pressed to stay ahead of some snakes known as racers.

The snake is diet does not sound appealing: earthworms, insects, fishes, frogs, birds, other snakes or mammals especially rats and mice. But that is what they like. Because of the way their jaws are joined together by elastic ligaments, snakes can swallow whole objects wider than their mouths. Like us, they like to eat regularly, but unlike us, they can get along on just three or four big meals a year. In fact, some snakes can fast for a whole year and survive.

The Snake’s Senses

Our impressions of the world depend largely on what we see, hear, taste, smell and touch. What about the snake? Well, it can see also, but not too clearly at a distance. It quickly notices sudden movement, however. Some question whether it can hear, since it has no external ears. Researchers stimulating the snake?s auditory nerve were able to detect electrical impulses, indicating that it can. Also, it is sensitive to ground vibrations.

Can a snake smell? Yes. In fact, male snakes recognize females by means of smell. Additionally, the snake?s forked tongue is a remarkable piece of equipment. This flicks around picking up minute particles from the environment, which go into tiny cavities in its mouth. These cavities are linked to the smell organs. By this means, the snake can follow a cold trail where the scent would be too faint even for a bloodhound.

The pit viper has another remarkable ability. The ?pit,? which is a peculiar depression between the eye and the nostril in this snake?s head, is highly sensitive to heat radiation and air vibrations. With it, the viper can trail and strike a warm-blooded prey even at night. The pit viper is also unusual in that its fangs are not permanently erect. Normally, they fold into its mouth, but when the snake strikes, it moves them into an attacking position and strikes with a stabbing motion that enables it to penetrate clothing. These two characteristics make the pit viper one of the Philippines? more dangerous snakes.

Be Alert

Most people living in tropical countries have had experiences with snakes. In the Philippines, the most dangerous is probably the cobra, because it often lives near people and is ill-tempered.

For example, one morning a 14-year-old boy came downstairs to his father?s store and stepped on a Luzon cobra! The snake reared up to strike. Its mate rushed from a nearby crate of bottles to join the attack. With the snakes chasing, the boy ran behind some sacks of rice and finally escaped outside. Eventually, the cobras were cornered. In furious defense, one spat and hit a pursuer on the forehead with its venom. It was aiming for the eyes. Cobra venom in the eyes is very painful and can damage the eyesight unless washed out immediately. Finally, both snakes were killed.

Another time, a Samar cobra visited an assembly of Jehovah?s Witnesses. It was doubtless attracted by the cool, shaded grass under the speaker?s platform. After the assembly, many delegates crowded around the platform to take photographs of one another. They were still there when workers began to dismantle the platform. The cobra was disturbed and angrily reared to strike. One of the delegates, a Mansaka tribesman, on hearing the movement, quickly seized a piece of wood and killed the snake.

We have another, less common cobra in this country: the king cobra. This has the dubious distinction of being the world?s largest poisonous snake. This cobra, too, is fierce and aggressive.

On the other hand, the sea snake, although poisonous, is usually gentle and inoffensive. Once, while on a trip to Samal Island, some vacationers found one swimming along with them. It was put in a jar and shown around to everyone. Then it was released. These gentler snakes, often gold and black, live in shallow coastal waters.

Be Sensible

Snakes usually do not attack unless provoked. Hence, a sensible person can generally avoid them. It is good not to walk without protective clothing through areas known to have snakes. Many are bitten when they tread with bare or sandaled feet on snakes hidden in the grass, or when they pick up a snake along with an armful of grass.

But what happens if, in spite of being careful, someone gets bitten? Well, first of all, don?t panic. Remember, most snakes are not poisonous. And even if someone is bitten by a venomous snake, all is not lost.

There are two basic ingredients in snake venom. One, called hemolytic, attacks the lining of blood vessels and breaks up blood corpuscles. The other, neurotoxic, attacks the nerve centers, especially those connected with breathing. Of those bitten by predominantly neurotoxic snakes?like the cobra?three out of five have no significant poisoning at all, and it is by no means inevitable that the other two will die. Even in the case of snakes with the more dangerous hemolytic poisons predominating, one out of five victims bitten is not severely poisoned.

How should a snakebite be handled? Well, first lay the patient down. Give him no alcohol and keep him as still as possible. If the bite is near an extremity, tie a band firmly on the side of the bite nearest the trunk of the body. This band should be tight enough to retard the blood flowing back through the veins to the body, but not so tight as to block the deep-lying vessels. Loosen the band for a minute and a half every 15 minutes.

Then get the patient to a doctor immediately, especially if you see large prominent teeth marks beside the circle or circles of small dents. This usually betrays a venomous snakebite. If possible, kill the snake and take it with you to help the doctor identify it.

Snakes Are Not All Bad

The few poisonous varieties of snakes tend to make people overlook the good qualities of these reptiles. For many, they are a source of food. Their skin can be useful for leather, and snake venom is used to produce anticoagulants and pain relievers. Possibly their greatest contribution is in rodent control. Rats and mice which damage vast amounts of foodstuffs are a prominent part of their diet.

Meanwhile, excavations continue at the ancient city of Intramuros. The diggers have uncovered many ancient chambers and tunnels. But you can be sure that, as they penetrate these links with the past, they remember the warning: Be careful, snakes!

Real life of deep sea fish

Deep Sea Fish

Introduction:

Deep sea fish is the term given to fishes that live below the photic zone of the ocean. The types of deep sea fish are lantern fish, flashlight fish, cookie cuter shark, bristle mouths, anglerfish and viperfish, hatchet, gulper eel and whale. The endangered species of deep sea include blue hyke, spiny eel, spiny tail skate, round nose grenadier and onion-eye grenadier. They are on the verge of extinction due to the shift of commercial fisheries from the continental slopes to continental shelves area up to 6000 meters. Another contributing factor is the slow reproduction of these fishes.

Habitat:

The photic zone lies few hundred meters below the water; this region is not much explored. This fishes are weird and most mysterious species on Earth. Although they have evolved in harsh climate, they don’t survive in laboratory conditions and so they are still unknown. Less amount of research has been done about them as the expenses of equipments for exploring deep sea is high. They are recognized by their scientific names as only scientists know about them. Many species in the deep sea emit lights called luminescent which attracts other fish.

Apart from these they live under high pressure and the climate is very cold here. The water has high quantity of nutrients which are obtained from the accumulated wastes sinking form the high level. Oxygen content in this water is high which is about 5-6%.

There is very less light reaching this surface of the earth and so the process of photosynthesis does not take place. They survive on the organic matter that sinks on from higher surface. These areas are poor in productivity. So the fishes here have jelly-like flesh and have a minimal bone structure.

Adaptations

In order to survive from the predators, they use the technique of Camouflage in which they merge into the surroundings. Some animals allow the light to pass through them and become transparent. Whereas the fishes that are black colored could easily escape in the darkness. These fishes live in areas where there is no natural light available, so they cannot rely on the eyes for feeding and mating. They have adapted to darkness by large eyes known as bioluminescent or feelers which help them to locate their mates.

Types of Deep sea fishes:

Lantern fish:

It accounts for 65% of all the deep sea biomass. Their length varies between 3cm to 35 cm and has a pattern of photophores all down the body. It swims to the top to catch the prey. These fishes if are brought above to the surface they cannot survive and their organs and eyes will explode.

Whales: They dive in deep sea in search of prey

.

Viperfish: It is one of the scariest fish found in deep sea. It has long sharp clear teeth and light is used to catch their prey.

Hatchet: It possesses light that grabs the attention of their prey.

Gulper eels: They have a huge head and mouth to gulp their prey easily. They have elastic stomachs help them to eat large fishes.

Ideas for my Dad’s 50th?

I am in the UK and my Dad is in Australia. It is his 50th soon and I am really stuck for ideas as to what I could get him. He likes fishing more than anything but that avenue is exhausted – he has a boat and all the fishing equipment in the world and has been out on deep sea fishing trips a lot. Him and my Mum go away for short breaks a lot on the weekend so I couldn’t do that. Any ideas? Many thanks

A Saltwater Fishing Equipment Primer

Saltwater fishing is an exciting and rewarding sport. There are a lot of products out there to enhance the fishing experience. However, a beginner would greatly benefit from reading a saltwater fishing equipment guide to ensure their safety and preparedness before leaving dry land.

You will need a good rod and reel. It is best if the rod and reel are rust free and have been washed with fresh water after every use. You will also need proper bait. Many experienced fisherman track bait fish, and catch it with a cast net by chumming the water. There are also a lot of lures and rigs that can be used to catch a variety of species.

A prepared fisherman should always carry a knife and a net to aid in the catch. Even if the fish will not be kept, these items are still vital to the fishing process and will be used quite often.

You should always carry extra fishing line and hooks with you as the skilled saltwater angler knows that quite often, something other than a fish is hooked and the line will snap. Depending on the type of fishing you are doing, there are a variety components that can go on your line.

It is good to keep these things in one place so they are readily available. A lure box is a convenient piece of equipment to have when saltwater fishing. If you are on a boat, it safeguards all these weights, hooks, bobbers, extra line and lures in one place.

If you are fishing from a boat, there are several other pieces of equipment that could be of great use. A depth finder is a crucial piece of equipment as the water can hide hazards or often get shallow with no warning. A depth finder will warn you when the water is getting too shallow, and will often alert you to schools of fish below.

If you do reach shallow waters, but still want to fish in them, a trolling motor would be a smart choice to install on a boat. A trolling motor will allow some flat bottomed fishing boats to get through water as shallow as eight to twelve inches and will not scare the fish away since it is so quiet.

There is an abundance of saltwater fishing equipment out there. These items will help you get started and on your way to hooking some fish. You should always be prepared and make sure you have the required safety items needed when fishing. Most states have laws demanding mandatory items to be kept on all vessels, so make sure you are complying with your states’ laws before getting out on the water.

Are most fishing lures and equipment made to rust on purpose just so you have to buy more?

I take good care of my stuff and I always rinse everything regularly even if I don’t use it.
I rinse anything I use with fresh water ASAP and I rinse the other stuff just because it gets exposed to the elements.
I just bought a few items that bragged about specific parts being anti corrosive and those were the first parts to rust and they rusted horribly. I have some stuff I use daily that doesn’t rust and others that I hardly use rusted a lot.
Also some lead sinkers stay shiny and some turn dark right away.

Bees-

it sure does seem like its a plot to get you to buy more tackle, but there’s always a reason, and that ain’t it.

I make my living as a sheet metal worker, so I know a little bit about how corrosion works. electricians, who are much smarter than us (just ask them) actually have an IP code, that rates the amount of corrosion a particular item can handle.

Us stupid metal workers are left to our own devices, so they came up with a Galvanic series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_series
This shows how “noble” or resistant to rusting, these metals and semi metals are, they put them in saltwater, just like us.

since you said you rinse in fresh, I’m assuming that you fish in salt. rinsing with fresh is just the first step, if its a reel or an item with lots of places where salt and nasties can hide, then salt-x or something similar is in order, then you must DRY it thoroughly.Remember, the amount of water pressure needed to remove all of the salt is usually enough to force the same bad stuff INSIDE your gear, so unless you take everything apart every time you use it (I do) expect it to be a never ending battle.

when it comes to terminal tackle (hooks, jigs, etc.) refer to the Galvanic series. Much of the metal used is at the bottom of the list. I use bronze coated wire hooks because they’re MADE to rust, but that’s another subject. there are two things to keep in mind if you find your loosing this stuff to rust. The first is that, mere repeated exposure to moist salt air will rust your hooks, if you buy them in 100 packs, take what you think you’ll need for your trip. Second, If your hook box gets rust in it, chuck it, it will just recontaminate the next batch.

Some store bought lead sinkers have a nickle coating, which MIGHT be why they stay shiny.

Penn International: The Reel For Big Fish

If you’re looking to break the most recent International Game Fish Association (ICSA) world record, then you’d better bring your Penn International reel with you. The Penn International series is known throughout the world as the leader in big game fishing reels. Its outstanding performance and unique features ranks it high above the rest of the reels in the market.

The Penn International series was first released into the market in 1966. In just a little over 10 years, it became the foremost fishing reel for big game fishermen. In the forty years it has been in production, the Penn International series of reels has played a central role in the victory of big game fishermen in over 200 world records.

If you do not already know the marvelous features of a Penn International reel, read on.

1. Full Metal Body. Each and every reel in the Penn International series is made of a one piece aluminum frame with side plates. This way, you won’t have to worry about gear alignment since the side plates are integrated into the frame. These patented integrated side plates also makes it possible for you to get super high drags with fewer parts.

2. Push to Turn Preset Knob. With just a push of this knob, you can keep the drag in position.

3. Dura Drag Washers. This feature increases your functional drag range, letting you use thinner diameter lines.

4. Braid Ready. The versatile Penn International series is equipped to manage the extra strain that braided lines put on a reel. The same fishing reel you use for a 50-pound catch can be used to bring in a 200-lb beauty.

Aside from these common features, the reels in the Penn International series also have elements that distinguish them from other models. The Penn International VSX (Extreme) Two Speed Series has a ratcheted lever that deters drag creep after several hours of trolling. Managing this reel is effortless since it has 4 ball bearings to help you reel in your catch easily. This reel was designed to withstand extreme drag settings, yet at the same time keep a smooth curve. The Penn International V Two Speed Series has a Quick Shift 2-Speed Retrieval System so that you can quickly change into either high or low gear. The International Torque Star and Lever Drags have a feature called Versa Drag that lets you adjust the drag for different fish and sea conditions. These models combine the most resilient star drag with remarkable cranking power and a disengaging pinion into a single fishing reel. The International Torque was named by the American Sportfishing Association Saltwater Reel of the Year in 2006. A Penn International baitcast has an infinite anti-reverse roller bearing, stainless steel ball bearings, auto-engaging gears, and the HT-100 powered drag system. All features combine to give you sleek beauty, efficient function, and continuing durability.

All Penn reels are polished with a distinctive gleaming gold anodized finish. Every reel in the Penn International series was made with the best materials. Each piece was crafted meticulously and conscientiously examined before being assembled. Penn reels are made to catch the big fish so you can.

Penn International reels and rods can be closely examined at Sea Isle Tackle.

Fly Fishing Accessories – A Few Ideas To Make The Sport More Exciting

Fly fishing is a sport that has emerged over the years and has taken on a form of a science and an art. In addition to the right equipment you must have the proper knowledge if you want to be successful in this sport. You are expected to have the proper outfit that includes all the gear needed for a fly fishing trip. This includes the clothing, foot wear, fishing rod and tackle and most of all the knowledge of he habits of the fish you are angling to catch.

The basic wardrobe of a fly fisherman is the fly fishing vest that contains a lot of pockets that is used for the various tools and tackle an angler needs to catch his trophy fish. A small pocket made out of tanned sheep skin and worn in the front of the vest is a good accessory for keeping those additional flies and hooks. Another good accessory that most fishermen like to keep handy is a spring loaded spool that has a pair of nail clippers hooked at the end. This is handy when you have ot cut the line and either remove the catch or let it go.

The fly fishing vest should also have a big pocket at the back where you can tuck in some light rain gear just in case. A small ring at the back of the collar of the vest will come handy to keep the net out of the way.

Fly Boxes should be wisely chosen. These should be small enough to tuck away in one of the pockets. Ideally a fly box should have 2 to 3 chambers to keep the different flies and tackle. The sections in the fly box keep the wet flies and the dry flies separate. Some small vials are also pretty handy to store the wet flies after a catch.

It is important to keep a spare spool complete with reel just in case the one on the rod gets spoilt. You never know when it will and it is best to have one spare handy instead of abandoning a perfectly good fishing trip.

If you are planning a fly fishing trip into a thickly vegetated area such as a swamp you are best advised to keep some insect repellant as well as some rash cream handy with your kit. Insect bites and allergic rashes are common fishing trips.

Equally important for the fly fishing kit are sun goggles, gloves, a flash light and small pocket knife and don’t forget the first aid kit. Last but not the least is the wading boots. These are usually hip length leather or rubber boots. Care must be taken not to wade deeper than the length of the boots for obvious reasons.

With the right accessories, you can have the fishing experience of a lifetime.
