A Fishing Guide – Fishing Made Easy

Fishing is considered a favorite past time among Americans. A majority of Americans have had the ultimate fishing experience. Fishing is the activity of catching species that live and breathe underwater.

Today more advanced fishing techniques were developed to make the activity more exciting and challenging. Before 2005, all fishermen had to do was hit a macro to catch a fish. Today there is a more developed fishing system; it involves fighting a fish to reel it in.

A simple fishing guide would make understanding fishing easier. There are five steps to follow for beginners. Start out by preparing your rod and reel. The reel has to have a line then press the button of your spin-cast reel. Make sure that enough line is pulled to thread it through all of the guides of the rod.

In the second step of the fishing guide it is important to attach a hook. One thing about hooks is that they come in different shapes and sizes. An acceptable size to use is #6 or #8. A clinch should be used to tie the hook to the line.

The third step of the fishing guide involves attaching a bobber by threading the line to the top and bottom hooks. The purpose is to attach the bobber so the fish hook hangs just above the structure.

Attaching the bait is the next step. Attach the bait to the hook using either worm rig method, worm rig for bait stealers method or doughball method.

The final step in the fishing process is to cast and retrieve. First cast the bait, then turn the reel crank forward until it clicks to prevent more line from coming out. You know you are catching a fish when the bobber moves or when you feel a tug on the line. Make sure the hook is in the fish’s mouth. If more detailed instructions are needed there are numerous fishing guides on the web or in books.

One guideline is very important before going fishing. Check the fishing regulations to see if the fish you catch according to size is legal to keep. If it is a fish that is not legal to keep, it must be released and handled as little as possible.

If this is a fish that can be kept a good way to keep it alive is to place it in a cooler until it is ready to be cleaned. So if your purpose is fish as hobby and use the catch and release method, fishing regulations do not need to be considered. Fishing is mostly done for recreational purposes, such as fishing tournaments or hobby but some actually catch fish that they plan to cook with. I would steer you toward Captain Sally. She fishes almost every day of the year and knows where the fish will be and when. As far as I know, she only throws artificial, so if you want to toss bait you’ll probably need to find a different guide.

What Baits Should You Have With Your Sea Fishing Tackle?

The bait is an essential part of sea fishing tackle. A fisherman should always have bait with him whenever he sets out to sea to fish.

The bait is a very important part of a fisherman’s sea fishing tackle. The specific reason for this is that it is the one that lures the fish to the hook and catches it. Without any bait in his sea fishing tackle, a fisherman cannot hope to return from his fishing trip with any catch at all.

In general, there are three types of bait that fishermen can keep in their sea fishing tackle. One type is live bait. As the name suggests, live bait are living creatures attached to the hook and used to lure the fish. Oftentimes, live baits are natural food of the fish the fisherman is aiming to catch. Freshwater fishermen tend to use earthworms, insects, grubs, minnows, crayfish and frogs as live bait. Saltwater fishermen, on the other hand, sometimes use small fish to attract the big catch available at sea.

The second type of bait is the prepared bait. Prepared baits used by fishermen include kernel corns, cheese or bread balls, salmon eggs, hotdogs, chicken entrails and the like. Saltwater fishermen often keep strips of fish belly in their sea fishing tackle to use as prepared bait.

The third type of bait is the artificial bait. These could be made of plastic, cloth, nylon or metal. Jigs, spinners, spoons, plastic worms and insects, and the like are all artificial baits. Most saltwater fishermen have a supply of jigs in their sea fishing tackle box.

What type of bait would work when you go saltwater fishing. It all depends on the fish you are planning to catch. A lot of fishermen swear by live bait, and some game fish do go for specific types of live bait. Fish tend to bite more eagerly at squirming live bait.

Artificial baits also work wonders on saltwater fishing trips. The key is to present them as naturally as possible to increase the chances of fish having a go at them. The weight of the lure often depends on the depth of the waters being fished, but the lure should not be too heavy, or else it would not look natural to the fish.

Many fishermen claim that fish have a keen sense of smell. Such fishermen always advise washing of hands before handling bait so that the human smell of one’s hands would not cling to the bait. Fish can sense human scent on bait and, wary creatures as they are, would not bite anything that smells human.

As much as possible, you should always have a few jigs in your sea fishing tackle box. However, what if you forgot to bring your bait when you set out for your fishing trip? In that case, you should learn to improvise. There was a story about a fisherman who forgot his bait once. To remedy the problem, he tore strips off his shirt and used it as bait. A big fish came biting, and once he caught that one, he used the pearly belly of his catch to create more bait.

Bait is an important part of your sea fishing tackle. You should always have some bait in your sea fishing tackle box before you go out on a fishing trip.

What is an acceptable tip for a deep sea fishing crew of three?

I belong to a yacht club in Florida and get a major discount when I go deep sea fishing. I don’t know what the regular rate is but I pay only $75.00 for 4 hours.

I know that the crew depends on tips as part of their wages and really appreciate their work but am not certain as to how much to tip them.

What is it in bass fishing that everybody are driven on to engage on such activity? People get fond of bass fishing that is why every trend that they hear about it really catches their interests and as much as possible get into it.

But there is more! Being a consistent bass angler is so much more than just getting in your boat, hitting the water, and casting your baits. That’s why bass tournaments are so competitive and exciting, because the more you learn about locating bass the quicker you can start catching them right? And hey, isn’t that half the battle?

Let’s start by looking at a lake map. There are two general types of lake maps that most anglers will use which are referred to as the; “Hot Spot” and “Topographical” maps. The differences between the two is that a “Topo” map shows more detail, and the “Hot Spots” map shows more fishing spots (well, at least they’re supposed to).

The secret (or key) in learning how to use a lake map would be to sector the map. What I mean by this is that I will take the map and study it for a moment (looking for areas where the fish would most likely be.) Next, I will (using a highlighter) divide the map in sections based on how much time I have to pre-fish for a tournament or how many days I have to just fish the body of water for fun.

The size of the sections will vary depending on contours, structure, and how many places I may want to check out during the course of the day based on what the map shows me. I am certainly not one to just cast bait into the water and work it for five minutes and leave; I will try an assortment of baits if I see signs of fish in any given area to try to establish a working pattern.

Here are some key elements that you can usually look for when it comes to locating bass on any given body of water:

1. Vegetation areas

2. Irregular contours

3. Shallow water close to deep water areas

4. Points and point drops

5. Various types of structure

but only swim with the life savers in the surf & be careful on the rocks at straddie because big waves can wash over you & you will drown so be very careful you stay back from the edge as its slippery as well

Spring Time Fly Fishing Gear Tune-Up – Clean Those Fly Lines

There are an almost endless array of fly lines available, some which cost extraordinary amounts. If you have invested money in a quality line, you will want to ensure that it lasts for as long as possible.

The single most important thing you can do is keep it clean. After each trip, take a little time and rinse your line with soap and water. Stay away from detergents and use a mild handsoap. Detergents tend to dry out the line and could result in your line developing cracks in the outer layer. This of course will hasten damage to the inner core of the line.

For some years, there has been a debate about the use of Armorall® and other similar products. Fly anglers who have used it discovered that it seemed to make their lines slicker. Others I have talked to have suggested that this is just a short term advantage and over time the chemicals in Armorall® will damage lines with regular use. I am not a chemist, and neither have I conducted any personal studies on the matter so I can’t advise you one way or the other. Bob Kloskowski of the International Fly Fishing Association interviewed Bruce Richards of Scientific Anglers and asked him specifically about using Armorall®. Here is what Richards had to say on the matter:

“Armorall and 333 contain some plasticizers and lubricants and will lubricate the lines surface, temporarily. They also contain a small amount of detergent that theoretically would reduce line life, but the affect would be minimal. These products can be used without noticeable negative affect, but the positive affect of lubrication is very short term as the product washes off quickly.” – 1997 Interview on NBC

Before you do head out for the first time this season, you might want to inspect your fly fishing lines for signs of cracking or even cuts. I remember some years ago, while casting on a windy day and getting into one of those cursed tangles where my leader caught my line and discovering that the leader had actually cut through the outer layer of the line. I was still able to fish the line that day, but replaced it before the next trip out.

Regardless of what sort of dressing you use on your line, the main thing is to keep it clean! Your fly line(s) is a very important part of your fly fishing gear.

First off I hope you meant reel and reels get mouted to rods not poles that is unless you do mean a pole and then you just tie the line in a good knot onto the end of your pole! Otherwise!
for a spinning reel: float the spool in a bucket of water while retreiving the line onto your reel it will turn itself over when it needs to
for a baitcaster reel: let your buddy hold a pencil through the spools hole with the line coming off the spool from the top (this is key) it comes off the top and goes on the reaal to the top just like it was packaged without twist one….

What’s the difference between fishing and angling?

The term “angling” is derived from an alternate name for a hook, i.e. an angle.

I posed a question about whether people preferred to be called fisherman (fisherperson), angler, or hooker. It seemed apparent people vary in their preference.

So, I guess a simple answer is that “fishing” is done by fisherman, “angling” is done by anglers, and “hookers”….well, you get the idea.

What Fly Fishing Equipment would be good for panfish and small bass.?

I have never fly fished before and am wanting to learn, I live in an area where there are mainly panfish, bass and catfish. I think I found some good equipment:

Nanticoke River Bass Fishing

The Nanticoke River is certainly one of the best Eastern Shore Rivers for bass fishing. On weekends you will see tournament fisherman from several states because the river fishes “big enough” to accommodate 50-150 boat events. I have found breaking the river down into three basic sections helps new fishermen here avoid being overwhelmed by the river’s size. These are main river / Seaford, Broad creek and finally Marshyhope Creek. Each of these areas has advantages and disadvantages for tournament fishermen and weekend fishermen alike.

Broad Creek

This creek is very popular but has too many “no wake” zones between Phillips Landing and Laurel making it tough to “run and gun” in tournaments. Broad Creek is more sheltered in heavy winds and usually has clearer water the closer to Laurel you go.
Some of the best fishing can be found by markers #4 – 5 and 7 as the creek makes wide bends all the way to Bethel. Just past Bethel Bridge is a small pond to the right that is easily accessed from the river. This is a real hotspot at times and a guaranteed fish spot during the spawn. Further up the creek you will see tons of lay down trees and finally a couple of bridges and a spillway in Laurel. This area is all good but slow going because of boat traffic and obstructions in the narrow channel.

Seaford and Above

The main river and Seaford area makes jumping from spot to spot very easy because the river is wider with very few restrictions. You will have barge traffic and many pleasure boaters and the dreaded jet skis to contend with but the fishing is great. My favorite spots are the boat docks; woodland ferry crossing, pad lines and all the great small feeder creeks. The Seaford area has heavy industry with all the piling clusters for barges, bulkheads, a Railroad Bridge and several good backwater areas. Between the railroad bridge and the Blades draw bridge there is a large marina with great fishing in the winter and during the spawn. Above the Blades drawbridge to the left is another backwater area leading to a dam with great fishing at times. Moving on up river past Route 13 Bridge the river splits into two branches. Both of these are fantastic in summer and fall but take time and caution to explore. Look closely and you will notice many new areas with grass. When fishing the Nanticoke remember the tide changes much earlier in Sharptown and Vienna than in Seaford so take full advantage of that “golden hour” when the bite is strong.

Marshyhope Creek

The Marshyhope fishes like a whole separate river and is easy to navigate when the pads are up. In winter or early season several bass boats have hit the mudflats thinking they were in the channel. This creek has always been best for me on falling tide with the last two hours being fantastic. Tournament fishermen have planted brush piles, weighted down wood pallets and even rock piles to enhance certain areas. These are all easy to find by watching your depth finder and slowly cruising pad line drops and creek mouths. There are several old wood boat wrecks on this creek that hold fish and some are visible on low tide so mark them with your GPS. Fish every creek mouth you can find on falling tides. Beaver huts are really bass magnets on this creek and any wood you notice out from the pad line on falling tide will hold bass consistently. Also fish the shallow bridge pilings, docks and all rip rap you see that helps break the current. Moving on up into the narrow wooded section look closely to your left and you will see a small pond called “Peggy’s Hole”. This is such a great spot during the spawn it is often put “off limits” in tournaments to avoid a boat race getting to it. The bass spawn much earlier than most people realize in this pond. Moving on towards Federalsburg you will notice a sandpit on your left that is also a spawn area that can be very good. In Federalsburg at the new ramp there is a small marina that never has boats tied up in it but is a good fishing spot. All the rip rap close by is good also. In fall always continue fishing all the way up past Federalsburg for the fish are there as the water cools. Now for the downside the Marshyhope has really strong current, gets muddy easily after rains or from boat traffic and is a fairly long ride from Phillip’s Landing or Seaford ramps.

What type of reel to use when fishing Kings in the Kenai river?

I am fishing the Kenai river this summer (end of June), just wondering what reel would be best suited to do this. I plan on wading in the river, no boat fishing (maybe a little bank fishing on some deep spots). I am getting an ugly stick 8.5′ rod, but for a reel I am still up in the air. I have a Shimano Torium 20, would that work for this type of fishing? Also, how does this reel cast, the fishing guy at Dicks Sporting Goods said it casts really well, but you never know with those guys. Thanks

The Carp Fishing Record – Will The Next One Count?

The emergence of Carp fishing as an expanding specialist sport during the seventies has grown ever more popular, one of the pioneers of carp fishing was the great Richard Walker who was a renowned Carp specialist in the forties and fifties. His record Carp Clarissa lived her days out in captivity after being caught at Redmire Pool, she weighed in at 44lbs and is possibly the most famous fish in the angling world.

But why was she so famous and why has Carp fishing continued to be so popular?

Well Clarissa was special, she not only broke the British record she smashed it, almost doubling the previous record of 26lb and this type of record breaking in fishing is unheard of in modern times. In addition to this apart from the Salmon caught in 1922 by Mrs Ballantyne it was the biggest freshwater fish ever caught.

She was possibly the most inspirational fish that a single generation has ever experienced and lived to the age of 34 before her death in Regents Park Zoo in 1971. It is probable that the death was premature and if left in the wild Clarissa may well have reached an age of 50 or 60 years. The tragedy here is that after her capture and transfer to the Zoo she never grew any bigger, contrast this to other fish in Redmire including the fish caught by Chris Yates at 51lb then a conclusion could be made that Clarissa never reached her true potential.

There is a train of thought that Clarissa could have eventually weighed 60lb had she been left in her natural home and imagine what that would have done for Carp fishing!

Add all this to this the fact that Richard Walker was a prolific writer as well as a prolific angler then the two combined factors would be the inspiration for countless young people to get into Carp Fishing. The next ingredient is the “air of superiority” and the atmosphere of secrecy that surrounds the carp world when you add this to the technical innovation and development of techniques and tackle then there is truly a magical draw for many people.

As time went by the growth of publicity for successful specialist carp anglers started to drive the potential to earn real money from the sport. Sponsorship, tackle design, bait evolution and syndicate waters started to provide anglers with the potential to earn serious money and many anglers either partnered or setup business around their success. Magazines and advertising then came on the scene and now there are many television programmes on SKY television and other subscription based media.

Tackle development has continued at an amazing rate and the industry continues to grow, its now more than 35 years since Clarissa died, there have been a string of new pretenders to her crown, bigger fish of course but none with the same aura and esteem.

Now as we move through 2007 we now see a new direction, the imported monsters that are coming into the country are being stocked at weights in excess of Clarissa when she broke the record!

These fast grown bloated fish are about to break and break again the Carp record but not one of these fish will ever match Clarissa no matter how big they are caught at. Of course the original strains of Carp were brought to the UK by the Romans, monks also farmed them and many stately homes were stocked with a new strain of Carp in between 1930 and 1940, it is known that some of these fish reached ages of 60+ which is amazing.

I liken this latest crop of imports to comparing a true diamond with Cubic Zirconia, you can have the biggest rock in the world on display on your finger but if its not a true diamond it is worthless!

Where will this end? Well the first issue will be whether to accept these new fish as true records (a dilemma already faced in the trout fishing world), secondly identifying the fish as a true contender or not, these are two very difficult questions which will now rock and divide the Carp fishing world over the next months and years.
