Fishing Lines

Choosing the Right Fly Line

Unlike standard gear fishing where you are casting a weighted lure, with fly fishing you are casting the line. It is the exact opposite, the heavier the fly the harder it is to cast. This is because you are casting the line and any weight or size to the fly will want to slow the line down. Therefore, you can expect to spend what would be considered a lot of money by gear fishermen on fly line, but a good high quality line is definitely worth it. You want a line that will load up you rod and cast a nice tight loop, and be one that you can use for a long time and in many different situations.

There are several different fly lines to choose from.  In fact, there are more than the above average fly fisherman will ever need.  Here we will discuss the most popular types and what they are used for, as well as my pick of brand and model.

Weight Forward

The standard fly line is weight forward line (WF) and will most likely be the one you want. WF line has a taper at the end where it has a larger diameter and heavier weight than the rest of the line that is designed to shoot the line out of the back cast loop and then drop it down lightly at the end of the cast.
There are other types of line, but they are quickly losing ground as WF line is the correct choice for almost any fishing condition.  It is the only style that I use, and aside from people who buy the cheapest line or combo set that comes with no taper, I don’t know anybody that uses anything different.  If you do buy a cheap combo set, the first thing you will want to do is buy a new WF line and get rid of the junk level line (same diameter throughout the line) it came with.

Types of lines: Lines are typically either floating or sinking types with variations of both available.

Floating Line

Fly lines are designed to either float or sink.  The most common method when people think of fly fishing is casting to trout with floating flies designed to look like bugs, which requires floating line.  Same goes for nymph fishing, but a split shot weight or weighted fly is used to get the fly to the fish. WF Floating lines are by far the easiest to cast, so if you are just learning the fundamentals of fly fishing, this is probably what you will start with.

Sinking line

There are many reasons for wanting your line to sink.  Many times the fish are deep and are feeding on bait fish.  In this case you need a line that will deliver some sort of wet fly that imitates what they are feeding on.  This requires a sinking line or floating line with a sink tip.  With new advancements in lines, full sinking line is quickly becoming less and less popular.  Instead people are using WF floating line and then adding certain tips to the line that have different sink rates.

Floating Line with Sink Tips

The most versatile and becoming more the norm are WF Lines that come with a variety of sinking tips that sink at different rates.  This allows a fly fisherman to be able to adapt his or her techniques quickly to adhere to what the fish are doing.  Personally, all my rods have a WF floating lines with interchangeable tips.  I want to be ready for whatever it will take to hook the big fish.  These combination lines are a little bit more expensive than standard lines, but you get several lines that can be applied to different situations in one package.

Another way to fish multiple depths with a WF floating line is to buy a spool of sinking line such as “T 14″ and cut it into different lengths depending on how fast you want it to drop through the water column. This is better suited for advanced fly fisherman as it takes time to know how much sinking line will be the best for certain situations and can sometimes be tougher to cast for the novice.

Backing

Fly Line Backing is usually braided line (gear fishing line) that is placed on the reel before the fly line and serves the purpose of a reserve line for those big, reel smokin’ fish that can’t be stopped.  Typically a person will want 200-300 yards of 20 – 30 lb backing depending on the size of fish they are after.  For most applications with a 7wt or lighter, 20lb will be more than enough.  From 8-12 wt you will be better off with 30 lb.  Anything bigger than that and 40lb would probably be a better bet.  A good rule of thumb is to use at least 10lbs heavier than the heaviest portion of your leader (the monofilament line between the fly line and fly).  That way, if you hook a brute that takes you into your backing and there is a break, the leader will break instead of your backing.  So you will lose the fish, but you will still have your spendy fly line.

Conclusion

As you can see, there is a lot more to picking out a fly  line then just grabbing one off the shelf.   If you want to set yourself up for whatever you may run into, then I  would definitely suggest you go with a Weight Forward Floating Line with  interchangeable tips.  If you are looking  to save some money initially, then you can go with just Weight Forward Floating  Line and then buy sink tips for it in the future.  To get more information on specific  brands and models of lines that I use, please go to my Fly Fishing Gear Guide website  at www.OnlineFlyFishingGuide.com and click on fly lines.  You will also be  able to look though my pages of other fly fishing gear that I recommend. Can fly fishing tippet be substituted with regular fishing line?

I ran out of tippet and i dont want to run out to the store to buy more and i have plenty of regular fishing line.

Sure you can. It won’t unfold as well, so I use it mostly with big bass lures. Keep to tippet for trout fishing 5x and under but for a temporary sub you can certainly get by with regular line.

Sea Fishing

The Value of Good Sea Fishing Tackle Line

The line on your sea fishing tackle is very important. It keeps the fish caught when you catch them. Thus, you have to make sure that your line is good when you go out to fish.

How important do you think the line is on a good sea fishing tackle? Any experienced fisherman will tell you that a good line makes all the difference in the world when you are out there on a boat far off the shore and fishing in saltwater. A line that is just the right strength and weight and is kept in good condition on a sea fishing tackle will help you immensely in making sure that you get the fish you are struggling to catch right into your boat.

Unfortunately, even experienced fishermen can forget just how essential it is to keep the line on his sea fishing tackle in sound and working condition. Just like the rest of your fishing gear, your line gets exposed to extreme weather conditions when you use your gear to go out fishing. When left alone and uncared for, your line can get frayed and brittle. Using a frayed and brittle line on your sea fishing tackle can cause you to lose your catch no matter how hard you have hooked it and even if you almost have it inside your boat.

How can you, as a fisherman, avoid the embarrassment of losing your catch because the line on your sea fishing tackle is in a bad way? The simple response to that question would be to take care of your lines. Make sure that your lines and your reels and your other fishing gear are stored away properly after you return from a fishing trip. Put them away in a place where they could be worn down by the heat or by the cold or be made a sport of by bugs.

Also, before you set your boat out to the sea for a fishing trip, take the time to check on your sea fishing tackle at least a couple of days before the trip. See if your lines are fraying or if they have weakened. You can tell if you have a weak line by just pulling at it. If the line on your reel is weak, pay a visit to your local tackle shop and get yourself a number of new spools to replace your old line.

On your fishing trip itself, just use the appropriate leader and the appropriate lead weight on your line when you make your cast. The strength of the leader you should use depends on the type of fish you are trying to catch. The same goes for the weight of the leader you ought to use. Many fishermen use this rule of thumb: the strength of the leader should be ten times the weight of the lead. So, if you have a 30-pound leader, your lead should be three ounces only.

There is also an advantage to using a slightly lighter sea fishing tackle when you are fishing out at sea. Not only are you being kinder to your fishing line, but you are also presenting a more natural presentation to your intended catch. A light line on a sea fishing tackle will move more naturally in the water, and it will make it more enticing for the fish to bite.

Carp Fishing Equipment
Carp Fishing Equipment

Carp Fishing – Right Equipment For It

It is a misconception of the majority of fishermen that any kind of fishing gear will haul in the carp they wish to catch. However, though thought to be the rubbish of the lake, the carp are devious creatures and not easy to bait at all. In case you are planning on angling for carp, it is wise to spend that little extra amount and get the correct gear for fishing for carp. Though a few people feel that the gear will not make much of a difference, in reality it will and the amount that you will be able to catch with the right equipment is truly much larger than without.

The right gear for carp fishing
Different fishing rods are required for various sizes of carp fish. The carp weigh around 15 pounds in the smaller lakes and up to 30 pounds in the larger lakes. So for you to be able to grapple with a larger fish you would need a stringer and bigger rod. The 15 pound fish will need a one and a half pound to two pound test curve rod and a three pound test curve would be required to handle anything above 15 pounds. The size of the rod also depends on the distance of fishing, as the rod will have to handle both the weight of the carp and the fishing distance.

The reel would also have to be considered according to the kind of rod you are using and also depends on the type of rod and distance that you will be casting. The reel must be well-matched to the rod also. It is better to buy both things together so that you do not mix up the issues. All proficient fishermen advise a bait runner kind of reel. This will prevent you from getting dragged into the lake.

The fishing line is another part that has to be considered carefully. The reel and the rod would give you a hint as to the size of the fishing line you have to get. Once again the line should be able to bring in the carp that you are baiting and this depends on the weight of the fish. A rough guess is the most suitable way to determine this is by the size of your rod.

The hooks are also available in various shapes, sizes, colors etc. Most anglers will put together an assortment of carp fishing gear that has a range of weights, hooks, and tools. Another must do that is advised by expert an angler is that you purchase a carp hook. You may have to spend a little more, but will benefit in the long run. Here you will have to take care that you buy the kind of hook that is permitted by the fishery laws of that county. Barbed hooks are banned in some places and if you do not observe these regulations in the law you could land up in trouble.

what do i need to start carp fishing (list of eqiupment/gear)?

i was hoping someone could make a list of fishing equipment i need to start float carp fishing

Carp Rods
So let’s start with carp rods. The first question is one or two. Well, most carp anglers these days use at least two, three if their waters allow it and they have the gear. Why? Simply because they can. If you told a carp angler they could use five rods then they probably would. Carp angling is very much a waiting game. It involves a lot of patience and being able to cover as large an area of water as possible, and if they can increase the area covered and decrease the waiting time and double the chances of a run, then why not? Remember though, if you are going to buy two carp rods to start off with, then you are going to need two carp reels, two lots of line, two sets of rod rests or a rod pod, and maybe twice as much terminal tackle and bait. Also if you are buying a rod holdall then a bigger one will be needed to accommodate them. So, if you can afford all of this then fine. If you can’t, then why not start with one carp rod and build up to more when funds allow. You must remember as well that if you use three rods, you will need an extra fishing license, as each one only covers two rods.

What type of carp rod? This depends a lot on the venues you are going to fish. If you are fishing small estate lakes and your quarry are carp of up to 15 lbs say, then a fairly light rod of say 1 ½ to 2 lb test curve will be ample. For larger venues where distance casting is required, then maybe a heavier test curve will be required, maybe up to 3 lb. As well as the test curve, the action of the carp rod must be considered. Carp rods come in three types, fast taper tip action, medium tip action and all through action. For close in and short range work, an all through action is best, as it will take all of the power a carp has and distribute it throughout the rod, the more the fish pulls, the more the rod bends. For more distance fishing, a medium action rod is better suited as it will still bend at the tip fairly easily, but has more power as the action transfers towards the handle or butt. For really long distance work, where heavy weights need to be cast a long way then a fast tip action rod is best. This will have plenty of play at the tip, but have the power for casting and playing a fish at range.

Carp Reels
Carp reels will need to be matched to thecarp rod. Depending on the distance you are going to be casting and the line strength and diameter you will be using, you need a reel that can hold the amount of line required. Choice of actual carp reel is very much a personal thing and you need to be comfortable with whatever you choose. I would recommend trying a carp reel on the rod you will be using it with. A good fitting is essential as is good balance. I would certainly try to buy a carp reel of the baitrunner type. If you are going to be using two rods and maybe waiting for a long time for a run, you can’t always watch it the whole time, and a carp needs to be able to pull line free from the reel before you can strike. If it can’t then a big carp can pull the whole rod and reel into the lake; believe me, I have seen it happen more than once! OK, so you could open the bail arm, but try this on a windy day and you will wish you hadn’t. It can also produce disastrous messes on a strike if you forget you have done it. A baitrunner is simply a mechanism whereby a switch is set that allows line to be pulled from the spool under very slight (adjustable) tension whilst the bail arm is still closed. Resetting the switch or commencing reeling both have the effect of stopping line from being pulled through and the reel is then back to its normal state. Therefore, when a carp moves off with your bait, it takes line from the reel, you hear the bite, lift the rod and start reeling and hopefully the fish is on.

Line for carp fishing
Line. This again depends on the type of fishing and on the chosen carp reel. Multiplying the test curve of your carp rod by five is a good rough guide to breaking strains, so a 2 lb test curve carp rod would warrant a 10 lb line. This is only a guide though. Don’t be tempted to go too light, it may produce more runs, but may also cause more lost fish and tackle, a nuisance to you, but maybe discomfort or damage to the fish, a situation that should be avoided at all costs. Different types of line are now becoming available and popular, such as braids, but for the purpose of this article, I will not go into their merits, and standard monofilament lines would be fine for the newcomer.

Hook length
Hook lengths are next on the agenda, and again there is a huge variety available, too many to discuss in this short piece. Suffice to say that there are many types of braids all with their own merits in different situations, and of course you can use monofilament as a hook length. To start with, maybe try buying one braided type and see if you get on with it and whether it catches you fish. You can build up a collection of different types as your skills and knowledge increase. If you

Quality Tip-ups are Necessary for Ice Fishing Success

Fishing on the ice can be pleasant and rewarding with the right equipment. Using the right ice auger, fishing pole, tip-up, line, reel, and wearing the proper clothing is all part of ice fishing success. Let’s face it, if you are not comfortable, you will not enjoy the ice fishing experience. If you don’t have the proper equipment, or good working equipment, you may not have success or very much fun!
The Tip-Up is necessary in my mind because it allows you to fish in numerous spots all at the same time. I start with three holes in the ice and three tip-ups all positioned about 30 to 40 feet or more from each other so you are fishing different areas of the lake at one time rather than sitting at one spot with a fishing pole. I like to sit in one spot jigging with a fishing pole while keeping an eye out for all the tip-ups, so I’m actually fishing 4 spots all at the same time, increasing my chances of catching fish greatly. Be careful not to place the tip-ups to far away from where you are going to be. You need to make sure you are able to get there quick enough when you get a bite.
As far as tip-ups go, use good quality equipment because you don’t want problems out on the ice after going through all the trouble of drilling holes and getting your gear all together not to mention the walk to your favorite spots. I use the Beaver Dam tip-up from the Arctic Fisherman. This tip-up has been around for more than 60 years! Its quality is second to none. I have discovered that fisherman and women who buy a Beaver Dam tip-up are educated about the sport of ice fishing and aware of its quality craftsmanship, traditions, and fish catching ability. Unlike most other tip-ups the Beaver Dam tip-up is totally repairable if something does go wrong with it. Everything is repairable on the Beaver Dam Tip-up. The Arctic Fisherman company, who makes the tip-up re-grease about 1,000 tip-ups per season with a freeze proof lubricant that is still a family secret to this day. This lubricant works better than anything else on the market.
The Beaver Dam tip up is a solid brass, flag-holding, spin-trigger that is tapered on one end to release the flag rod after the lightest of bites, which means you want to make sure you are not to far away so you can set the hook quickly. Plus it also features anti-wind slots for breezy conditions, and to slow down the action for heavier strikes. The spin trigger rod is supported by an aluminum bearing and a seamless steel tube filled with freeze-proof lubricant. The underwater mechanism consists of a snag-proof free running spool topped by a heavy duty solid brass line guide designed to eliminate drag by swinging into the direction of the strike and yet heavy enough to prevent unwinding by the live bait.
This may sound like an endorsement of this product because it is. This is the best quality tip-up on the market and with factory support! Go Ice Fishing and take a child with you. Here is a DNR website that gives you a list of everything you need to go ice fishing.

What do I need to go ice fishing?

I’m a pretty experienced angler, but not with ice fishing. If we ever get some cold weather (it was upper 60s in western PA on Tuesday!!) I plan to go up to Erie or to some local lakes to fish for crappie, blue gills, pike, and walleye. I’ve never gone ice fishing before. Can you list some lures which are good and equipment which is necessary to have with you. average pound line to use, rod companies, jigs, etc.

Thanks

Lymanspond had a good answer. As far as poles and lures go get a jigging rod. It is about three feet long with one or two big guides and a spinning rel. the rod is short because you might be fishing inside a shanty. My favorite ice fishing lure is the Rapala vertical jig. I have caught more fish with them than with tipups or any other lure. A swedish pimple tipped with a piece of earthworm works well for perch. It should be good for crappie and bluegills. Most people I know who fish for pike use tipups and live bait. Hope this helps. Keep things simple and have fun. Jack traps are the best tip ups I have seen. They don’t cost much more than the cheapos.

Alabama Saltwater Fishing – Where and How to Catch Saltwater Fish in Alabama

Do you love saltwater fishing? Do you live in or around the Alabama area and want to try your hand at saltwater fishing? Will you be traveling to Alabama and want to know about the hottest and greatest places for saltwater fishing in Alabama? Alabama is a great place for any angler, from freshwater to saltwater, there are many different bodies of water available for you to consider.

The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division of Alabama is in charge of all the fishing resources in Alabama. They help to manage, protect and conserve the many great freshwater fishing resources within the state. If you’re interested in saltwater fishing, you need to look into the Marine Resources Division who is in charge of the saltwater resources in the state. Whatever type of fishing you prefer, Alabama has many great options for you to explore.

Where and How to Catch Saltwater Fish in Alabama

Now that you know you want to catch saltwater fish in Alabama, you need to learn the real ins-and-outs of the process. Where can you fish? How to fish? What bait is best to use? What state regulations govern saltwater fishing in Alabama? Some fish are best found in deep waters, others prefer shallow shores and some (such as Grouper) require fishing at the bottom of the waters near the ground. The specific tactics and bait used as well as the location of where you set out to fish will all depend on what specific Alabama saltwater fish you’re out to get.

If you want to go saltwater fishing in Alabama, a great place to start is by knowing what type of fish to fish for. There are many different types of Alabama saltwater fish. Here are some examples:

Amberjacks
Blue runner
Bluefish
Alabama waters. In addition to this, you will need several fishing supplies and most likely a boat.

Since most saltwater areas of Alabama are located in and around the gulf coast, you will most likely need a boat to gain access to fishing areas. Depending on the type of fish you want, a boat may be necessary to be able to reach deep enough saltwater for the fish you desire.

Some possible bait types include live bait, cigar minnows, cut bait, artificial lures, squid, shrimp, etc. The type of bait you choose will depend partially on the type of fish you are trying to catch. For example, when fishing for Black Drum fish, try Blue Crab (cut in quarters), hermit crabs and leadhead jigs. Groupers like cut bait on a single hook and fished around the bottom like natural prey.

Surf Fishing Tackle For Bluefish

When a school of bluefish are around you can be sure you are in for an exhilarating time. When this ocean predator is in a feeding frenzy there wont be time to put your rod down. Here are some tips on surf fishing tackle for this popular fish.

Bait Rigs

The bluefish has extremely sharp teeth so regardless of which rig you choose a wire leader is advisable. The best bait rig to use is the fish finder rig. The wire leader length should be around 18 inches between hook and swivel. Put a weight slide on the main line and then tie the main line to the swivel. Bluefish have very good vision so a free lining rig helps the bait look as natural as possible. Bluefish are ferocious feeders and travel in large schools hunting smaller bait fish, so for live baits try menhaden, mullet, eels and shrimp. They will also take most cut fish baits, with mullet being a favorite.

Lures

The majority of surf fishermen prefer to use artificial lures to catch bluefish. There are many lures you can use, popular ones are surface plugs, swimming plugs, jigs and spoons. A fast stop and go retrieval will work the best for these fish, especially when using surface plugs. My personal favorite is a heavy silver spoon which will cast a good distance and retrieve at speed. A good tip is to lace the spoon with a mullet or similar cut fish strip, this will add a strong scent trail as you retrieve. Another alternative is to spray your lure with menhaden bait spray which will have the same effect.

About the Author

The average size of a school fish is around 2 to 5 pounds, and light spinning tackle will give you some great sport. The bluefish has very strong jaws and extremely sharp teeth, so when you do land one take great care when removing the hook, use long nosed pliers at all times. Visit Surf Fishing Tips And Techniques for more surf fishing advise and tips to increase your catch rate.

Keeping Discus Fish & Breeding Discus Fish

The last few years have seen more and more being written about keeping discus fish than most other fish species. Anyone who is thinking about keeping discus fish in their home aquarium should of course get all the information they need before actually buying any of them. They are thought of as royal fish, they are native to the warm and calm Amazon waters that charm through their behavior. Keeping discus fish does require a bit of knowledge on their background, about what to offer to make such pets happy and also what to expect from them. Discus fish are considered fish of changing habits that manifest personality.

When first keeping discus fish you will find that they are shy and very calm in general, but when they start making couples they can often become a little bit aggressive due to breeding territory protection. Keeping discus fish will bring lots of rewards but it will also give you a few challenges as well. First off, as you will see with most groups of any type of fish, within a group it is not uncommon that the weakest discus will get bullied; this is something that can unfortunately result in death. Keeping discus fish in groups in a minimum of six individuals is thought of as ideal. By doing this you will increase the confidence of the group members and you lower the risk of group misbehavior.

When you are keeping discus fish, you will have to respect their habits. For example mating are matters of their own personal choice do not try to force two together. Therefore if you do plan to breed your discus as said you cannot match make and expect them to breed, you will have to let them choose their own partner. When you are keeping discus fish that are about to go through the breeding process it is always best to separate them into a different tank specially prepared for the purpose. If you are keeping discus fish that are about to breed together with the rest of your aquatic pets, you will run the risk of having some violent behavior due to the territorial claims of the breeding pair. Discus fish prepare their area that they are going to use to have their babies by cleaning it first and defending it throughout the whole process.

You will find that discus feed their young by secreting food for them from in between their scales. After about a week the fry will be big enough for you to help with the feeding by giving some baby brine shrimp or even just some flaked food will do. When you are certain that the fry have stopped feeding from the parents it will be safe for you to remove them from the tank into their own. Use a separate tank for the fry feed them well  to support the accelerated growth rate. If everything has been done correctly they should grow well and at around 12 weeks they should have grown to about the 2 inch diameter mark. At that size you will be able to start to sell your baby discus fish.

How do I get my lure deper into the pool for trout fishing?

I’ve been fishing the Madison river for years. I have had fantastic success catching 20-30 fish a day and up to 22″, however i catch nothing out of the deepest pools. My friend and i think it is because we can’t run our lures deep enough, how do we run our lure deeper. Also, any tips for helping set a hook in a big fish, we have lost a lot of big fish because our hook always comes out. Oh, remember it’s a mountain river and the water is running pretty quickly.

Try putting more weight on the line, try standing in a different spot. Wade a little deeper? One thing that helps me is don’t worry about if the lure is coming back. Cast in there and hope for the best. If you are flyfishing try a full sinking line. Are you fishing the park? If you are try looking in “Flyfishers guide to Wyoming” by Ken Retallic. Good luck, catch & release.

Fly Fishing Equipment: What You Need for Success

Fly fisherman have tackle boxes and closets dedicated to their equipment. And while a person can list dozens of ?necessities? for a fishing trip, a fisherman really only needs a few essentials.

Obviously, everyone needs a fly rod if he plans on fly fishing. A good rod will be anywhere from 6 to 10 feet long. New fisherman should note that no other piece of equipment is more important than this rod, so if you have a liberal budget, give this road financial priority.

Ironically, while some will tell you that you cannot fish without a reel, you can. Many a successful fly fisherman has landed a nice fish without the mess of a reel. He just knows how to move his line. A reel does come in handy, though, for those seeking out the larger fish. This is especially important to warm water and saltwater fisherman.

Fly line comes in a variety of strengths but in a standard length. You will usually find it in 90 foot lengths but with weights depending on the pounds you are planning on landing. Fishermen rate their line according to grain, with 7000 grains equaling one pound. You can cast a heavier line farther and obviously land bigger fish, so this works best for those windy days. Lighter line obviously costs less and can work well on calm days when searching for smaller fish. You can even buy line in two styles: level and tapered.

Fishermen searching for Moby Dick utilize backing: an extra line that will give you more than the desired 90 feet of line. Though some might tell you that you really dont need this extra line, one reel will cost you only a few bucks, and it gives fishermen the security of knowing that if they do catch a big fish, they can land him with ease thanks to their extra line.

To affix your fly to your line, you will need a leader: a piece of transparent material that attaches to both elements. The leader will be as short as 6 feet and as long as 15 feet, just depending on what youre looking for. They have ratings based on a variety of things, from the diameter of the line, to the lines breaking point, to different business classifications.

Finally, no one can fly fish without a fly. Flies are basically artificial bait for the fish. Though no fly is alive or ever was, a good fly fisherman tries to either create or pick a fly that looks alive, because no fish wants to eat a dead bug. Flies will range in style from mimicking frogs to shrimp. Creative fly fishermen create their own flies from scratch using felt, wire, and even feathers.

So we can see that really no one needs a big closet for his fly fishing materials. In the end, fly fishing shouldnt take over the whole house but should still make its owner smile.

The Basics Of Print Advertising

Writing an effective print ad, particularly a classified advertisement, requires that you remember five essential points. Failure to implement these points correctly can cost you much in the way of time lost and a sale missed.

You’ve just cleaned out the attic and straightened up the garage. You’ve identified items you no longer need, but they certainly have a cash value to them. You could really use the money, but you don’t want to post the information on eBay. What to do? You create a classified ad!

Unlike in times past, the classified advertisement you run with your local paper will more than likely have exposure beyond the printed copy. Smart newspaper publishers, knowing the inroads that the internet has had on their businesses, now allow advertisers to have a copy of their advertisement appear online. This is important as newspaper readership is dropping rapidly as internet usage continues to climb sharply. Still, a printed copy is smart especially if the classified ad section of your local paper is popular.

When designing your ad, you need to come up with an eye grabbing title. The title you choose will help the reader decide whether they want to read more or continue scanning their eyes toward other ads.

List the item you are offering for sale predominately within the name of the title. If you have several items to sell, consider a catchy title such as, “30 Year Contents of Attic” which will indicate to readers that you probably have antiques. If you state, “Assorted Sporting Goods” you will attract people who are looking for a bowling ball, fishing equipment, children’s toys, etc. The key is attracting the reader and encouraging them to read your ad.

Beyond the title, the following five points will help you in your campaign:

1. Be descriptive The clearer you present what you have to offer for sale, the better your responses will be.

2. Do not abbreviate Not everyone understands what an abbreviation means. Spell it out and erase all doubt!

3. Specify the price Particularly if you are selling just one item, list the amount you want for that item.

4. Highlights I like ads that stand out. If the newspaper offers decorative symbols, characters, or fonts use them to draw the reader’s eyes to your listing.

5. Ad campaign One day listings only work for popular items. Do you believe your item will sell if you list it for just one day? If you list it longer, you can always cancel the ad. Remember to find out what the newspaper’s policy is about online ads too. Your buyer may only see the ad online.

Some newspapers will design the ad for you, if you find writing ad copy to be a difficult task. Not everyone is gifted in writing clear, concise copy. If they want your business, they should be happy to provide this service.

How much of a point rating do you need before you can start selling on ebay?

I have a bunch of fishing equipment that I need to get rid of that I don’t use anymore. It is all quality and I have caught numerous fish with the various rods and reels I have.

There is no minimum, but it’s better if you have some feedback. Maybe you could purchase a few items and build up your feedback first. Plus, I would think the best time to sell fishing equipment would be March or later, when the weather is nicer and people are looking for fishing supplies. Good Luck!

Bass Fishing Equipment:Chasing The Whopper

The sport and art of angling has many different subsidiary styles depending upon which fish you’re fishing for. But few styles of angling can be more fun or as thrilling as bass fishing. Fishing for bass is widely popularized by professional tournaments and speciality television shows, and thus, bass fishing equipment is produced and endorsed the same as Nike or Wilson. It’s the thrill of catching that ten pound bass that makes this style of angling especially fun.

Professional Bass fishing has, over the recent years, become multi-billion dollar industry. Tournaments are held each year, endorsed by every angler or wilderness related company you can think of. Because of this, bass fishing equipment has a range of items that makes the beginning anglers’ head spin. To make things even worse, each company’s line of lures, lines or other equipment say that theirs is the best. How do you know what to look for in a rod, reel, line, and lure? Usually the answer is trial and error, but there are a few key pieces of advice to lend when choosing the right bass fishing equipment for you or your loved one.

Fishing for bass can be, at times, filled with intense moments of excitement, especially when you’re reeling in that huge big mouth bass. To make sure that it doesn’t get away, you’re going to need the right equipment. Bass fishing rods are usually made of composite materials like fiberglass to ensure their flexibility without taking from its sturdiness. Also, the eyeholes that line the rod usually are a bit bigger, allowing for the line to have fewer complications when the wielder reels the game in. Most professional bass anglers use an open-faced reel for it’s smooth reeling and it’s lower rate of line tangle and other complications.

Arguably the most important piece of fishing equipment is the fishing line that you choose. Most fishing lines today consist of a combination of nylon and other composite plastics. Since bass have a tendency to become very heavy fish, it’s important to make sure your line has a test that is at least ten pounds or more. Also, the lure is almost as important as the line. Bass fishing lures come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, but usually replicate a small fish, such as a minnow. Depending upon the size of the lip, the piece of plastic shaped like a spoon at the nose of the lure, the lure can either trill deep or shallow.

There are all sorts of factors that can affect the effectiveness of your angling, it’s best to research products in detail before you buy them. Taking out the trial and error process can save you tons of money on bass fishing equipment, and eliminate the frustration of missing the catch. With the right tools and the right skill, bass fishing can be an addictive sport that can bring years of fulfillment.

Help with buying fishing equipment: speedmaster or beastmaster, ambassadeur or shimano?

I am going to buy reel and fishing pole to catch fish of all sizes, at least up to 60 pounds. I want a pole and reel that’s good for my purpose, and I also want to feel it when the smaller fishes bite. Should I go for Speedmaster Boat 7,6`/20-30lbs or Beastmaster AX Boat 6,6`/20-30lbs? What’s the different of those two?

And should I go for Ambassadeur 7000I Linecounter Meter or is it worth paying a bit more for Shimano TLD 20 or TLD 25? What’s the difference of those?

10 points for best answer

OK with out going to far into this i would go for the speedmaster rod, 20-30lb class and for the reel Abu Garcia, the reason for the first choice is basically i own one, they are good responsive blanks and the guides are very tough, as for the abu reel its due to a few simple reasons, firstly Ive fished both Abu and shimano reels in my life, i prefer the abu, they aren’t as much but they have lost of power behind such a simple reel, the shimanos may have more bearings, but i know that the abu will last you and can take ALLOT of punishment from any fish fish you can throw at it. Ive tried and own both the Abu and Shimano and in my opinion i love the Abu, often shimano can over complicate reels.

Antique Fishing Equipment – Fishing for Treasures

Time is the medium through which we decide the value of items created or possessed. A classic is something that deifies the test of time, only to become a treasure sought after many years later. It’s these old pieces our past that send a spark of nostalgia to a simpler time, and antique fishing equipment is no exception to this. Whether you’re young or old, beginner or professional, acquiring antique fishing equipment can develop into a driving passion.

Antique fishing equipment can include a wide variety of items, not just the rod, reel and tackle. Several collectors delve into all things angling, collecting objects like fishing licenses form the 1930s and before. It is really up to the collector what items he or she wishes to possess, but it is no doubt that there is a myriad of antique fishing equipment out there for anyone who wishes to gather up a little piece of history.

Vintage reels are a common desire amongst collectors and are highly sought after by serious collectors. Before the availability of stronger metal alloys, older reels were made out of a variety of metals including brass, iron and steel. Not only were they made of different kinds of metals then they are now, they were also made in a variety of different styles. Each of these unique designs had their flaws, and thus lost their usability when newer models came out. Even though they aren’t practical, antique reels are both unique and beautiful.

Another article of antique fishing equipment is the bobber used before the conversion to Styrofoam was made standard. Old bobbers were made from a variety of materials, although usually they were made from the same material that is used to close wine bottles. You guessed it, old bobbers were made of cork. Bobbers are not nearly as sought after as antique reels, but still have there own value.

Probably the second most sought after article of antique fishing equipment are the lures that were used before the 1970s. Older vintage lures were created with a bit more flare than they are today. Antique lures sometimes replicated the fish to an almost exact degree. It is for this reason that they are so desirable amongst collectors.

So if your passion is angling and you have a love for the past, collecting antique fishing equipment may be the thing for you. There’s a thousand and more treasures out there waiting for you, all you need is a little desire and an affinity for classics to find all the antiques that stood the test of time.

Beginner salt-water aquarium?

I want to start a small salt water aquarium for my daughter. I am new to the aquarium hobby as I have only had 1 small fresh water aquarium many many years ago. I basically want 2 Ocellaris Clown fish (Nemo) and some cleaner shrimp. I have heard that a FOWLR is much easier than a reef and cheaper as well. My question is what size tank should I start out with for these 2 fish? Should I get a Nano Cube or get a regular tank and the equipment myself? How much will getting a salt water setup for these 2 fish cost? I have been doing some research and I know there is a LOT involoved in getting a salt water tank set up and maintaining it, but I do want to start it up as a hobby along with giving my 2 year old daughter Nemo fish to look at.

i have seen people use nano cubes for a saltwater setup, and they are cute. however, it is only recommended to use a smaller tank in a room that will not fluctuate temperatures that much. saltwater fish require a very stable environment in all aspects, including temperature. this is why it is not wise to begin the hobby with saltwater fish in a small tank. 55 gallon tanks are able to keep a stable temperature better than smaller tanks. so, with that said, you have read what it takes to keep a salt water aquarium, just either make sure the nanocube is placed in a room with consistent temperature or get a larger tank.

good luck!

Is Bass Fishing Equipment Needed

Bass Fishing is not just a leisure sport but does need alot of planning and good equipment for a great experience. While setting out for fishing the main aim is obviously to catch as many fish as possible. For a good catch, it is very important that the proper equipment is used and is in good working condition. There is a whole lot of fishing equipment available that will help you to get a lot of fish in a proper and legal way. However, if you want to make good use of such equipment, you will need to take good care of them.

Here are some basic tips to be remembered, before setting out for bass fishing.

  • Keeping your feet dry: A good pair of waterproof shoes and sealed skin socks that can be worn in any shoe helps in keeping your feet dry even if one has to step down in low water to push off.
  • Keeping your rods tidy: Everybody likes a clean fishing rod. A clean nice looking rod gives a good feeling. Here is a simple tip to keeping your rod clean. Take a very light grade sandpaper and sand the cork handles, you will find out that all the dirt will go away leaving you with a brand new looking fishing rod and will make your rod lasts longer.
  • Organize yourself: Many gadgets like handheld computer and organizers are available to bass anglers, to help store important information such as log conditions, creating your own checklist to avoid forgetting stuff. You can also download maps for your destinations and when you reach home you can easily transfer all the information to your home computer for future purposes.
  • Be prepared for any eventuality: Always carry complete tool kits and spare parts in the boat just in case there is some break down or some failure.
  • Take good care of your battery: Always check if batteries you carry are fully charged, properly connected and in good running condition. Always carry a spare battery for emergency purposes.
  • Be organized: Instead of using a plastic filing box and some hanging folders. Make an article and label them with general bass angling headings and file your articles as you finish them. Keep a mini library of Fishing Magazines and articles for your future reference.
  • Check your boat bearings: Every spring when you get your boat out of storage, always have your bearings of your boat checked. This could save you from a serious accident with your boat.
  • Basic rod advice: The most accurate casting is accomplished when bait casting equipment is cast overhand. Bait casting gear is extremely well suited for “targeted” fishing. On some occasions placing a lure under a boat dock, under overlying limbs or between pontoon boats may be necessary. In this situation skipping a lure is the ideal choice. A spinning outfit is perfect for this chore. Be versatile and be able to use both types of equipment.
  • Take good care of your graphite rods: Impact weakens the stick on the point of impact and may break later. Protect your graphite rods against any impact against a hard object especially during storing rods for travel. Strap your fishing rods tight against the deck, put them in a horizontal holding system in a locker or look for a spot where there is minimum repeated bouncing to avoid damage due to rapping, jerks or hitting against walls. If you have to lay them over your legs while boating.

Before starting to go fishing, make a good plan, prepare your equipment well, and take along only well maintained and properly working equipment. Manage your bass fishing equipment well while fishing. Regularly maintain your equipment even when you are not fishing to make your fishing experience a memorable one.

What should i look for in fishing equipment?

I am just getting into fishing, and my brother and my friends like to fish as well, any suggestions on a rod and reel?

Ugly Stik’s are great to start out with.Go to Walmart and you can grab one for like $25 or so.You don’t really need 20 pound line unless you’re catching huge fish.Since you’re beginning I’m assuming you’ll be going for crappie, bass or panfish.8-10 pound line would do you just fine for that.

Fly Fishing Equipment: Choosing The Right Line

For folks just getting into the relaxing and enjoyable sport of fly fishing, assembling the proper gear can be one of the first exciting challenges to deal with. Depending on the type and size of fish you are going after and the waters you will be fishing, you will have to first select from many options for the various parts of your “kit”. One of the core elements of your fly fishing setup will be your line though, so it is a good place to start. Let’s take a look at your different line options and learn to match them with your needs.

Sinkers Or Floaters?

If you’re just starting out, it’s best to go with a full floating line. This type is commonly used for fishing the smaller sized still waters and river trout fishing. You can save the sinking lines until your skill level is at a point where you’re willing to try larger bodies of water. With a sinking line, you’ll be able to fish a variety of depths. Also, because they are thinner than floating lines, sinkers are also good if you have to fish in very windy conditions, as they cut through the air quite well.

Match The Climate

You’ll also have to base your decision on the overall climate of the region and waters you’ll be fishing. This is because you can also choose between cold weather and warm weather options for your lines. Make certain, especially if you are fishing in extreme climates, to choose the correct one or you’ll find the line does not respond the way you’ll need it to.

Line Weight

Once you’ve figured out the above, you can then move on to one of the easier parts of the process – choosing the correct line weight. Line weights are standardized throughout the fly fishing equipment industry, so once you’ve figured out which weight – often abbreviated “wt” – works in certain situations, you can be confident that the results will be nearly the same across all the major brands.

If you’re into pan fishing and you’re going after smaller fish in small, easy waters such as narrow brooks or streams, starting with the lighter weights is a good way to go. We’re talking here about lines less than four-weight. As you move on to larger and darker waters though and start chasing after a larger catch your line weight should increase too. For example, the five to seven weight lines might be to your liking if you’re after bass or larger trout and you’ll want to go even higher once you start chasing down lunkers like muskie.

As you can see, choosing the right line depends on many factors. If you see yourself facing a variety of different waters and fish on your next fly fishing adventure, it would probably be best to bring an assortment of lines along. Along with the information here, you should be able to find an initial match to use and then further refine your choices as you gain more experience.

Nobody answered my question under the fishing section, so I will try here. I want to buy my husband a fishing trip to Europe. From my research Austria, France, or Poland looks like the best places. If someone was buying you this trip where would you prefer to go? Also, do you know what “classic fishing” is called? All the trips I have seen are for fly fishing, and my husband does not fly fish. His equipment is for the classic type fishing. And, can you tell me what half-board fishing is please?

My boyfriend wants to fish the river ebru? in Spain, meant to be really good!! He does Lake Fishing, i dont know the proper term? But France is good for fishing as well, better than Poland and Austria I would say. Google France and Spain fishing trips and loadsa companies will come up. :)

Carp Fishing Equipment the basics you need to get started

Preparation is key when you are looking to take up carp fishing.  The price of the equipment will vary depending on the carp fishing rodscarp reels  and accessories that you want to purchase.  You can pick up a basic set for around £50-£60 or you can go more upmarket and spend hundreds if not thousands.  For someone just starting out it is advisable to study as many reviews and Fishing Magazines to guage what carp fishing gear is out there.  Again you’ll want to think about the waters that you’re going to be fishing before making any purchases.

Where you decide that you are going to fish is one of the factors that you need to think about before you purchase any carp fishing equipment.  If you are looking to fish thickly weeded areas where you might have to bully a fish to land it  then you need to take a look at a heavier sort of tackle.  If however you are fishing a gravel pit or a large lake free of weed then you can get away with lighter tackle as you can give the fish a lot more slack.

Another great idea is to visit the waters and talk to the anglers that already fish there, by doing this you will probably get a good idea of the kind of tackle that is used.  These people will have no financial interest in the carp fishing equipment for sale in the tackle shops which means you ought to be able to get an unbiased review on what is required for each fishery.
When you have decided what type of tackle you are looking for then it is time to visit the tackle shops.  You should physically visit the tackle shops so you can get an actual feel of different rods and reels.  Once you have got a feel for the rod and reel hold off from making a purchase and begin to shop around.  You will almost certainly manage to get a better deal on the internet and as you will have physically handled the products you are not buying blind.

In addition to a rod and reel there are two other items that you will need to purchase. One of them is a landing net which needs to be at least 42″.  You also need to ensure that it has a fine mesh so that the carp’s fins cannot get caught.  You also must have an unhooking mat as this is a requirement on every fishery which you visit.

What you must not do when buying your carp fishing equipment is try to do things on the cheap. There may be a lot of temptation to buy a basic kit when you are first starting out, but could wind up cursing your luck when that 30 pounder gets away due to your inferior equipment.

what would you take? can u help me and my story writing?

if u were in the water after a horrible ship wreck and could only quickly salvage 3 things from the water out of this list what would they be to take for survival on a dessert island?

items

1) CANVAS SALE
2) SUITCASE CONTAINING CLOTHES
3) HALF A BOTTLE OF POP
4) A CHEST CONTAINING PAPERS PENS A COMPASS AND WRITING EQUIPMENT.
5) A JACKET CONTAINING IN ITS POCKETS A PEN TORCH, MARS BAR,WHISTLE, WALLET WITH MONIE AND I.D CIGARETTES AND A LIGHTER.
6) SHOES WITH VALUABLE LACES MAYBE USEFULLY?
7) PLASTIC BAG
8)ROPE
9)BOTTLE OF RUM
10)FISHING TACKLE BOX

After u decided what u would take can u explain why u salvaged them 3 things? what they would be usefull for for example?

1.) The canvas sail – This could be used to create shelter, as well as a number of other things (such as to be used as a sail if I am able to build a raft of some sort).

5.) The jacket – I would mainly take this for the lighter, for that would certainly come in handy to quickly make a fire (to boil sea water and to possibly make food); also, the Mars bar, the pen torch, the whistle, and the jacket itself could be useful for numerous things.

10.) The fishing tackle box – Any old stick/branch can be turned into a fishing rod, and given that there is fishing line in the box, then fish could be easily caught for food. And I’m sure a number of things in the tackle box (fishing line, lures, etc.) could be used for other purposes.

Best wishes!

Preventive Maintenance on Sea Fishing Tackle is a Must

It is important that you take proper care of your sea fishing tackle. It extends their life, prevents accidents that may result from their damage, and helps you enjoy the sport more.

Part of being a good fisherman is knowing how the proper maintenance of your sea fishing tackle is done. It is very, very important that you know how to take good care of your sea fishing tackle. After all, no matter how good a fisherman you are, your performance in the pursuit of the sport will only be as good as the condition of your fishing gear. The fact is that you cannot expect your fishing gear to be in good condition if you do not take good care of it.

When you fish at sea, you expose your tackle to seawater and the salty sea breeze. The salt from the water and the wind, if left alone, can cling to the plates and the insides of your reel. Eventually, the salt can corrode the metal the reel and the gears inside it are made of. Even if the reel plates are made of carbon composites, which do not get corroded by salt, the screws holding them together and the gears inside may not be made of the same stuff.

That is not all of it. The way you handle your sea fishing tackle also greatly affects its condition. If you drop your rod, it may get cracked or bent at an angle that skews its balance when you hold it. If you spool your line the wrong way, it can get misaligned. If you leave the line spooled in the reel even after you are done fishing, you are inviting corrosion on your reel.

Preventive maintenance of your sea fishing tackle is essential if you want to pursue fishing seriously. Taking good care of your fishing equipment not only extends their life but also enhances your enjoyment of the sport. It can also prevent accidents that may occur from a fishing rod breaking, the level wind on the reel snapping or the line fraying on the rod.

Preventive maintenance of your sea fishing tackle is easy. All you need to do is to wash your fishing rod with warm tap water right after you use it, and then dry it thoroughly before you store it away. Also, take the time to check the insides of the reel to see if there are corroding parts or debris lodged within. Oil the gears with lightweight oil specifically made for fishing reels to keep them in smooth, working order.

Another thing you should look at when checking on your sea fishing tackle are your rod guides. If your rod guides are worn out or cracked, they can cut your line when you are struggling with a big catch. You do not need to be told how disappointing that can get, losing a good catch because of a broken line. You may have to take your rod to a repair shop to get those guides fixed.

Taking proper care of your sea fishing tackle will help a lot in keeping your enjoyment level up as you go fishing out in the sea. Again, your excellence as a fisherman is only as good as the condition of your sea fishing tackle.

Birthday ideas for Dad’s 50th?

I am in the UK and my Dad is in Australia. It is his 50th soon and I am really stuck for ideas as to what I could get him. He likes fishing more than anything but that avenue is exhausted – he has a boat and all the fishing equipment in the world and has been out on deep sea fishing trips a lot. Him and my Mum go away for short breaks a lot on the weekend so I couldn’t do that. Any ideas? Many thanks

4 Great King Salmon Fishing Spots In Oregon

You can fish right through the year at Oregon with remarkable fishing experiences. Though this location is not as popular or well known like the other fishing areas of Alaska, Washington and Michigan of the United States, it offers fishing right through the year which is interesting enough. The most eagerly awaited event in Oregon is the annual King Salmon fishing which occurs annually when many King Salmons are caught. The vast coastline of Oregon which is over a hundred and eighty miles can be fished for king salmons right through. During the season more than 65,000 will be caught and some of these King Salmons can weigh up to thirty pounds or more.

Some of the very often visited hot spots for salmon fishing

1. Rogue River – this river is divided into three sectors like the lower, middle and upper sections and is thought to be a fishing enthusiast’s paradise. Originating from the mountains of Crater Lake National Park, this is a 200 mile long river. The lower end of the Rogue River has exceptional prospects for spring and fall King as well as Silver salmon fishing. The lower end of the Rogue River has marvelous chances for fishing in the spring as well as the fall for King and Silver salmon angling. The water in the middle of the Rogue River is not very rapid and offers wonderful chances for families to go fishing and rafting. Spinner and fly fishing are popular in these deep ponds with rock bottoms and eddies that mark this section of the river. The best months to fish here are between July to October. Salmon and Trout fishing are available in the upper sections of the river. You could also go hiking, camping or white water rafting here.

2. Rogue River Canyon – White water rafting, with the spectacular water movement, is more popular than fishing right through the canyon. However this is a wonderful place to experience and see. There are a few fly fishing chances towards the lower end of the Rogue River Canyon.

3. Oregon coast – Fishing for King Salmon is done in this part of Oregon most often. There are many guide charter services available here, but with the waters being calm one could go fishing without the assistance of a guide. In any case if it is your first visit then it is better that you have a guide. At Bookings Harbor, the locale of the Chetco River is predominantly well known for King fishing in the fall.

4. Gold Beach – It is in this part that the Rogue River flows into the coastal waters . One can fish for King Salmons here right through the year with most opportunities for the best fishing from March to July. King Salmon or Fall Chinook mainly run from August right up to October. Between the fall from the months of September to October you could also fish for Silver salmon.

The coast has the most number of hotels and stores where you could find accommodation or shop for supplies. This is one of the biggest boons at Oregon for Salmon fishing for visitors .There are several camping areas for camping in the day or for longer periods of camping by the coast for those fishing enthusiasts who want to have a feel of the out doors of Oregon too.

What do you think about the Stop of Salmon Fishing today?

Wow, this is something that bothers me as we love salmon and also love to fish for it. What is next?

The salmon spawn is down more than 75% over the past 3 years in the Sacramento River where the majority of the Pacific salmon come from. I belive the commercial fishing has been stopped, the commercial fishermen are in agreement that they have to stop until the salmon population recovers, if it ever does.
I belive you can fish individually for salmon.
