Is it difficult to make your own fishing equipment?

Im looking into making my own floats, Ive seen the ones at various retailers around me, and they seem shoddily made. Ive read some materials that explain how some lures where hand crafted by anglers even today. I was curious to know if this is a viable alternative to the products Ive seen here.

Also when making a float, is Balsa. Bass, or another softwood the best choice for materials. As for the paints, which type works the best to mark the equipment.
Okay, This may sound abit redundant, but what kind of paint, glows. is that a fluorescent paint, or am i mistaken. Also, do you need to clear coat them for waterproofing.

balsa or cork should both work well as will porcupine quills for light biters. just hold the quills on your line with a small piece of latex tubing.
as for paint, any good waterproof enamel should work. you may wish to primer coat them first.
if you have a lathe to turn them, you should have no other problems than getting the hole drilled straight. l guess you can do that on your lathe too.
there are quality floats by “thille” and others sold by cabela’s and bass pro shop as well as other outlets.

Bass fishing reports are supposed to help you determine where and if bass fishing is good. These reports are available for specific areas of the country, individual states, and sometimes even particular lakes. They are provided by guide services, game and fishing state departments, magazine and journal resources, and even by individuals posting on various bass fishing forums. What information should you look for or provide in good reports that are actually helpful to anglers seeking such assistance?

Number 1: Where is the bass? This may seem like a simple enough task, but the reports sometimes forget to include important pieces of information regarding the specific location of the bass. First, you need to find a report for your location – that could be a particular lake or river, a region, or even the entire state. This report should have recently updated information regarding the best bodies of water to fish at that time of the year. However, location should be more specific than that. Are the bass in the shallows near the shore, or have they crept out into the center of the lake where the water is deeper? Are they on their way upstream or suspended in the lakes? It is also important to detail specific areas of the lake that are hopping with bass, such as a large congregation of white bass near a particular dam or several fish on the north end of a lake nestled in a particular type of vegetation.

Number 2: What are they biting? Again, bass fishing reports that do their job well will talk about the types of baits and lures that are effective at the time the report is released. While bass are not picky eaters, they are more partial to certain types of food depending on the season because they are aware of what type of food is abundant during those times. How do i make floating plastic worms for fishing?

I love fishing plastic/rubber worms, especialy floating topwater ones. I recently moved and lost access to my favorite brand, so i thought i would make them myself. I know you do the melting, and the molds…….but i need to know what media is used, how you mix colors, and all the good stuff. If anyone is in this business and would like to throw me some pointers i would appreciate the help, thanks. Mainly what tools and what materials and where to find them.

Winning weights are routinely in the 18-to 25- pound range. To date, the largest bass documented from the lake weighed 17.10 pounds.

4. THE RODMAN RESERVOIR

The Rodman Reservoir, located east of the Gainesville and in the south of Palatka, covers an area of about 9,500 acres of prime largemouth bass ground. Since it was established in 1968, Rodman Reservoir has been known for the trophy largemouth bass. The state’s largest bass of 2000, 15 pounds and 17 pounds, came from the reservoir during March. Much of the largemouth bass fishery’s success is due to abundant habitat in the form of stumps and aquatic vegetation and periodic drawdowns.

5. LAKE TARPON

Lake Tarpon is a 2,500-acre lake near Tampa/St. Petersburg in Pinellas County. This lake has consistently produced high quality bass for years. Most fish range from 12 to 16 inches long however, quality and trophy fish are also present in good numbers. Biologists have observed anglers catching upwards of 20 fish with an occasional 10-pounder.

6. LAKE WEOHYAKAPKA

Lake Weohyakapka, commonly known as Lake Walk -in-Water, is a 7,532-acre lake, off S.R. 60 south of Orlando, east of Lake Wales. The lake has a nationalwide reputation as an outstanding location to catch largemouth bass. Anglers regularly catch upto 25 bass everyday with several ranging from 4 to 8 pounds. Weohyakapka also produces many trophy bass above 10 pounds annually. Last year, Walk-in-Water anglers entered 130 bass with a qualifying weight of eight pounds in the FWC’s Big Catch Program. A 15- to 24inch slot limit regulation with a three-bass daily bag limit is in place to help maintain good bass fishing. Anglers can keep three bass a day, either under or over the protected slot range, of which only one bass bigger than or same as 24 inches is permittedd.

7. LAKE ISTOKPOGA

Bass anglers who fish the Kissimmee Chain of lakes to the north and Lake Okeechobee to the south often overlook 28,000-acre Lake Istokpoga. Situated in Highlands County between U.S. 27 and U.S. 98 south of Sebring, Istokpoga is rated the 5th largest natural lake in the state of Florida. Anglers frequently catch bass up to eight pounds, with some between 10 and 13 pounds. An angler caught a 16-pound bass in March 1998.
Lake Istokpoga has a 15- to 24-inch lot limit for bass with a three fish daily bag limit, of which only one bass may be 24 inches or longer. All residents between 16 and 65 years of age and all non-residents are required to have a fishing license.

8. EVERGLADES WATER CONSERVATION AREAS 2 AND 3

Everglades Water Conservation Areas are marshlands bordered by canals. Areas 2 has 210 square miles of marsh, and Area 3 contains 730 square miles of marsh., and Area 3 contains 30 square miles of marsh. Originally designed for flood control and water supply, the area provides some of the best bass fishing in the country.
The best fishing usually occurs in the spring when dropping water levels concentrate fish the canals. April is the peak month with angler catch rates as high a 4.1 bass per hour in the L-67A Canal.

9. LAKE OKEECHOBEE

Lake Okeechobee is consistently one of Florida’s top producing bass lakes and is considered one of the best lakes in the country for bass fishing. Situated in south central Florida, the “Big O” covers 730 square miles and is easily accessible from Florida’s east and west coast. FWC biologists are expecting a tremendous year class for this lake this year.
The lake increased to 16 feet, early in 2003, due to above average rainfall in the upper lakes. Due to the drought in 2001, the lake has experienced positive changes in vegetation.
Lake Okeechobee has a 13- to 18-inch slot limit on bass, meaning all bass between 13 and 18 inches must be released unharmed.

10. CRESCENT LAKE
This 15,725 acre lake borders the east side of Crescent City on the Putnam/Flagler county line. Crescent Lake flows into the St. Johns River via Dunns Creek on its north end. Past electrofishing samples for largemouth bass revealed one of the highest catch-per-unit-efforts recorded for areas on the St. John’s River. Largemouth bass up to twenty inches long were well represented in the sample and good numbers of larger fish (8 lb +) were collected.

The type of bait may affect what type of things you receive when fishing or it may be a combination of both the type of bait and where you cast your line. I’m not exactly sure though….so there is a possibility that what you get is random.

I fish for mainly bass and an occasional medium sized walleye, or carp.

The Zebco Bite Alert Spinning Combo has two different sizes. One is HUMONGOUS, big enough for blue cats, flatheads, and what not. The smaller size, called the 30 model, will work good for bass, walleye, and carp as you say. I’ve also heard that the reels blinking device doesn’t always work, and I doubt you’d really need that blinker device with walleye or bass.

The Ugly Stik spinning combo is decent. It includes the Ugly Stik rod, which is a very durable rod, and it probably has a poor reel on it. I’d recommend the rod, but not particularly the reel. Although it would get the job done, you can find something better.

I use Berkley Big Game 12lb for carp, cats, and bass. It works very good for my purposes, it’s very abrasion resistant, and doesn’t have too much memory. I have it spooled on 3 of my reels as of now, and it works fine on all of them.

Most equipment is fine in a cool dry environment, but do not be tempted to lean your rod up against a wall, this could cause your rod to warp, instead, store them vertically or horizontally.

Whatever equipment you decide to purchase for the type of fishing you choose, we all know that fishing is fun.

A recent study showed that most fisherman fish for any type of fish and happy with whatever they catch, just as long as they catch something. In this case, equipment needed for fishing would perhaps prove to be less expensive and a lot more fun.

Im going to take up fishing and a relative new to the sport. I have fished as a child but going to take it up again going 2 or 3 times a week. I live near 3 rivers( pgh, pa) and numerous lakes in the region. Wondering which is better for some one new. thanx for the info

I would recomend a spinning reel, they are much easier to get the hang of you just flip the bail up, lightly hold the line under your thumb and when you cast lift your thumb up. Baitcast reels take a lot of practice, i’ve been using a couple off and on and for 2 years and am still having trouble making accurate casts. And if the line balls up it’s a big pain. definately not for begginers.
