well if u r fishing a narrow part then treat it like a river if you have to cast far then treat it as surfcasting…after all the weights are there to cast far out to where the fish are nd to keep the bait in place. However if it is narrow, consider using a float, adjust the size to how far you need to cast(a big float needs more weights). as for baits, honestly it doesnt matter too much. crabs tied onto the hook work very well, especially if there are crabs in the water tht wood otherwise eat the bait. well thts all i can tell you from the information you gave me so if you have ne other questions just email me

Greetings! I live in the San Gabriel Valley Area in California (626 area code). My dad took all of my rods, reels, gear, and tackle up to Alaska for salmon fishing so I basically have nothing right now. I am planning a sport fishing trip with one of my high school shot put coaches and I need some fishing gear in order to be able to go. I think I will need two rods, two reels (one for jigging/trolling and the other one for bottom fishing and live bait fishing).
What kind of rods and reels/gear would I need? (Please post some links with pictures and prices)

Please do yourself a favor and go to Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucomonga (which is only a few miles east of the san gabriel valley) I would recommend only reels that can hold (at least) 300 yards of 18 pound test for sure a conventional type maybe even a level wind. A heavy action rod (I prefer freshwater pitching sticks in heavy action and 6 1/2 foot to 7 1/2 foot length for everything but trolling jigs. Perhaps a two speed conventional for that? Spinning gear won’t work very well off shore and plagues most all boat decks with the lack of reel in speed and runners twisting the line is a huge problem as well. Theses offers are constantly changing, which enables one to buy many types of fishing tackle at reduced prices.
It is also important for one to consider the price at which fishing tackle is increasing. Can anyone recommend a good beach in Florida where there is deep-sea fishing?
I’m looking for a place in Florida that has a nice beach, with hotels right on the beach, and one of those deep-sea charter boats where you pay per person and they provide fishing rod and bait, etc. I’m from Florida and looking for a nice place to bring my boyfriend fishing for a 1st anniversary present. Something other than St. Pete area, because we’ve been there before… maybe on the East coast? Also, some place where we can go to nice restaurants at night, and with a pier or something… I know this is quite specific but any advice would help! Thanks!
Daytona Beach is nice, we stayed on Daytona Beach shores, just South of Daytona Beach, our hotel was right on the beach with balconies looking over the water. We stayed at a place called Perry’s Ocean Edge. When we were there we went deep-sea fishing out of Ponce Inlet, only a few minute drive south. WE had good catches of Amberjack, some real nice ones too, we went out with Critter Fleet Charters, they have a website, critterfleet.com, i think, or search for it. They were really nice, supplied bait, tackle, and everything. They had fish cleaning available too. I would recomend both of these places. Check out the websites, i don’t know the website for Perry’s but you can search it.See what you think. There’s also a lot to do around the southern daytona area. There is a few boardwalks, one in downtown daytona and one south of daytona. Also there is a lighthouse in Ponce Inlet, just a few minutes south from Daytona. Lots of nice restaurants, mini-golf courses, lots of stuff to do. check it out.

Where do you find answers when no one knows the answer?
I am trying to get ahold of someone, anyone that works for the neighboring city to give me an answer, but I get the runaround; no one knows even who I WOULD talk to to get it. I want to find out what they do with the old playground equipment when they replace it every few years. That stuff has longer than a 5-10 year life span, and our little town is in desperate need of a decent playground. We will take their hand-me-downs! The obvious place to start was the Parks and Rec dept, but they said call Game Fish and Parks. So I did, and the told me to call P&R. So now who do I ask? Should I just show up at the P&R dept so they can’t blow me off so easily?
Not sure where you live, but I would go through City Hall, City Council has to approve, recommend and vote on any and all purchases, disbursement of funds for the new equipment. Attend a council meeting, ask to be put on the agenda.
Calling on the phone as you have found out often is the biggest run-around there is, seems as if no one knows what the other departments really do.
Is there a Chamber of Commerce in the town?

The nwt number will tell you what type of fish you will be able to catch. Fish that weigh 8 pounds will require at least an 8 nwt rod, etc. The larger the nwt number, the larger fish you can catch.
Some rods are multi-rated (e.g. 7-9 nwt). These rods are good to use because they can accommodate a variety of fish, but multi-rated rods tend to be less flexible than single rated rods.
Rods are made of fiberglass, graphite, or bamboo. Fiberglass rods are durable and less expensive. Fiberglass rods are best for beginning fly fishermen because they can be used in a variety of situations. Graphite rods are lighter and will give you more fighting weight when it comes to landing a fish. Bamboo rods can be expensive, but they are extremely strong and are suited to a more laid-back casting style.
Your fly line will need to match the nwt of your rod. If you have an 8 nwt rod, you’ll need to use an 8 nwt line. It is acceptable to go one or two sizes above or below your rod weight (i.e. 9 nwt or 7 nwt). Buy line that is strong and durable. Some lines are specially designed for freshwater, saltwater, etc.
You will also need to have a durable net that you can carry with you. After the fish has lost its will to fight, a good net is used to scoop them out of the water. This can be a big part of your fly fishing equipment because without a good net, you won’t be able to get your fish out of the water!
Having the right fly fishing equipment is important for both the beginner as well as the experienced angler. As you get better and better at the sport, you will begin to see how important having good equipment can be. You can always upgrade, so it’s good to start out small and work your way up to the more expensive stuff. Walleye Fishing in Lake Eerie – What Locations are Best on the Lake?
Walleye fishing in Lake Erie is good in the spring, summer and fall months. Although 2007 was a slow fishing year for walleye, many anglers are predicting a good year for fishing walleye on Lake Erie. For the months of April and May, you can do some great fishing at night around the tributaries. If you can find an open shoreline, this will be a good place to catch the walleye in early May. You can use 5 Rapala Husky Jerk with a chartreuse color at night. Another color to try is the rainbow trout. If you want a good area for night fishing, try the area by Walnut Creek. Do not use any form of light, it is entirely a dark fishing area.
You will find that in spring months of April and May, the walleye are in the shallow waters of Ohio. They do not move over to the New York side to deeper waters until the water temperature starts getting warm. If you are around the Dunkirk are, you are going to fish very deep for a walleye. The surface temperature of the water is usually around seventy-five plus degrees. That is just to warm for walleye. They move into the depths of the water.
Another good place to fish for walleye in Ohio is the shipping channel of Toledo. The latest activity on the channel should mean that walleye fishing is going to be at its best this year. Trolling these waters will make for some good catches.
The best areas of Lake Erie that have a good walleye population are the central and Western Basins. Every angler will tell you that Lake Erie walleye fishing is the best between April and August. However, these are the prime times for walleye fishing. You can fish all the way through November and still have a good catch.
If last years fishing reports are a guide for this year, the best place to fish walleye this year will be in the Central Basin just east of the Chagrin River. You will be able to fish in waters of about twenty to fifty-two feet of water. Fishing in these waters should be good between May and June. Use a scorpion spoon with a twenty-foot jet diver with a worm harness and leads ranging from fifty to ninety feet. Keep in mind that most of the trophy walleye are caught off a planer board.
In the Western Basin, you can catch your fair share of walleye by Bolles Harbor and Luna Pier. The spawning months will find many walleyes in the Western Basin by the shore and by the reefs. The walleye become more aggressive during the end of May into June and July. Another good area is the Kellys Island area. The water is deep in most areas and the walleye are found in thirty-six to forty-two feet of water.
If you move a few miles north of the island, to Kellys Island Shoal, Middle Passage Reef and Gulf Island Shoal, you will walleye by trolling with a crankbait. Planer boards are usually used in these areas because the water is so clear and the walleye will spook easily because of the boat sighting.

I’m planning a short vacation to sunday lake, near wakefield, michigan this fall(sept). Are there any places within an hours drive where one can fish for steelhead or salmon? If so – what type of equipment an lures are needed?
Would also like to know of some specific locations
Usually they can run that early depending on the weather but usually it’s the end of sept or the first couple weeks into oct. You need rain to get them up into the tributaries. If no rain they will be located off the shore at the mouth of the tribs waiting swimming back and forth. I use a 7 ft light or med light rod with 8lb test. If they are in the lake still throw spoons from shore. Little cleos or KO wobblers in blue/silver, chartreuse/silver or orange/silver. In the tribs i always use mini foo jigs with a combination of black and some other color. Make sure you have several colors because they will change what they want hour to hour at times. I only use mini foos in 1/32 or 1/64 oz. Buy the egg shaped weighted floats so it’s easy to cast the little light mini foos. Tip them with maggots or wax worms, maggots are best, i use 3 on the hook. In the tribs if the water is really stained go to the bottom with berkley power bait in orange or chartreuse with a 1 ft lead from your sinker. Between the spoons, mini foos and powerbait that’s all you need. Oh, if the water in the tribs is crystal clear i would use minnows.

A dry fly imitates a natural insect that is floating on the top of the water. Fish are very sensitive to any motion of their water and how currents move the insects they want for food. The fly may look like something the fish recognizes but it is not acting the same an insect would. The fish recognizes it as something foreign in the water and leaves it alone.

A nymph is the stage between an egg and the adult in the life cycle of an insect. In fly fishing, flies that resemble nymphs are growing popularity. The nymph fly is just below the surface of the water. When a fish bulges the water without breaking the surface, he is nymphing. This means that the fish is eating the natural nymphs just as they are emerging from their shell. This is what a nymph fly imitates.
Streamers and buck tail flies do not imitate any part of the insect’s life cycle. These types of fly fishing flies are much larger and represent small bait fish such as sculpin minnows. The main difference between theses two types of flies is that streamers are tied with feathers, and bucktails are tied completely with hair. Fly fishing that uses these two types of flies generally requires more rod and line manipulation. The movements are supposed to duplicate the motions of the little fish.
Besides these basic five categories of flies, there are many other kinds of flies that are used for fly fishing. Some of them are a combination of one or more of the basic categories and some do not fit into any group. I was in the tackle trade in the early 90′s when the Bitech Viper came out , the idea was good but it was very limited.
About the same time there was a rod pod hit the market made by a company called K.J.B that was an exellent product totally adjustable , but again where have they gone.

Some people who are ardent fisherman, have as their ideal vacation a fishing trip that involves fishing from dawn to almost dusk. The other person may well say that they love to fish. However this may be after a late night of recreation and beverages, sleeping in till 11 am and then “getting ready to go fishing”. Try to pin this down, before even planning the trip. What exactly does the fishing partner mean by a “good day “or “good week “fishing. You might get a good fix on this by previous fishing trips out but not always. Take care.
In the same manner if you have a long drive to your fishing areas what again does the other person or group prefer. Is it one long trip to the fishing resort or is a leisurely drive to sightsee along the way – stopping almost at every shopping mall and fast food restaurant along the route.
In terms of accommodation and accommodations what do the other people or group prefer? A simple rustic fishing lodge in the Canadian wilderness with little in the way of luxuries. Just fishing with the availability of beer and soda. Or does the group insist to be pampered – almost to the point of a four or five star international hotel with essentials and necessities such as gourmet foods, fine liquors, and maid service and of course satellite TV and phones. It is true that there are resorts which cater to this extent – allowing as well for limousine services from your airport arrival to your charter flight. On the other hand in some settings a luxury by some fisherman may be the availability of hot showers. It depends on what the party prefers, wants and what their budgets are. Everyone can be a big sport of cause until it comes time to arrange to figure out their vacation budgets.
In the initial stages of planning for the fishing trip a number of questions will have to be put forward in order for agreements. What type of fish? What time of year is best for those varieties of fish? Will it be walleye fishing, Northern Pike or Bass fishing? Is it a preference of a lot of fish and fishing action – quantity or is a matter of catching “the big ones’ or the trophy fish. Then it’s a matter of quality of fish size rather than quantities of fish caught.
All in all in planning your fishing trips it’s a matter of knowing your fishing buddies or friends ahead of time. Work out a budget to begin with. Agree on a time frame both for the general or specific dates for the event and also for a time span for the trip. Set your budgets as well as preferences – fishing, fish and accommodation styles and preferences.
After that it’s a matter of compromises and having great time fishing.
Remember a day of fishing on the boat or at the fishing lodge or lodges is better than the best day ever at work.

If you’re going to get them gift cards, make SURE that we have the stores/restaurants up here. They sell Olive Garden and Red Lobster gift cards in the stores, but we don’t have any up here.
You could look into fish tackle, if you know what kind of fishing they’re into. Also fishing gear (rarely goes unused in AK). You could also send them some meat and cheese (smoked sausage, provolone, etc.)
Or try some snow gear. If they like snowmobiling, maybe goggles, helmets, or gloves.
Possibly a day-cruise gift certificate, if you could afford it. (They have some rather decent, cheap day cruises in a town called Whittier)
Other than that, Alaskans are just like people in the lower 48, so it doesn’t have to be Alaska specific. I’m sure anything you send will be lovely. =)

Where are the best fishing spots in Texas around the DFW area?
Just like the question says, I want to know where are the best fishing spots in around the DFW area because this summer I’m going to try fishing a lot more. I’m willing to drive for 2 hours to get to the spot and I live in Fort Worth, hopefully that will help you guys. Both Lake Lewisville and Ray Roberts have excellent fishing from both boat and shore. Lake Grapevine is just ok in my experience.
Live or cut shad will do well in both Lewisville and Ray Roberts. There is some very good catfish and striper action below the lewisville damn and I have even caught some black bass there as well. Both lakes have large populations of sand bass with lots of ways to catch them.
