Choosing the Right Fly Fishing Reels

In the past, fly fishing was a technique most often used to catch salmon and trout, but things have changed over the years. Fly fishing is now used to catch a wide range of different fish, including panfish, crap, bonefish, pike, bass, and more! With this type of fishing, you catch fish by using artificial flies that are cast with a special rod and line.

To achieve success with this particular type of fishing, choosing the best fly fishing reel is important. By opting for quality reels, such as Penn reels, you can greatly improve your chances of catching the type of fish you want. Don’t make the mistake of assuming the reel you use is just a simple piece of equipment, it is an item that must work well with your line, leader, and flies for the best results.

Most fly fishing reels are made from aluminum. You must consider your fishing destinations when making your purchase because it will have an impact. For example, salt water fishermen want a reel with anodized polish to prevent the effects of salt from causing damage.

As previously stated, never assume that your reel is just a single piece of equipment you need to buy. It must be matched up with line weight and rod for the best casting possible. For example, a five-weight rod must be matched with a five-weight reel.

Another mistake is not considering the different types of reels available. You want to familiarize yourself with these differences.

For example:

  • Single Action Reels: These are the most popular and most used; they are ideal for novice fishermen. With this reel, the fly is positioned on a spool and the handle connects to the spool instead of a gear system. With one single crank of the handle, you get one spool revolution.
  • Multiplier Reels: Unlike single-action reels, they fasten to the gear system and this means multiple spool revolutions with one single crank. The greatest benefit of opting for this type of reel, like Penn reels, is the quick line retrieval.
  • Automatic Reels: While lots of fishermen have claimed that an automatic reel takes away from the sport and the challenge, its increase in popularity due to ease of use. It allows for you to just flick a lever to recover the line.

One of the best ways to find out what type of fishing reel is best for you, is to talk to other fishermen. Make sure the fishermen you ask for opinions fish in the same type of environment as you, and have a similar price range or budget for their fishing equipment.

We have seen that sales of Penn reels are particularly strong, and reading reviews of Penn reels by other fisherman will show you that they are prized for their durability.

Best Fishing Reel, Penn, Shimano, Daiwa or ?

This question is probably more of a poll on your opinion.
I am based in the Pacific Islands and we can get some sinister fish hook ups.
I use Shimano equipment for Landbased Game Fishing and Penn for My Offshore Sport Fishing.

Some people say just pick one or the other!

I’m quite fond of the Penn HT100 Drag System. I think it is vastly superior in stopping power and life to the Shimano.

What are your findings?

From your description of where you are fishing the is nothing that can beat a Penn reel. If I was going to be fishing in an out of the way place the two reels I would want is a Jigmaster 500, and 113H 4/0. They are simple, easy to fix in the field, and parts for these reels if needed can be found almost anywhere. These two reels were the most in demand from foreign tourist that I came into contact with when I was in the retail tackle business.

I agree with your feelings about the HT 100 Drag System. They last and don’t fade under pressure and heat.

Fly Fishing for Trout – Casting or Hunting

Fly casting is a skill that most fly fishermen would probably consider the most integral skill of fly fishing for trout. Certainly it is the most recognizable trait of fly fishing.

BUT, if catching fish is as important to you as a great looking cast is, then you may actually need to be careful just how much casting you do.

Fly fishing has far more in common with hunting than it does with other forms of fishing. This is because trout are such a timid creature and are so easily spooked. Although it is not such an issue if you are fishing deep in large bodies of water or in wide, fast flowing streams, it is still for this reason that casting can also be your worst enemy when trout fishing.

The classical ‘Long cast’, although a beautiful thing to behold, and even more beautiful to perform, does have it’s limitations. It was designed to deliver a lure to a timid quarry, who would be spooked by splashing sinkers or floats or any of the traditional fishing equipment and tackle generally used for other, less discerning species. The whole concept of doing this with a whip-like rod and line was indeed an ingenious one.

Trout, and particularly Brown Trout, see everything. And the bigger the trout, the more they see. The fly fisherman standing plain view false casting is an obvious predatory threat and will cause a fish to disappear into the depths, without you even knowing the trout was ever there.

To catch good, wild trout in smallish or still waters you must become an ambush predator and learn to think like a hunter. This, the element of surprise, is one of your greatest skills when fly fishing for trout. Believe it or not, even above good casting skills.

Dressing to be reasonably well camouflaged, keeping low and not making any fast or large movements, all play a role in not alerting a potential target trout to your presence. Even making sure you don’t step heavily on the ground as you approach the fishing spot, keeps your footsteps from resonating through the water. Sound travels very well under water, particularly for a creature who has receptacles designed to hear within an aquatic environment.

Without a doubt, you will have to cast, and the better practised you are at casting with a fly rod, the less movement you must make to get your fly into the position you want it. So there is a good argument for spending time casting, just for casting sake. This is best done in an open place, preferably over water if you have the luxury, like a dam or lake, but anywhere that you are not going to catch any unwanted items will do to improve your skills.

If you want to be successful, don’t just trudge up to the waters edge and start casting out into the middle of the lake or stream. The bulk of the aquatic life that the trout source as their food items are usually located towards the edges of the water, and near to the aquatic plant life also.

With this in mind, the trout will more likely be keeping as far out of reach of their own predators as possible, while maintaining a presence (cruising in still waters, on station in faster waters) close to their preferred food source. Larger fish preferring deeper water for security, and structures or irregularities for potential dietary supplies.

And If Possible Have Bait & Equipment For Fly Fishing And Regular Rod & Reel Fishing…. I Am Originally From Bladen County, North Carolina So Im Not Familiar With Fishing Here In Montana.
…na Id rather find out myself by trying different baits and lures
lol thanks dude, yea i caught the hell outa trout last summer when i first got here, but yea this tackle will be used all over the us tho, im pretty sure ill have to put my own box together tho

Montana is well known as a Trout fishing hot spot. You will definitely want to include (or purchase) some Fly’s and possibly an inexpensive Fly outfit.

The only place I know where you can buy bulk fishing items in a tackle box “ready to go” is either at a garage sale/auction, craigslist, or EBay.

The problem?

You will very rarely find a “kit” that perfectly fits exactly where & what you want to fish for.

Your best bet is to put together a tackle box yourself. Here’s a basic list of equipment for Montana:

1. Here’s a small kit that will get you started but you will need to add extra weights, bobbers, a knife, and some basic lures- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20176-cat601341&id=0063821320868a&navCount=12&podId=0063821&parentId=cat601341&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IK&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat601233&hasJS=true

Fishing On River Teith, Scotland.

This year we had the pleasure of fishing for sea trout, trout and Salmon in callander in Scotland on the river Teith.

The water quality and clarity is excellent, the area beside the car park in callander town centre provides excellent wading. The wading is easy going, with a smooth sandy bottom to the river.

Fly Fishing

Brown Trout Fishing

All though most angles visit this river for it’s runs of salmon and sea trout the growing brown trout population is often overlooked. We had a number of small brown trout on the dry fly and one or two on small nympths.

Equipment

9ft 6-7 Fly Rod on Dry fly Line

Sea Trout

This perhaps my favourite type of fishing, in the dark, up to your waste in water. We found that on this water you need a decent downpour of rain to get any kind of run of sea trout.

The pools, at the meetings and just at the bridge is where we found most of our action, casting our fly just below the tree’s on the far bank. We lost (I know terrible but it happens to us all) two or three decent fish and landed one 4lb fresh run sea trout.

Equipment

We were using 10ft 8wt single hander Airflow sls fly rods, these provided excellent casting and bite detection

Salmon

We had little luck on the fly with the salmon but did not anglers with two handed fly rods and heavy brass tube flies seamed to have more luck. In desperation we switched to spinning tactics using Flying C’s we landed two 10lb salmon that were rather coloured.

Upon speaking to the Balif we discovered that this is the norm for this venue. However it was good sport.

Equipment
10ft Spinning rod, Braid Line and Flying C’s

Our Opinion

The venue is relatively cheap for salmon fishing, everyone is happy to help the more novice angler. Wading is easy and safe. Good choice of sport from trout fishing to salmon fishing. We would give this venue 4/5

Can anybody tell me what type of camera takes this type of photo? (link inside)?

http://i36.tinypic.com/2i0qkix.jpg

I’ve always wondered what type of equipment was necessary in order to take a picture that had such a grainy, vintage look to it (i really admire the fish eye too). If you don’t know exactly what type of camera was used in order to take the picture above but have an idea to what it could be or maybe any similar products, I would appreciate it if you could list some of them off (along with the pricing if it’s not too much to ask). Thanks!

If you look carefully at the picture you will see it looks more like a shot of a security mirror rather than a fisheye lens. So could have been taken with anything but I would guess a cheap p&s.

Fly Fishing Rod- Reel In The Right One

It is apparent that fly fishing differs from the regular fishing methods in various ways. Such significant distinctions help in making fly fishing rod to be an obvious fly fishing piece to purchase.

The conventional fishing would use a rod that is equipped with transparent, monofilament and a nearly weightless line for casting a weighted hook within the water. Making use of a weighted and translucent line casting a weightless hook in the water is essentially reversed in Fly fishing. The actions of fly fishing rods are required for being able to cast the fly.

The act of fly fishing is different from conventional fishing in a way that the fly fisherman never puts his rod down. These fishermen cast the whole time they are actually fishing. Such activity makes the decision for buying the perfect rod to very essential. Anglers who fly fish would spend their whole fishing day making casts and having the rod in their hand.

The method of getting in a fish, again, is different in fly fishing. The fishing reel seems to be very important when traditional fishing is concerned. However, it is not quite important for fly fishing. In this type of fishing, the fishermen use a method of stripping the line by hand. Fly fishing reel is commonly used for spare line, like a storage compartment.

The idea about buying the fly fishing rod is indeed a vital decision that would make an impact on the enjoyment you would get from the sport. Most of the modern rods of fly fishing are made from types of graphite compound. However, there are some bamboos rods also designed but are quite expensive when compared to graphite rods. There are, however several alternatives of graphite rods for fly fishing available.

The fly fishing rods are often categorized by weight. A 6-weight rod is also written as 6wt, for instance. Weights of the fly fishing rod you buy would be decided by the place you are intending to fish. Hence, it is significant to use line which goes fine with the weight of the fly fishing rod while you fish. Few rods are developed to be multi-weight fishing rods and could be safely used with various other weights of line.

A general rule while shopping for any fly fishing rod is purchasing an expensive rod that you could afford. The advice is bases itself on the comprehension that the fly fishing rod is one of the most vital Fly Fishing Equipment of the fly fishing outfit. One could always upgrade the reel sometime later if decided for acquiring a better reel.

An all time good idea is to visit several shops which sell fly fishing gear prior to making the final choice. Even if one plans the purchase of their fly fishing rod over the internet shop, it would be quite good to essentially handle several other rods before concluding on the final decision. Ensure to remember that while the fly fishermen tend to be bunch of opinionated people, fly fishing rods often are personal choices. If any rod does not find it comfortable within your hands it hardly matters which expert recommends that rod. The choice would also be greatly influenced by the place you intend fishing. For instance, the smaller mountain streams in New England would require a much lighter rod compared to great rivers in Rocky Mountains of Utah.

Should I disinfect my tank supplies or is letting them dry enough?

I have 8 fancy goldfish, as well as 80 gallons worth of tanks and equipment that I am taking down because I am at school in VA and I am driving home tomorrow. I know quite a bit about goldfish, I’ve been keeping them for about 3 years now, but I still have so much to learn! I am going to be putting the tanks and equipment (heater, aerator, etc.) in storage here in VA and will then set them up in the fall when I return from FL. Is just letting the equipment dry good enough or should I disinfect it? The thing I always have hated about coming back to the equipment after 3 months is that it smells awful, because all I really did was rinse it and get rid of the visible stuff by scrubbing. I know you can use salt but i’m not sure how or what else you could use that wouldn’t be toxic to the fish. Any help would be appreciated!

Rinsing well and allowing it to dry well before packing it up will be just fine. Nothing harmful or toxic will be in it if it dries well before the long term storage.

Have a safe trip home.

Whether you are at home or at your fishing cabin, you should take some thought to organizing your fishing gear so that it is clean, in good repair, and ready to use the next time you head out. This can save a lot of time and money that could be better spent on fishing.

At home, you should have a permanent place for your fishing gear for long-term storage. Fishing rods should go into racks where they are kept off the floor and away from children and pets. Tackle should be organized in a big tackle box. Waders (clean and dry) should be hung or kept in a storage tub.

If you have never organized your fishing gear, you may have to spend a significant amount of time restoring some of it into proper shape for use. You may want to tackle (ha ha) it in sections – focus on your rods and reels separately from your tackle.

Your rods and reels should be clean and serviceable. You can clean cork handles with mild soap and a scrub brush. WD-40 and an old toothbrush can help with reels. You should check your line and, if at all worn or frayed, cut off enough that you won’t worry about it snapping the next time someone uses it.

Make or purchase a rack to stand your fishing rods in. This will eliminate damage caused by leaning against the wall or being accidentally stepped on and will also keep your rods away from children and pets.

Fishing lures and bait are probably going to be your worst enemy if you’ve not organized them sometime in the last decade. However, going through it will end up paying dividends the next time you just want to grab a tackle box and GO.

The first thing is to gather all of your tackle that you can find into one place. Separate the plastic from the metal, surface from spoon from spinner, etc. Organizing by color also works for some. Basically, you can organize your lures however best suits you. As you separate each lure, make sure that it is clean and not rusty before you assign it to a pile.

You can use freezer bags to organize soft baits, but for fishing lures, hard tackle boxes are best. There are many varieties on the market. If you fish for many different species, you might find that a ‘main’ tackle box for all of your equipment and a ‘grab and go’ tackle box will suit your diverse fishing needs.

Label all of your tackle, so you don’t have to stop and think about replacing equipment in your new system. Tape or glue labels to the compartments of your hard tackle boxes and get a permanent marker for your freezer bags.

Tackle is best stored in a cool/dry situation rather than the variable temperatures and humidity of a boat or shed. Store in a room or basement.

Organizing your gear may take a long time and some effort. However, when you pack your bags for your next trip to the cabin, you’ll be glad that you did. With a little time put in, you’ll be able to grab your rod and tackle and just go for that next big catch!

How do i become a better d-lineman?

I’m a freshman nose tackle.I;m 5’11 195 pounds.I wanna know how to get faster stronger and better. So any drills that will help. And i have 250 dollars and christmas coming up and im looking to spend all of that money to buy equipment to help me train so what should i buy

Stick to your basics! I have coached for four years now and that is the number one thing you can do. Keep low, stay in shape, lift weights as often as possible and eat healthy. If you think you want or need more than that then start cutting time on your runs. It might sound basic but trust me… you’ll get it in time. Also, try to learn how to read offensive blocks; what I mean is learn how to recognize who is going to block you before the ball is snapped. That will help you realize (1) where the ball is going (2) how to get to the ball carrier/quarterback and (3) help your team because then you will not have to blitz as many people to create pressure and that allows more coverage men. Hope that helps. Email me (wrestlingdrewcross@yahoo.com)if it does

Finding Saltwater Fishing Gear

For anglers lucky enough to live close to the coast, getting out on the saltwater and hooking a big one—whether going after bonefish, redfish, snapper, or ocean bass—is one of the best thrills possible. But, as many women have pointed out, fishing can be the male equivalent of scrapbooking: you’ll pay as much time and money looking for “just the proper” lures, hooks, rod, reel, or you-name-it as you can spend time actually putting the line in the water! Admittedly, the explore for the elusive “perfect setup” may be a very real part of the pleasure of fishing, however why spend oodles of effort and time trolling the aisles at your local retailers for saltwater fishing gear when you could be trolling the estuaries and lagoons, or surf-casting for jack or roosterfish?

What Do I Require?

If you’re a real saltwater novice, you need to grasp that saltwater fishing gear is generally heavier than freshwater equipment and is additionally made of materials that resist the corrosion so prevalent in environments that mix moist air and high saline content. Even saltwater fly fishing gear is heavier than the tackle favored by the guys angling for rainbows in those high mountain streams. Also, rods differ depending on the kind of saltwater fishing: surfcasting rods are totally different than a boat rod you’d use to bottom fish from a pontoon or pier; Deepwater trolling rods are vastly different than saltwater flyfishing rods. And, as with any alternative kind of fishing, you need to choose your line based on what you’re going after: for ladyfish and other smaller inshore species, you do not need twenty-pound test line! In fact, if you know what you’re doing, you’ll be able to catch more fish on smaller line.

Take Care of Your Stuff

As implied by its need for corrosion resistance, your saltwater fishing gear ought to be regularly cleaned and maintained for maximum life and minimum down time. Every time you employ your saltwater fishing gear, you must straight away clean everything with soapy water and a soft brush—nothing else will take away dried salt. Clean all the eyes on the rod, and hang everything vertically to dry. Use sparing amounts of a good quality reel lubricant to keep the reel in top operating condition and to extend its life. But watch out not to use an excessive amount of lubricant-fish hate the scent of oil!

Spend Your Money Wisely

Usually, spending the most cash on a rod does not invariably ensure getting the best deal. With reels, on the other hand, the higher investment will pay real dividends, since more costly reels typically are created with real bearings instead of plastic shims. Bearings will last longer and offer smoother operation throughout the lifetime of the equipment, while the less expensively created reels will begin to wear and drag sooner.

Fishing in Cornwall, any tips for a beginner?

I am going fishing in Cornwall in September but I am a complete novice to this. Can anyone tell me what equipment I shall need, I believe it will involve surf and boat fishing and that gear will not be provided. Also someone gave me a Daiwa long cast reel, any ideas whether this is any good and whether it will be any use to me on my trip? I will obviously have to get a matching rod. Many thanks.

Go to a tackel shop and ask. Beware of them giving you name brands though, because they might be more expensive. If you don’t plan to do it often, ask if they rent gear. Practice tieing knots, because chances are you will have to do it quick and often.

What’s the very best Rod&Reel Combos for Northern Pike Fishing ?

please describe you’re fishing equipment in exact detail thank you very much ; Elvis has left the building ; lol

A light/medium rod, somewhere between 6’6 and 7’6 with modest sized reel with 8 to 12 pound line on it. Just cause Northern Pike like to play with their food, so I prefer sensitivity to strength.

I like a dark green line Berkley Trilene XL.

For the rod, can’t go wrong with the Shakespeare ugly stick for either spinning. I think on of their catfish rods would suit best, just for the added strength.

The reel, I’d recommend a Daiwai if you could afford it, if not, a Shakespeare will get you through the season.

Make Big Bucks With Commercial Fishing Equipment

Fishing is not only a hobby and manner by which to put dinner on the table it is also big business. There are many workers that spend their days with commercial fishing equipment in one hand and a hefty reward in the other. Commercial fishing is about a 16 million-dollar venture annually. Not only do grocers demand seafood so do restaurants, sportsmen and jewelers. All of these people have one thing in common, to make a buck. These fishing companies must ensure that they have the best commercial fishing equipment on the market.

As with any other type of equipment the more it is used the faster it wears and breaks down. Commercial fishing equipment is no different. The rigorous activities of daily catches of thousands of pounds, it has to be good. Not only is it cost effective to ensure the equipment is of commercial grade it is also a safety factor for the shrimpers, fishermen and other laborers. The boat should be stocked with commercial fishing equipment such as rods, reels, lures, fishing lines and heavy-duty landing nets.

In most cases the commercial fishing equipment is used in deep-Sea Fishing. With the larger fish and other marine life it is imperative that the equipment be rated for heavier fish. Not only do they weigh more they also put up a much bigger fight than a catfish! The better the equipment the less the fisherman will struggle with bringing the catch on board. Safety is the number one priority of most companies and this is the reason that many times the commercial life jackets are always a part of the commercial fishing equipment. The life jacket will keep the fisherman in the boat and also keep him/her from straining their back. Reeling marine life in is not always the easiest thing to do.

Commercial grade basically signifies that it has been built to accept the strains and pressures of a daily workload. A regular monthly fishing line certainly would not hold up to the test of catching thousands per week. It is important that those making a living or even sporting for bigger catches ensure they have heavy-duty equipment. That will keep them from getting hurt and make the job much easier.

Component parts also make up the commercial fishing equipment. In order to complete the job bringing in the big orders it is important to have all the necessary parts and pieces. Component parts are items such as dories, gurdies, nets and bait tables. These are the tools of the trade and absolute musts for every commercial fisherman; whether they are bringing in seafood for dinner, sport or the local grocer.

What type of equipment will I need for keeping several fish in a dorm room?

Hello! I’ll be going off to college at the end of August, and unfortunately I can’t bring any of my beloved furry critters with me. Since aquarium fish are the only pets allowed on campus I am interesting in getting one betta and a small group of corydoras (about six) to keep him company. What is the minimum size tank I would need to get, and what about filters, heaters, plants (live vs plastic?) and gravel vs marbles? Is there any benefit to getting a round tank instead of a square one? I know both are easy fish to keep, but are there any special things I should know before purchasing them?
I am a beginning fish owner and any guidance would be appreciated!

Those are some great questions! I would suggest a ten gallon aquarium with a tight fitting hood (bettas are quite accomplished jumpers). I would also suggest a small air pump and a sponge filter. As far as gravel is concerned, I like to use really smooth river stones and rounded natural colored gravel (none of the neon colored sharp stones that are available) for corrys because they might hurt themselves on sharp rocks as they endlessly scour the bottom of the aquarium. A heater should be installed and the temperature set for 78 degrees fahrenheit which means you should have a thermometer so you can monitor the waters temperature. Also, never use straight tap water in your aquarium. I like to use reverse osmosis de-ionized water from the grocery store because I have municipal water that contains chemicals like chlorine, chloramine, flourine and some heavy metals that are certainly detrimental to good fish health. If you are going to use tap water, pleas buy a good dechlorinator from your local pet store and follow the directions carefully. You will also want to add your fish very slowly to start to cycle your aquarium. Here is a good link for more information on how to cycle your aquarium. http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php
Good quality food is a must. You will need two types. A floating pellet type for your betta (I reccomend Hikari Betta Bio Gold or HBH Betta Bites, but never flakes) and a sinking wafer for your corrys (I like Hikari sinking veggie wafers or algae wafers). Change ten percent of your aquariums water weekly and you should have a happy carefree aquarium! As far as plants are concerned, live plants are always a good choice as they help to keep chemicals out of your fish’s water. The easiest approach is to buy “betta bulbs” which are a plant bulb (usually Aponogeton species) at petco or even wal-mart. They are inexpensive and they will grow even in low light conditions. Here is a good article about basic betta care that will help you with the do’s and don’ts of Betta care. http://www.bettatalk.com/basic_care.htm The article is written by an award winning fellow betta breeder and will dispell many of the myths that you will read about betta care like… they don’t need a filter or a large aquarium or males and females live happily together like the brady bunch….phoey! Please consider all the facts before you purchase your new friend and you will have a companion for all of your college years!

Can someone tell me how to make fishing boats and offshore platforms in Civilizaiton IV?

How do you get the damn work boates to do anything? I have tried F ket and O key but they dont sem to work

First, you need a resource for the work boat to work, either Fish, Clams, Crabs, Whales, or Oil. Fish, Clams, and Crabs additionally need Fishing to be worked; Whales need Optics; and Oil requires Plastics. Then you simply send the work boat to the square with the resource and click the button that makes it improve the resource. Lastly, the resource needs to be within your cultural borders. Very simple. I don’t see why you’d bother with hot-keys, this a turn-based game, kick back, relax, you have all the time in the world.

Fishing Baits
Fishing Baits

What is Fishing Bait?

There is such an assortment of bait that it is difficult to recommend any particular color, size, or type as the best. There are more than a thousand good baits on the market. All will catch fish at some time or another.

Fishing baits usually weigh from ¼ to an ounce to three ounces. The most popular weight preferred by the majority of bait casters is the 5/8-ounce bait, while the average is between ½ and 3 quarters of an ounce. Baits can either be used as a whole or cut into chunks. Anglers can also use dead or live baits.

The Different Types of Bait

There is a wide array of organisms being used as fishing baits. Among the different types used in fishing, the commonly used are the small fishes. These consist of widely used fishing baits such as herring, anchovies, menhaden, and some others that are inborn to certain local waters. Larger fishes are usually used as chunk baits.

Fishing baits can be used whole, chunk, and strips, based on the activities of the type of fishes being chased. The size of the fishing bait is usually well matched with the size of the fish being hunted.  Other common organisms used for bait fishing are crabs, worms, shrimps, crabs, clams, sand fleas, eels, and squid. Among all of the organisms mentioned, the crabs and the shrimps are the well-liked organisms to be used as fishing baits.

Shrimp are favorably used as fishing bait and are considered to be very valuable bait for a huge number of saltwater fish, especially those that are considered “inshore fish” like redfish, speckled trout, shook, and a lot more.

Whereas, various crab species, especially the fiddler crab, sand flea, and the blue crab, are perfect fishing baits for many varieties of “inshore fishes” and “bottom fish.” These crabs are usually clasped through their shell, usually on either the right or left of the head.

How to Acquire Fishing Bait?

Fishermen can acquire fishing bait either buying them in bait shops or simply by capturing it themselves.

The advantage of buying fishing bait is convenience, while catching live fishing bait is less expensive and can be more effective in luring fish.  Digging for earthworms is another activity.  Earthworms make an excellent bait.

Indeed, when it comes to bait fishing, using the proper fishing bait are important and imperative to the success of fishing. Hence, anglers should know the basics of choosing fishing baits in order to save time and money.

Salt Water Fly Fishing Equipment
Salt Water Fly Fishing Equipment

Saltwater Fly Fishing

Saltwater Fly Fishing uses heavier Fly Fishing gear than with freshwater Fly Fishing. Saltwater fish are much larger and have more room to fight than many freshwater species.

An angler will have to use wet flies that resemble smaller baitfish; however, saltwater poppers can be used as well. Surface flies that are similar to freshwater bass fly fishing can be used as well, although they are larger and blue in color.

Saltwater Fly Fishing species that can be caught include striped bass, marlin, salmon, bonefish, tuna, tarpon, and sailfish.

The secret to Saltwater Water Fly Fishing is that the angler should fish for the larger fish by using small baitfish; this teases the fish to come closer to the boat.

The saltwater fly reel is manufactured with corrosion resistant parts, and must have a more powerful drag than freshwater fly reels.

Corrosion proof equipment is essential for all saltwater fishing not just fly fishing. Many people saltwater fish from the shore line wading for strikes, or hits from bonefish or striped bass as well as drum and other types of fish.

However, trout anglers may need to practice new skills in order to catch fish on a fly rod. Since saltwater fish are so much larger than freshwater fish, the angler will need at least an 8-weight fly rod; and they should be able to accurately cast between 30 and 90 feet, so this may take some practice on the angler’s part.

As stated above, the equipment that is used in salt water has to be corrosion resistant, and hooks for Saltwater Flies is no exception. Although most hooks for saltwater is made from stainless steel, the best saltwater hooks are the type made from high carbon steel. Smaller hooks such as #8 to #10 are great for fish close to the shore; however, for offshore species the hooks should be size #3/0 to #5/0.

A good saltwater fly rod would be around 9 feet long and weights from 3 to 5 ounces; however, the type of rod and the line that is used will depend mostly on the local conditions of the area the angler is fishing.

A good idea is for the angler to press the line against the rod handle with their index finger and use their free arm to pull the line from the reel or from the water.

Once a fish strikes, the angler can then pinch the line tighter with their index finger while they lift the rod tip to set the hook.

Following these few tips should get the angler prepared for the next Saltwater Fly Fishing trip, and help them catch some very nice fish. Talking with the local salt-water residents may also help with the advice they have to offer.

What kind of fishing gear should I buy for fishing in the Texas Gulf Coast?

I need brand names, and specs on what kind of equipment to get for fishing in the surf in the Texas Gulf Coast. Namely, rod, reel, line weight, weights, etc…the basics for someone with no equip!!!

I don’t have to have top of the line equipment, but I would like to invest in reasonably priced, good equipment that will last. I am aiming to catch red fish, SW trout, pompano, and other medium sized fish out of the surf.

Here’s a basic kit for Gulf Coast Surf fishing, ( please read all reviews):

1. Spinning Reel- Penn 650 SSM- This is a reel that could last a life-time if properly cared for- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_72135_151001002_151000000_151001000_151-1-2

2. Spinning rod- Ugly Stik 10 FT MH- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_19912____SearchResults

3. Line- Berkley Big Game 15LB- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15127____SearchResults

4. Weights & Sinkers- A basic Pyramid sinker works well for most Surf Fishing. You would need 2-3 between sizes 1OZ to 5OZ- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_22434____SearchResults

5. Sinker Slides- This device helps you connect your sinker to your line- http://www.cabelas.com/p-0017984316709a.shtml

6. Gamakatsu circle Hooks in various sizes 1/0 – 3/0 – Don’t get “stingy” when purchasing your hooks OR line; they are what connect you to the fish- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_19936____SearchResults

7. 16LB Fluorocarbon Leader material- This is a “must have” in my book. Due to “fishing pressure” most productive fishermen use Fluro due to it’s “invisible” and “abrasion resistance” qualities- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_2289_151011004_151000000_151011000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT

8. Weighted Popping Corks- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_89330____SearchResults

You will also need a “Sand Spike” (you can purchase one or make one yourself using a piece of heavy-walled PVC pipe). A knife for cutting “cut-bait”. 3-5 regular Slip-bobbers. A folding chair and a tackle box.

You should also purchase some Berkley Gulp Saltwater Shrimp and Jerkshads. Rig these on 1/2-3/4 OZ Jigs.

I think that’s about all you need. Try to stay away from “X-mas tree” rigs with 2-3 hooks. They CAN work, but mostly attract Hard Headed Catfish and basic “trash fish”. It’s always a good idea to make your own rigs using a SINGLE hook, (esp with Live Shrimp or Finger Mullet).

This outfit will work best for Surf Fishing and Pier Fishing. If you intend to do some Inshore fishing you would want to “downsize” your tackle and outfit. Understand, Reds love inshore flats and creeks………

Hope this helps ya?

For further info on fishing the Gulf ask another Q! (wink)

UPDATE: I forgot to give you “brand names”. Penn, Shimano, Daiwa, and (for baitcasters & conventional reels) Abu Garcia makes the most reliable & durable Saltwater reels.

Reels to look at OTHER than what I suggested :

1. Daiwa, “Black Gold Series” BG15 or BG20

2. Shimano, “Sphereos” SP8000FB

3. Abu Garcia, C-3 baitcaster.

You may have customer service people try to sell you an Okuma, Pinnacle or Quantum reel. Many people have had luck with these, but for “longevity” and “the ability to get SPARE PARTS, Penn, Abu, Shimano, & Daiwa reign supreme.

( A good analogy?- Think of Penn, Shimano, Abu Garcia, and Daiwa as the “Ford, Honda, Chevy & Toyota” of the fishing world. The big question is- Do you want to purchase the “Hyundai or GM” of the fishing industry?)

Rods- Rods are tough. This really depends more on your budget than anything else. Most Florida guides and Offshore Charter Captains rely on Ugly Stik and have been for over 40 years. They are cheap and take a beating. Don’t get me wrong, there ARE better rods, but you will pay 2-3 times the price of an Ugly. And when it comes to Surf/Pier fishing rods you need a rod that is extremely durable……..

Rods- Seeker, Penn International, St. Croix, Shimano, Daiwa. Go to Bass Pro Shops and do a search in the Saltwater section for “Surf Rod”.

Fishing Stores

Wholesale fishing stores all you need

Before you go out fishing, you have to feel sure that you have all you’re fishing equipments ready because without the instruments, well then I don’t see how you’re going to get any fish unless you can ask them and make them to jump into your boat.

When one thinks of fishing tool, what usually come in one’s head is the fishing pole. But the fishing rod alone will not be able to get you any fish at all. I had a colleague once that tagged along on one of my fishing journeys and all he had was a pole. Well, the rod was prepared, I’ll give that to him. It had a real, a line and a hook. But you know fishes have brains too although it is small. They can feel a hook is a bad think to wrap their mouths on. What he was missing is lure! With a lure attached to your hook, you can be sure that sometime later a fish will chew on your line.

There are a lot of other fishing instruments and supplies that one will need. Like say, a bait toolbox, tackles, blade and even training videos to show you some tips and tricks in the fishing world. These are things in Requirement and can be found at your local sports shop. But sometimes, there are just some things that you just can’t find in these shops. That’s when you go to a wholesale fishing shop. It is a dedicated store for fishing and you earn a big discount on all tools when compared to the one’s available at sports stores.

So before you dare to go into the waters, always make sure you shop at a wholesale fishing shop as they will have additional thing that you just may look for useful for your trip.

How do aquarium fish stores keep their tanks nice & neat out of algae if they keep the lights on very long?

I am very curious to find out how they keep their tanks so neat, and free of green algae if their lights in their tanks all day

the tanks have strong filters and the workers clean the tank walls with a sponge or scrub pad often so that whatever is scrubbed off of the walls goes to the filters and some tanks have the algae bottom feeder fish to help the tank get alittle cleaner .. trust me i used to work in a pet store . hope that helped ..

Fishing Boat
Fishing Boat

Aluminum Fishing Boats. Way Better Than Fiberglass Boats

If you’re thinking of buying a fishing boat you have a number of choices. Basically you can buy an aluminum fishing boat, a timber boat or a figerglass fishing boat.

Personally I’m a huge fan of aluminum boats, and would never buy a fiberglass boat. Here’s why.

You’re buying a boat because you want to be fishing, not working on boats. If you want to be working on boats buy a timber fishing boat and I can guarantee you’ll spend many hours working on it. If you love that then fine, but for me I want to be fishing, not working on boats.

So timber is out. But what about fiberglass compared to aluminum. After all you see a lot of fiberglass boats out there.

What do you want in a fishing boat? Well you want it to be tough. Water resistant. Impact resistant. Low maintenance. Long lasting. Light. Easy to use.

Aluminum is all of these and more. It’s extremely tough. It is welded not riveted, so is totally waterproof. It is highly impact resistant. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be holed, but it’s pretty hard to do. Rather than get a hole aluminum tends to dent. This is great. If you hit something, as I recently did, you end up with a dent and head home feeling silly. If you hit something in a timber or a figerglass boat chances are high that you end up with a hole, and someone needs to come and get you because your boat is sinking.

Aluminum has a very high strength to weight ratio. So it’s light and easy to handle, both in the water and onto and off a trailer or even a roof of a car. It’s incredibly strong and will take a stack of punishment. It needs very little maintenance and will last forever.

A fiberglass boat on the other hand, has some drawbacks. It is heavier. It is less resistant to impact, and more easily holed. It takes a little more maintenance, although much less than a timber boat. And if treated badly it can absorb water. Be careful not to damage the gellcoat, or if you do repair it before you go out again.

And whereas an aluminum boat retains a very good resale value because they are so tough and durable, fiberglass boats can be more easily damaged and for this reason may not retail their value as well.

So for me it’s an aluminum fishing boat every time. I’ve had all 3, timber, fiberglass and aluminum,  and will be sticking to aluminum.

And the best thing about aluminum boats is that they are so tough and durable that it is far better to buy a used aluminum boat rather than a new one. A new boat is expensive, and like all things new will lose a lot of it’s value as soon as you buy it. So a used aluminum boat is much cheaper, and will retain it’s value to when you sell it you’ll probably get most or all of your money back. I bought a used boat 2 years ago and it’s worth as much or even more than when I bought it.

So if you’re pondering your choices between the different types of fishing boat, make it a used aluminum fishing boat. You won’t regret it.

What are some basic questions when purchasing a fishing boat?

I live on Lake Erie and would like to purchase a fishing boat approx. 12-14 feet. Gas or electric motor? What do I look for as far as rust?
What are the best bets for spending about a grand or so? Thank you

Look for a 14 footer with a deep V-hull. On Lake Erie you do not want a flat bottom jon boat because the weather and waves can get pretty rough.

For a boat that size you would probably be happy with a 15-25hp motor. You could get away with a 9.9, but your speed would suffer.

There should be no rust on the boat at all. Aluminum does not rust, and a rusty boat is sure to have problems in the very near future.

Make sure that the boat is seaworthy before purchasing. Look for loose rivets, holes, dings, dents, or other signs of potential abuse or regular wear and tear.

For 1 grand you are not going to get the titanic, or a luxurious boat of any kind, but you can get a decent, safe, and seaworthy small boat in that price range and should not settle for a bad boat.

Now that’s a fishing Boat

Fishing Bait
Fishing Bait

What is Fishing Bait?

There is such an assortment of bait that it is difficult to recommend any particular color, size, or type as the best. There are more than a thousand good baits on the market. All will catch fish at some time or another.

Fishing baits usually weigh from 1/4 to an ounce to three ounces.

Hence, anglers should know the basics of choosing fishing baits in order to save time and money.

i am fishing at hefner lakes indoor fishing pier trying to catch some catfish! whats the best bait to use? if u have any other tips please tell me.

wow i’ve never heard of an inside pier.must be exciting. anyway i imagine that the same type of bait that you would use for catfish whether inside or outside they are still the same.earthworms, stinkbait, cut up shad, sometimes a smaller fish cut up works too and my favorite that i use at a local river is beef liver, yes beef liver it bleeds better than chicken liver and also holds longer on the hook therefore your chances of a bigger catfish increases.good luck.

Why most divers in US frown upon spear fishing?

Many times when I shop for diving equipment and ask something about spear fishing I almost get kicked out of the store. I grew up in the Mediterranean and we spear fish as a sport, without using any SCUBA gear (even if you wanted I suppose all the bubble noises and heavy gear would alert the fish anyway).A large majority of people who love the sport know how to protect the environment (they usually are the ones who work the most to keep the fish alive and breeding). We only can remain in their environments for a very short period of time and fish have all the advantages against the human (unlike hunting when people use special scents, electronic equipment, decoys etc) So why one gets treated like a mass murderer when one even talks about spear fishing?

Maybe I’m throwing the baby out with the bath water, but when I read the story about poaching of the endangered black sea bass in California, I would rather ban spear fishing all together.

In this case, a docile 171# sea bass that was 15 years old has killed in a marine preserve.

Trout Fishing – Some Practical Tips For Amateur Fishers

An avid angler or a newbie hobbyist – whatever your category of fishing skills, we have just the right kind of practical know-how and angling tips that will help you capture more big Trout than ever before and all you need to do is read up on these guidelines! As any keen fisherman will know, the sport of trout fishing is one that requires a lot of practice and refining of existing skills of getting the right equipment, to learning how best to cast the line, the kind of lures to use and how to calculate the depths of fishing waters that are frequented by this species! We have all the necessary info lined up for you in our handy trout fishing guide segment – so just stop by and take a look – on your way out to being an expert fisherman!

You can expect to hone up your current trout fishing talents and improve upon angling knowledge besides shopping tips you can use to bring this past-time to a thing of glory for you – once you start reeling in the big ones! A fairly simply aim, trout fishing can be pursued without the need for expensive motor or boat or even depth calculators or pH level meters – all you need to have are good quality hip boots, a spin-casting set, box of hooks and Night crawlers!

Before setting out for your trout fishing adventure, please ensure you meet the mandatory age limit required for a valid fishing permit (especially if there are kids tagging along). Typically, this is granted at age 16 or above for most states. If the fishing hole is on private property enquire before using it; it pays to learn up local laws pertaining to fishing in your chosen area

Read up about the habits of trout fish (mainly 3 varieties exist – brown, brook and rainbow trout) so you are better equipped to know the waters each type is likely to inhabit and make faster, easier catches. For example, the last favors fast flowing streams and cool waterways while brown trout are a slower-paced lot, opting to live in streams filled with minnows and the brook variety inhabit colder waters, so head for the hills if you want to reel these in! A local map for the fishing trip is very necessary besides the right fishing gear before you set out to a new area.

Run a thorough check before setting out on your trout fishing adventure: beginning with the line (should run smoothly, tangle-free and neatly winded up), move on to cleaning your reel (to avoid snags) and hooking your nightcrawlers only at one end, so the rest moves naturally, especially if casting the line upstream!

Be alert and watch out for a tug at the fishing line so you can determine if its just the natural movement of the waters or an actual bite; and practice casting your line in spots that you have targeted as trout pools so you have as near to an exact aim as possible for consecutive castings. You need to do this with least disturbance to the waters as the fish will most likely scatter when obvious, noisy lines are cast. Smooth operator is the buzz word to trout fishing with an experienced hand to guide you in perfecting this easy fishing methods – keep trying, you are bound to succeed with practice.

Love the Outdoors. Where to go for Spring Break?

I am a college student, and I love to hike/walk/camp/trek/river raft/etc, but I am on a very limited budget.
Right now I’m in Eastern Washington, and it’s too cold to do any of those things for Spring Break, so I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to go (So Cal? AZ? etc.) that will be warm around mid-March.
I have a week, and I’ve heard about Zion and obviously the Grand Canyon would be great, but my bank account is quite low, so transportation to a warm place is an issue. Lost cause?
P.S. I have most of the gear I might need, it’s just airfare that’s a problem.

P.P.S. I love camping, or just a series of day hikes, I LOVE fishing (pref. for things that use trout equipment), I like rugged terrain, and I LOVE taking pictures.

Awfully cold in the Southwest this year. Fishing may be poor into May!

Home Gym Equipment

You can enjoy all the benefits of gym membership – a wide variety of equipment and facilities, good advice from staff and other members and the incentive to work out by making the gym a destination. But, you can also enjoy having the ease of access and the absence of a commute by purchasing home gym equipment.

But what should you buy?

If you’re just getting into, or back into a fitness routine, you should hold off purchasing anything. Using relatively new professional equipment, under the guidance of a knowledgeable instructor, will give you a good basis for comparison when shopping.

One of the first pieces of equipment anyone interested in weight training will want is, naturally, a set of weights.

Free weights can be purchased for very little money – a basic set is often under $50. You’ll want a mixture of small, 10 lb (4.5 kg) and 20 lb (9 kg) hand-held dumbbells and a bar with larger, exchangeable weights. Just about any bar is as good as another, but weights can be either metal or plastic. Some people like the old-fashioned clink of metal, but plastic weights (usually composite or sand-filled) are marginally safer.

At some point, you’ll want to ‘graduate’ to a weight machine. They offer the ability to focus on specific muscle groups – biceps, quadriceps, deltoids and others – in a much safer way than free weights can. Also, some muscle groups – calves or hamstrings, for example – are harder to work using free weights.

Once you’re ready for a weight machine, be prepared to spend some serious cash. Costs and configurations vary. Some are just simple resistance machines, essentially composite rubber stretching straps that allow for some adjustment to the tension. These run a few hundred dollars. Others are multi-station, adjustable weight stacks, often costing from $1,800 to $5,000 or more.

Stair steppers are becoming increasingly popular. A very simple model can run anywhere from $80-$150. It offers you the ability to get a good cardiovascular workout in a small space at home with low joint impact, while you build thighs and calves. Beware anything that looks like too good a deal, though. Reliability is key here; otherwise you’ve spent $100 for nothing when it breaks two months after purchase.

Some stair steppers run as high as $1,700 or more. At this level you should be getting a lot more than just the ability to simulate walking up stairs. Apart from reliability and handrails, which should be rock solid for 5 years or more, you should be able to adjust resistance level, speed, angle, and distance between the pedals. You should also get a heart rate monitor and other digital readouts (speed, distance climbed, calories burned, etc) as part of the package.

Treadmills, too, are becoming a more common part of the home gym. Since they run anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $2,000 or more, you should expect to get a lot for your money.

Again, they should be completely smooth working, stable and reliable for several years. A good treadmill should have a great, non-slip surface and it should be able to go faster and offer more resistance than you could ever use as you build up.

Like stair steppers, it should come with an impressive panel of controls and digital gauges. Any treadmill that costs over $1,000 should have, at minimum, adjustments for and measurements of speed and distance ‘walked’. It should include calories burned, with tailoring based on age, weight, etc. A heart rate monitor is a great plus.

Of course, if you plan to spend several thousand dollars to acquire home gym equipment, you should be prepared to dedicate yourself to a consistent, regular workout. But that’s something no manufacturer can guarantee.

Can someone suggest a surf-casting rod/reel set-up for around $200?

I’m looking to spend about $200 on a rod and reel for my father-in-law. He is a complete novice to surfcasting and saltwater fishing, so he doesn’t need a top of the line equipment just yet. With that said, I want to get him something that is mid-grade so he can “grow” into it.

I’ve been looking at the Daiwa Emcast Plus reel, model #ECP5500. And the Emcast Surf rods. But I’m having trouble deciding on a specific rod to compliment the reel/line weight.

Any suggestions regarding this set-up or any others?
Also, fishing will be done on the Connecticut coast. Target fish most likely blues and stripers.

when fishing for stripers and bluefish you want the lightest rod/reel possible. i would look for a penn 704z in the best condition possible. it will cost between 100-120. they are tough reels and will last forever.. for a rod i would look at the lamiglas surf king SK10MS. a good rod for casting lugs.

How threatened is fish to our food supply chain from disasters like BP, mercury, ocean dumping & over fishing?

From a recent article that I had extracted from Yahoo about Fish-less Oceans (see link below).
I had it placed in my blog as part of my responsibility. I had been into sports fishing and like all sports fishermen, we’re worried about dwindling fish stock.

I myself worked in the petrochemical sector for 28 years. While there are improvements made in reduction of chemical effluents into the water course but the amount of industries has quadrupled and there still remain irresponsible industries not complying to laws or rather documented laws (not thoroughly enforced). I do agree that up to today ocean dumping is still going on beyond our boundaries. Sea going vessels have been seen off loading their garbage into the seas.

Good question but lets us all do our part.
